The Australian government is strengthening enforcement of its under-16 social media ban following a landmark US case where tech giants Meta and YouTube were successfully sued for $4 million over platform addiction and mental health impacts. US lawyer Matthew Bergman, who won the case involving a 20-year-old Californian woman, has urged the Albanese government to enforce its ban, stating that moral persuasion of tech companies has failed. Australian law firms Slater & Gordon and Shine Lawyers are now exploring potential local claims.
