Gary emphasizes the distinction between the theology of glory and the theology of the cross. Trying to find peace and being right with ourselves isn't about how hard we work, how good we are, or keeping a positive attitude—it's all about trusting in what Jesus did for us. He's not about chasing after what the world says is success but points us towards the real deal—getting right through the good news of what Jesus offers, which is something we can't earn on our own. He uses the story of the thief hanging next to Jesus to show how simple it really is—ditching the do-it-yourself attitude and instead leaning into the kindness and help Jesus is handing out for a real change and peace inside.
