SMAC301 What Is Your Most Challenging Approach

SMAC301 What Is Your Most Challenging Approach? Welcome to episode 301. One of my favorite aviators because of his passion for flying is Dean Showalter. Dean is an aviation educator, podcaster, and all round nice guy. In a recent episode of his podcast, he discussed "The Most Challenging Approach" and asked the question "What's the most interesting or out-of-the-ordinary instrument approach you've seen recently". I thought it would be fun to have Dean on the show and discuss some of his listeners' responses and discuss the most challenging or interesting approaches we have experienced. Joining me in this episode are your co-hosts Tom Frick and Bill English. Preflight Checklist: Shout Out: Congratulations Matt Lehn, our program coordinator for passing his commercial checkride today. As many of you know, Carl is in training for the Airbus A320 and so his schedule has been difficult for podcasting so he wasn't able to join us on this show. BUT we were able to snag our friend and inventor of The AvPad iPad Kneeboard, Mike Ladd, to replace our lovable co-host that talks with his hands with a guest co-host that talks with a drink in his hands. Pre-Flight Sun N Fun 2013 is just around the corner. Both Carl and Len have signed up to volunteer for Sun N Fun Radio again this year so you can expect to see us running around campus conducting interviews on behalf of the radio station. We're also working to schedule in a LIVE podcast form the deck of Sun N Run Radio at some point during the event so stay tuned for more information. Rick recently found out by virtue of one of his YouTube Channel subscribers that he'd uploaded his 100th flying video. That video can be seen here: Cessna 172SP Pattern #3 OWD 2-5-12. Certainly a fun and nifty achievement so lets all join in to congratulate him! We look forward to many more videos to come. SMAC041 - Flying Resolutions, Tailwheel Adventures, and the 787

Podcast: Download | Mobile Friendly Glad to have you back for Episode #41! Carl has some exciting news to share about learning to fly the Airbus A320 at a new airline including some stories about jumping out of the airplane in his water ditching class. Also, we've had a temporary co-host restructuring - Victoria has been extremely busy as the US Team Leader in charge of organizing and assisting with Women Fly It Forward events throughout the United States that she needed more time to dedicate to those pursuits. While we surely do miss her spunky, ginger perspective on all things flying, please welcome our friend and listener Sean Moody as the interim co-host! Listen in to learn more about Sean, how he got started flying, his background, and even his new volunteer position with Stuck Mic AvCast! We're very excited to have him on board not only as an interim co-host but to help out behind in the scenes in an effort to assist us in delivering more quality content for your enjoyment. Don't forget to Follow Sean on Twitter. Pre-Flight A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the entire crew of Plane Crazy Down Under for approaching their 100th Episode! As fellow mates and podcasters we know what a crowning achievement this is and wish Grant, Steve, and the everyone at PCDU a prosperous future. In addition, co-host Len Costa will be visiting the Aussie guys in March for what is likely to be a memorable vacation in the land of kangaroos, Vegemite, and Coopers Vintage Ale. In the spirit of Oz accomplishments, we recommend you check out the Australian Airshow from February 26th through March 3rd, 2013 located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. SMAC040a - Freshman Year at Purdue University's Aviation Technology Program with Andrew Blanchard

Podcast: Download | Mobile Friendly If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to study aviation at the college or university level, then this special episode is for you. Co-host Rick Felty sat down for a one-on-one interview with Andrew Blanchard, private pilot and freshman at Purdue University’s College of Technology. Andrew is specifically enrolled in the Undergraduate Professional Flight Technology program within Purdue’s Aviation Technology school and at the time of this interview had just completed his first semester. In this episode you get some background on Andrew including his evaluation of different programs at other schools and why he chose Purdue. Then we discuss the program itself with first hand insight into how it works, what a typical day is like and how the program rolls out in the semesters ahead. But a big part of our discussion is the flying itself. From the fleet of Cirrus SR-20’s to a review of a few recent cross-country flights, Andrew gives us all an idea of what this kind of training is like at the University level. SMAC036a - Flying Cirrus in Hawaii with Maui Flight Academy

Recently co-host Len Costa had a chance to fly a Cirrus SR22 G3 with Maui Flight Academy in Maui, Hawaii. After which we departed Lanai for the island of Molokai to do a touch and go at Kalaupapa Airport (PHLU). During our time in Lanai, Len interviewed Maui Flight Academy's Chief Instructor, Laurence about his background in aviation and how he found himself in Hawaii teaching students in a Cirrus. In this interview you'll learn: Laurence's flight background Current flight experience and credentials Previous experience as a Part 135 operator providing air tours Experience with Cirrus The windiest airport in the nation Hawaii flying safety equipment Who is Doug Ritter and what does he do And so much more! SMAC034 - First Solos & How to Maximize Flight Training

Thanks for joining us again on this edition of the Stuck Mic AvCast! Before we get started today an apology and best wishes to us all from co-host Carl Valeri as he was not able to be with us on today's show. We did, however, find a stunt double to step in with our VERY FIRST guest co-host, one Mr Larry Overstreet. For those of you not familiar with Larry, Len interviewed him for Episode #31a – Learning to Glide with Larry Overstreet which we highly recommend you have a listen to not only to meet Larry but to also to learn more about soaring. Pre-Flight First of the show announcements is the Meet Us in Mohave event on October 19th through October 21st. This meetup is the 2012 CalPilot Annual Meeting and features next generation space pioneers, sailplane rides in high-performance gliders, static aircraft displays and a bunch more. For those of you looking to get your kids or younger family members into flying, there's an upcoming Young Eagles day at Robinsville, IL on October 20th at the Crawford County Airport. The Young Eagles program is put on by volunteer pilots for the purposes of taking children ages 8-17 for their first airplane ride, for FREE. There's also going to be hamburgers, brats, car show, and raffles to name a few. There's a new non-profit in town, the Institute for Women of Aviation Worldwide and our very own co-host Victoria Neuville is the Director so make sure to congratulate her! The purpose of iWOAW is bring businesses and organizations together to foster the diversity and growth in the air and space industries by outreach and educational programs aimed towards men and women working together in harmony. Lastly, there's our "What's Great About Greenland?" segment. Today's fun fact about Greenland, besides it's hard to pronounce names, are it's costal waterways. With over 1,300 km of waterway from north to south you can enjoy a journey from town to town much like that of a cruise ship. Episode #33 - Ways to Stay Flying vs Quitting Aviation

In this episode of the Stuck Mic AvCast we ended up spending the bulk of our show on a discussion about ways that pilots can stay flying and ways to stay involved in aviation versus quitting altogether. Many factors can play into such a decision to quitting aviation such as time constraints and increasing costs and in this show we share our ideas on how to remain involved including what we hope to be some motivational means to helping you keep up with our favorite lofty hobby. Pre-Flight The EAA Grassroots Pilot Tour is headed your way! Learn more about the aviation issues of our time including what you can do to help grow participation in aviation and inspire the next generation of aviators. Click the above link for the upcoming scheduled tour locations. AOPA Aviation Summit comes to Palm Springs, CA October 11th to 13th, 2012. There's educational classes, hands-on learning, over 400 vendors, the parade of planes, not to mention other interactive experiences and products demonstrations. Never been? Co-host Rick Felty recommends attending at least once! The merger between ThePilotReport and StuckMicAvCast is nearly complete! All posts, photos, and videos over at ThePilotReport.com can now be accessed here directly on StuckMicAvCast.com. This also means our FREE mobile app available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android has been updated to include the new PilotReport content like videos, photos, direct access to our blog, our product store for nifty Stuck Mic AvCast Swag, and new ways to contact us both via snail mail and telephone. The obnoxious ads inside the app have also been removed for your viewing pleasure. During the merger process, founder Len Costa noticed we didn't have any listeners tuning in from Greenland! The shame. So starting in Episode 33 and continuing every episode going forward until we see our northern cousins tuning in we'll be featuring a new segment called, "What's Great About Greenland?" This weeks great Greenland fact includes the northern lights! A natural light display, also known as Aurora Borealis, is caused by the collision of energized particles in the sky creating a visible and colorful display of dancing green to purple waves in the night sky. Something that should never be missed if given the chance to experience! Thanks, Greenland :-) Oh, and we like the pronunciation of your capital, Nuuk, which sounds like nuke. Apparently that's what co-host Victoria Neuville does to her TV dinners... Guess her new husband doesn't cook? LOL Moving on! Episode #32a - Flying Tailwheel with Paul Santropietro

Recently co-host Rick Felty had a chance to fly with and simultaneously interview Paul Santopietro, a 13,000 hour pilot, ATP, CFII, MEI, Commercial Glider, Commercial Single Engine Sea and 8,000 hour tailwheel pilot. The interview was conducted during cruise flight at about 2000 feet above southeastern Massachusetts while flying in a Cessna L-19 Bird Dog. With an old-school stick and rudder approach to flying and his affable manner, Paul discusses the unique challenges of tailwheel flying, the history of the Bird Dog itself, with a few other fun stories thrown in. For part of the year, Paul is based on the east coast of Florida, but spends his summers teaching tailwheel flying at 1B2, Katama’s grass field on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Paul can be reached mainly via email at [email protected] or visit his web site at LearnTailwheel.com (currently being renovated). Episode #31 - Bye Bye ThePilotReport, Behind the Scenes & What Really Happened at Oshkosh 2012

It's that time of the month again where we bring you an episode of one of aviations finest, up and coming podcasts out there! Today we share the real story of Oshkosh 2012 from those who lived it in the trenches, weathered the storm, and even worked the event as vendors and photographers. But let's look at a few announcements first... Pre-Flight For those of you who haven't heard yet, our co-host Carl Valeri started an Aviation Careers Podcast to help folks interested in the different career options within the aerospace and aviation industry. There's a lot more to aviation then just being a pilot, from flight attendants, to ramp personnel, to selling aviation insurance, working for an aircraft manufacturer, and so much more. His most recent show, How To Prepare For Captain Upgrade At The Airlines, Flying the Embraer 145, A Midlife Career Change, was an interview with Len Costa of Stuck Mic AvCast fame about his recent experience in the airline captain upgrade class on the Embraer 145 jet. Len takes you through his captain training from start to finish and delivers a behind the scenes play-by-play journey of the entire process. Secondly, we have a MAJOR announcement from Len Costa, creator of ThePilotReport.com and the StuckMicAvCast.com: Friends, The time has come to make a decision on the future of both websites. When I first got started with aviation blogging at ThePilotReport.com, it was a period of my life where I had a ton of free time to dedicate towards creating videos for product reviews, interviewing aviation business owners, and eventually starting the podcast. As time progressed and my life became more involved at work, posts and videos at ThePilotReport.com became more and more distant. That also translated into not having the proper time to dedicate to StuckMicAvCast.com, the podcast, and our listeners as you all so justly deserve. Which leaves me where we are today; a crossroads for our collective future. Does ThePilotReport.com die and go away or does the Stuck Mic AvCast head west into the sunset? It's just counterproductive to grow two different aviation brands in their own respective directions. So here's what's happening... WE'RE MERGING!!! That's right. All your favorite content at ThePilotReport.com will soon be integrated here on StuckMicAvCast.com over the coming months. This not only allows me to focus on one passion, growing it to it's fullest potential, but more importantly it allows US to focus on YOU by creating and delivering the specialized content you've requested here in one central location. What's that mean for you our listeners? By merging ThePilotReport.com into Stuck Mic AvCast you'll enjoy a deeper, all encompassing aviation experience as the Stuck Mic AvCast becomes your favorite aviation destination for all things Learning to Fly, Living to Fly, and Loving to Fly. That means more aviation product reviews, more interviews, more flying videos, aviation training products, and a whole lot more in the works! We're confident you'll love the changes ahead and all of the Stuck Mic co-hosts are absolutely excited to grow into our "future of awesome" together with you. Thank you all so very much for your support, for your listenership, and most of all for your friendship. Here's to many more years together as your beloved Stuck Mic AvCast crew! Episode #29 - Porpoising, Flying in Canada, & OpenAirplane

Welcome home for another episode of the Stuck Mic AvCast! Rick shares a story about a flight where he experienced some porpoising which led to a group discussion on tips and techniques to help reduce porpoising and ideas for recovery. We also speak about flying into Canada from the United States which stemmed from a flight Carl did where a crew member got detained in customs. This led Carl into some research about Canadian flying where he discovered some helpful information to minimize your time with Customs in addition to some real world experience shared by Len from a flight he did to London, Ontario in a Piper Seminole. And then we wrap up the show with the co-hosts Picks of the Week and share our thoughts about the ever-so-cool OpenAirplane. Pre-Flight The Albert Whitted Airport Preservation Society is hosting a cookout and lunch for fundraising to help keep the airport open both at 11:30AM on August 4th, 2012 and again on September 1, 2012. Located in St. Petersburg, FL, the Albert Whitted Airport holds a historical value in the American aviation books when on January 1, 1914, the FIRST regularly schedule airline flight departed. Episode #28 - Aircraft Valuations, Running the Captain's Gauntlet, & The FAA

Thanks for tuning in to another episode of the Stuck Mic AvCast! Today's show contains information about aircraft valuations, the first part of Len's story about airline Captain training, and some notes about the FAA. Rick wasn't able to join us on this episode due to some unforeseen circumstances that were out of our control although he sends his best wishes! NOTE: there were a few struggles with audio quality during recording due to poor Skype reception. That and Len was away from his studio equipment so his audio isn't as smooth as usual. Our apologies, sometimes these things happen, and we believe we've found a good backup to safeguard against similar issues in the future. But enough about that, let's get to the nitty gritty, y'all! If you recall from a previous show Ms. Victoria will be at Oshkosh working the Aviation Insurance Resources booth if you'd like to stop by and say hello. Carl and Len are working to free their airline schedules to stop in for a couple of days and visit with everyone so we'll continue to keep you posted on that.
