Should they attempt to position themselves as the party of God, or is there a better path forward? In this episode, Sarah Levin, founder of Secular Strategies and a member of the Democratic National Committee’s Interfaith Council, discusses how secular Democrats are collaborating with people of faith to create a truly inclusive big tent. Sarah explores why imitating GOP-style religious politics is a losing strategy and explains how language around morality and shared values can bridge divides between believers and nonbelievers. We dive into the unifying potential of issues like voting rights, democracy, and protecting immigrants, and why the way forward is not about putting God back into the Democratic Party but building a vision of justice and inclusion for all Americans. Subscribe for $5.99 a month to get bonus content most Mondays, bonus episodes every month, ad-free listening, access to the entire 750-episode archive, Discord access, and more: https://axismundi.supercast.com/ Can there be a “sex positive” version of the high-control religious sex and gender ideologies we’ve explored in recent episodes? What about individuals, most notably women, who find tremendous sexual fulfilment within this framework and the institution of marriage it affirms? Do they stand as evidence that critiques of this system are misplaced? And what about the dozens of Christian sex manuals that affirm the aim of both male and female sexual fulfilment and pleasure? Are all of these evidence that there can be a “sex positive purity culture?” Check out this episode to hear Dan’s response to this points, and to hear why he believes a truly sex positive version of this sex and gender ideology is a myth. Who “owns” Christmas? When Christians tell non-Christians that they need to “remember the reason for the season,” or accuse them of engaging in a “war on Christmas,” do they have a right to do so? Is Christmas “theirs” just because it originated as a Christian religious holiday? In this episode, Dan argues that American Christians made Christmas a mainstream part of American culture, a dimension of general Americana, and that as a result they no longer have a claim on the holiday or the right to dictate to others how it should be observed (or not). In this episode, Dan takes on the “design argument” that the purpose of human sex is procreation. Here’s how the argument goes: If God created human beings, and therefore human sexuality, this means that the purpose of sex is procreation, because this is God’s intended purpose. But does the argument work? Dan argues that even if we presuppose human beings and their sexuality as a direct creation of God, the idea that the purpose of sex is procreation is STILL not compelling. Human sexuality is so ineffective at bringing about procreation that it is implausible to suggest that this is its “design.” Check out this week’s episode to hear more! Rather, his argument is that Trump's Big Lie and the myth that the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago was unconstitutional and illegal are resonant with the Stab-in-the-Back myths Hitler used in Germany to convince his followers that their country had been stolen from them and only he could return it to glory. The episode also explores Elon Musk's involvement with Donald Trump's inner circle, including attempts to influence cabinet picks, and the vision of tech moguls wanting to create sovereign 'freedom cities' on federal land. Brad gives a critical view of Musk's transformation from admired innovator to perceived supervillain and how these powerful figures aim to transcend historical limitations. He also highlights the long-term strategies of radicalized Christian nationalists attempting to build a theocratic society in Jackson County, Tennessee, drawing parallels between their goals and those of the tech oligarchs. But if we take a closer look, we find that it’s not clear what exactly “sexual immorality” even is. And if we think about it, those outside of high-control religious contexts don’t link issues of sexuality and gender together with “immorality” or “morality” is the ways that are typical of high-control religion. Why is that? What’s really going on when adherents of high-control Christianity appeal to “sexual immorality”? In a new article, Activating Animus: The Uniquely Social Roots of Trump Support, she and her co-authors show that “Trump’s support is thus uniquely tied to animus toward minority groups.” She provides key takeaways fro this study: “First, the people who really like Trump in 2018 are the same ones who really disliked Blacks, Muslims, LGBT+, and Hispanics in 2011. It’s NOT THE SAME for the GOP in general, or even for Ryan or McConnell. Trump is drawing on this particular group of people to a unique degree. The new MAGA/anti-MAGA conflict is not an entirely partisan one. It’s about white Christian supremacy versus a fully multi-racial democracy. And it’s not happening for anyone on the Democratic side. Hating Christians and White people doesn’t predict favorability toward any Democratic figures or the Democratic Party. So it isn’t “anti-White racism” (whatever that means) motivating the left. It’s not “both sides.” This means that there is a faction in American politics that has moved from party to party, can be recruited from either party, and responds especially well to hatred of marginalized groups. They’re not just Republicans or Democrats, they’re a third faction that targets parties.
