It's In the Code Ep. 65: Publicly Private
“It’s In the Code.” But in what sense is a code something public and shared? And in what sense is a code something secret, communicated only the select few “in the know?” Dan explores these issues in this episode, arguing that secret codes that operate below the surface are dependent on public codes we all share and can understand. He also suggests that this interplay is vital in our current context defined by endless culture war. The Reawaken America Tour: Anti-Semitic, Anti-Democratic, and Openly Violent
Brad talks to Rev. Nathan Empsall, the Executive Director of Faithful America. They discuss the Reawaken America Tour, which just relaunched in Las Vegas a week ago. As Rev. Nathan says, the tour platforms speakers who are anti-Semitic, anti-democratic, and openly violent. It is a dangerous movement that is, unfortunately, tying together explicit Christian practice - like baptism on stage - with insidious American nationalism. The result? Maybe the most potent magnet for Christian nationalism alive today. Weekly Roundup: Back to (Destroy) School
How does a racially fueled tragedy tie into the policies of a state governor? And what sinister patterns can we uncover when we trace the origins of the 'lone gunman' phenomenon? Brad and Dan investigate the chilling Jacksonville shootings, the disturbing racial motivations behind the crime, and the ways these events echo the policies of Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis. . We then shift our focus to the Christian homeschooling movement, helmed by Michael Farris, and its possible impact on public education. Discover how a group of devout millionaires are bent on uprooting the education system, alleging that schools teaching about gender identity and race are unconstitutional. Finally, we wade into the murky intersection of Christian and Hindu nationalism, and the ways Vivek Ramaswamy is transposing the latter onto the former. It's In the Code Ep. 64: “You Have to Get ‘Em Lost to Get ‘Em Saved”
“You Have to Get ‘Em Lost to Get ‘Em Saved” What can it possibly mean when some Christians say that you “have to get people lost before you can get them saved?” What does it mean to be “lost”? What does it mean to be “saved”? And what are some of the effects of this language? Is it just a way of summarizing basic Christian teachings, or does it have further-reaching, possibly significant, negative effects? Dan tackles these issues in this week’s episode. The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy with Robert P. Jones
Brad speaks with Dr. Robert P. Jones, President of PRRI and author of the new book The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy: And the Path to a Shared American Future. Beginning with contemporary efforts to reckon with the legacy of white supremacy in America, Jones returns to the fateful year when a little-known church doctrine emerged that shaped the way five centuries of European Christians would understand the “discovered” world and the people who populated it. Along the way, he shows us the connections between Emmett Till and the Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto in the Mississippi Delta, between the lynching of three Black circus workers in Duluth and the mass execution of thirty-eight Dakota men in Mankato, and between the murder of 300 African Americans during the burning of Black Wall Street in Tulsa and the Trail of Tears. It's In the Code Ep. 63: Do They Know It's Code?
We say someone is “speaking in code,” or talk about “codes,” or discuss things that are “in the code?” But what do we mean by “code?” And when someone uses coded language, do they know they’re doing that? When we talk about people or communities using codes to manipulate or control others, are they doing it on purpose? And do we all use codes, or is it always something “they” (whoever they are) do? Dan tackles those questions in this week’s episode. Taxpayer Money is Going to Fund Religious Schools
Brad speaks to Rachel Laser, President and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. They discuss AU's lawsuit with the ACLU and FFRF in the case of the state of Oklahoma agreeing to send taxpayer funds to a Catholic school. This is, in essence, an attempt to make Christian schools into public schools. From AU: And public schools must be secular and open to all students. They are not allowed to discriminate against students or indoctrinate children into one religion. But that is exactly what Oklahoma’s newly approved religious public charter school, St. Isidore of Seville, intends to do. Approved by the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board in June 2023, St. Isidore would be a public school—entirely funded by the taxpayers of Oklahoma—even though St. Isidore makes clear in its charter school application that it intends to run the school “as a Catholic school” and a “place of evangelization.” That’s why Americans United along with the ACLU, Freedom from Religion Foundation and Education Law Center is suing. Weekly Roundup: Rico Suave
On a solo Friday, Dan begins by discussing the sprawling indictment of Trump and his co-conspirators in Fulton County, Georgia. This indictment includes lawyers, pastors, and others who allegedly helped Trump attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Dan then turns his attention to the ruling on the abortion pills out of the 5th Circuit. It's In the Code Ep. 62: Non-Denominational
What does it mean when a church is “non-denominational”? What is the relation between non-denominational churches and established denominations? Weekly Roundup: Power Bottoms
Brad and Dan begin by discussing the latest news from SCOTUS - Clarence Thomas's many vacations with right-wing billionaires - by framing the entire GOP's approach to politics as a will to power. Dan draws on a piece by a retired conservative judge in order to demonstrate that the American right has become the party of power and negativity. Brad then goes through a litany of issues related to sex and gender: from reactions to the World Cup loss of the US women's team to Matt Walsh's comments on pansexuals to Praeger U being taught in Florida schools. It's In the Code Ep. 61: Baby Christians
Within a certain part of the American Christian subculture, it’s common to speak of people who are “baby Christians.” But what does that mean? Is it just silly? Is it just an effect of biblical understandings of the Christian faith? Or does it have more significant religious, social, and political consequences? No Chinese Allowed: The New Alien Land Laws w/ Russell Jeung
Capitalizing on current, widespread anti-China sentiment in the United States, lawmakers in nearly 30 states have proposed or have passed legislation banning foreign nationals, governments and companies from purchasing land, particularly farmland or property near military bases. Although they ostensibly aim to protect America’s national security, they have other dangerous consequences – stoking xenophobic biases and targeting of Asian Americans for further racial profiling and exclusion. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2023/07/04/land-ownership-bans-china-racist-us-history-repeats/70352009007/ Subscribe for $5.99 a month to get bonus episodes, ad-free listening, access to the entire 500-episode archive, Discord access, and more: https://axismundi.supercast.com/ To Donate: venmo - @straightwhitejc Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi Linktree: https://linktr.ee/StraightWhiteJC Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 Learn more about your ad choices. It's In the Code Ep. 60: The Distance Between the Head and the Heart
“Lots of people miss salvation by 18 inches—the distance between the head and the heart.” This (and statements like it) is a phrase that has long circulated within a particular kind of Christian subculture. But what does it mean? What does it mean to “believe” in God with your heart, instead of your head? And how does this language work as a mechanism of social control, beyond or beneath its surface meaning? Dan tackles these topics in this week’s episode. Conspirituality: Conspiracy + New Age Spirituality
Brad is joined by Julian Walker and Matthew Remski, two of the hosts of the Conspirituality podcast and co-authors of the new book, Conspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Public Health Threat. Emma Hulbert provided research assistance for this episode. https://www.powells.com/book/conspirituality-9781541702981/1-2 Each of the three authors has witnessed firsthand the use of fear-based political agendas to manipulate the human desire for spiritual fulfillment. Ron DeSantis' claim that enslaved people would have been able to develop trade skills and other "personal benefits." In the second segment Brad outlines the controversy surrounding Jason Aldean's song "Try That in A Small Town," explaining why it's code and what the history of lynching and other violence tells us about it. We Are in a Lawsuit, in Texas, Over Free Speech!
Brad is scheduled to speak on August 26th at an interfaith event held by the Metropolex Atheists. However, the city of Fort Worth refuses to allow the group to advertise. Brad speaks with Nick Fish, president of the American Atheists, on how the City is creating a false pretext to prevent a group of non-religious Americans from advertising their event in public. "Since at least 1998, Fort Worth has permitted nonprofit organizations to rent out space on downtown lamp posts to advertise events. These nonprofits include Kenneth Copeland Ministries and Texas Christian University. By its policy, the City has created a limited public forum under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and may not discriminate based on viewpoint, which includes atheism. The Supreme Court recently confirmed these protections in its 2022 decision Shurtleff v. Boston. Nonetheless, the City of Fort Worth has denied Metroplex Atheists the right to advertise an event on combating Christian nationalism and protecting secular public schools, planned for August 26 at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. Assistant City Manager William Johnson, who denied the banner display, claimed that the education event was not of “sufficient magnitude.” Yet nowhere does the City’s Banner Display Policy mention such a requirement." https://www.atheists.org/2023/07/atheist-group-lawsuit-fort-worth/ Subscribe for $5.99 a month to get bonus episodes, ad-free listening, access to the entire 500-episode archive, Discord access, and more: https://axismundi.supercast.com/ To Donate: venmo - @straightwhitejc Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi Linktree: https://linktr.ee/StraightWhiteJC Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 Learn more about your ad choices. Brad analyzes how the playbook he and his team are using comes right from Orban's takeover of Hungary's government from within. In the second segment Dan analyzes the reports that Ron DeSantis is trying to create his own personal militia in Florida that would answer only to him and be deployed in matters of border security, violent crime, and other issues. Brad likens this to Mussolini's Black Shirts. In the final segment both hosts discuss the horrific story that border security in Texas were ordered to push nursing children into the Rio Grande River. It's In the Code Ep. 58: "It's a Mental Illness"
Why do those on the religious and cultural right often describe transgender or gender-nonconforming identity as a mental illness? What is the relationship of “gender dysphoria” and trans or gender-nonconforming identity? Why would some who target trans and gender-nonconforming people claim that they are doing it because they care for them? Disobedient Women is not just a look at the women who have used the internet to bring down the religious power structures that were meant to keep them quiet, but also a picture of the large-scale changes that are happening within evangelical culture regarding women’s roles, ultimately underscoring the ways technology has created a place for women to challenge traditional institutions from within. It's In the Code Ep. 57: Religious Freedom Part II
The language of “religious freedom” is often used as a code for the preservation of traditional White Christian privilege in the US. But it is also used as a code for efforts to use religious ideology to influence the secular government, so that the beliefs of a minority of White conservative Christians in the US is forced onto the population as a whole. Weekly Roundup: Klanned Karenhood (Moms for Liberty)
Brad begins with a long discussion of the Moms for Liberty conference in Philadephia. He centers his comments on the long history of "housewife populism" that goes back to the 1950s. Drawing on work from Gill Frank and Melissa Deckman, Brad argues that Moms for Liberty stands in a long lineage of grassroots movements led by women using the mantle of motherhood to advance an anti-LGBTQ and often White supremacist agenda. Piece by Gillian Frank: https://wearethemeteor.com/moms-for-liberty-history-white-supremacy/ He also does a close reading of Dennis Prager's comments from the conference - showing how the drive for "order" is the sacred value in Christian nationalist and right-wing spaces. In the final segment he considers the category of Whiteness in relationship to the "color-blind" approach to race and racism that we are hearing about in the wake of the SCOTUS decision on college admission. 303 Creative and the Phantom Gay Wedding
Brad analyzes the recent SCOTUS decision ruling that a website designer has the right to refuse to create websites for gay couples. It's In the Code Ep. 56: Religious Freedom Part 1
The language of “religious freedom,” “religious freedom restoration” laws, and so forth makes many of us uncomfortable. What does this language mean? Who deploys it? For what reasons? Where did it come from? In this first of a two-part episode, Dan explores these issues, looking at the emergence of the idea of religious freedom and how those who deploy it on today’s political and religious right have departed from its historical meaning. Inside the Evangelical Movement That Failed a Generation
Jon Ward's life is divided in half: two decades inside the evangelical Christian bubble and two decades outside of it. In Testimony, Ward tells the engaging story of his upbringing in, and eventual break from, an influential evangelical church in the 1980s and 1990s. Ward sheds light on the evangelical movement's troubling political and cultural dimensions, tracing the ways in which the Jesus People movement was seduced by materialism and other factors to become politically captive rather than prophetic. Weekly Roundup: Abortion is a Religious Right
Brad and Dan dedicate this episode to discussing the state of reproductive rights, activism, and law one year since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Brad begins by going through the numbers on support for abortion in the country, policy and campaign surprises since Roe's fall, and the ways Democrats and Republicans have responded. In the second segment Dan outlines the American religious groups who are suing to have abortion bans overturned in their states on the basis of religious freedom. The argument: abortion is a religious right that is part of their religious practice. This leads to a broader discussion of how law and religion work in the USA and why using religion as a means of policy change is so effective. It's In the Code Ep. 55: Dedicated Babies
In this week’s episode, Dan explores and explains the practice of infant “dedications,” in contrast with the more familiar practice of infant baptism. Why do some churches reject infant baptism, but practice infant “dedication” instead? And what does this tell us about cultural “duplication” and its role within American evangelical subculture? Weekly Roundup: Trump Arraignment, SBC Misogyny, and Resources to be a Trans Ally
Brad and Dan begin by discussing the reactions to Trump's arraignment in Miami - from congresspeople calling for war, to Kari Lake talking about 75 million Americans with guns, to megachurch pastors exhorting their congregations to emulate religious terrorists. Brad points out that the anger over Trump's arraignment coincides with the rise of anti-trans rhetoric - from Trump himself to the KKK. In the second segment, Dan provides a long list of ways to learn about trans issues and how to become a trans ally. A list of the resources can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14jp1y8Kj0bxeeY2NHWY3yRhORKx6M_3-/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=115399197961662580538&rtpof=true&sd=true In the third segment the hosts discuss the vote in the SBC to exclude any congregations with women serving in the role of pastor. Dan links this to the sinister ways that purity is used as a virtue. Brad provides a history of women in pastoral roles in the SBC and shows why this is not a new issue. It's In the Code Ep. 54: Suffering and Persecution
Why do conservative American Christians and Christian nationalists use the rhetoric of being “attacked” and “persecuted”? Why do they perceive themselves to be “suffering” in the contemporary United States, when they experience pronounced social, cultural, and legal privilege? And how do these ideas link up with the broader valorization of “suffering” within some forms of Christian identity? Dan takes on these issues in this week’s episode. The Data on Deconstruction
Faith deconstruction - the intentional examination of one's religious faith and beliefs, leading to a profound change in, or even loss of, that faith - has received increasing attention in the past few years. But, who are the people who deconstruct their faith, what causes them to do so and where does the journey take them? Olivia Jackson's new book (Un)Certain is a collective memoir built on the stories and reflections of over 150 interviewees and nearly 400 survey respondents from all over the world, including the author's own story. These are ordinary people who reached the end of their (predominantly) evangelical road and had the courage to keep walking. It is woven around themes and shared experiences which came up time and again, and reveals a picture of deeply committed believers (including clergy) who reached a breaking point with the certainties and doctrines they spent years or even decades professing. Weekly Roundup: Target Temper Tantrums & Dominionists Take Over Election Canvassing
Brad is joined by guest co-host Annika Brockschmidt. They begin by dissecting the Target boycott staged by the American Right. Brad analyzes it by explaining how "culture wars" are conflicts over the identity of a nation - and how the celebration of Pride has led to harassment and vandalism in Target stores as a result. He also breaks down why Pride themed products have garnered these reactions, but gun violence has not. In the second segment Annika zooms in on Lance Wallnau's attempts to take over election canvassing in key counties - places he claims there are demonic strongholds and that need to be freed from Satan. In the final segment Brad goes through the new alien land laws in Florida, Alabama, and maybe Texas, explaining the long history of such laws and how they lead to racism and marginalization of Asian And Asian American people. Trans Minister Alex McNeill on Trans Survival and Trans Flourishing
Dan is on vacation this week, so we are happy to present Brad's interview with Rev. Alex McNeill, which is part of the special series ONE NATION ALL BELIEFS. Rev. McNeill is a white, queer, transgender man, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Rev. McNeill served as the executive director of More Light Presbyterians for over eight years. There, he empowered faith leaders to welcome LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC neighbors into worship communities and to advocate for justice in their broader secular communities. Alex has worked to elect LGBTQIA+ leaders, advocated for reproductive justice, and won state, national, and denominational legislation affirming and protecting the rights and dignities of queer and trans people. Before earning a Master’s of Divinity from Harvard University, Alex got his start in LGBTQIA+ and reproductive rights activism as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and Trans Antagonism
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence make up an unlikely order of nuns. Self-described as “twenty-first century queer nuns,” the Sisters began in 1979 when three bored gay men donned retired Roman Catholic nuns’ habits and went for a stroll through San Francisco’s gay Castro district. The stunned and delighted responses they received prompted these already-seasoned activists to consider whether the habits might have some use in social justice work, and within a year they had constituted the new order. Today, with more than 83 houses on four different continents, the Sisters offer health outreach, support, and, at times, protest on behalf of queer communities. Weekly Roundup: Moms for Book Bans, Dads for Dictators
Brad begins by offering a metaphor for understanding how Christian nationalists and others view the United States: A complementarian marriage. The role of the cishet dad-husband as protector and the mom-wife as innocent homemaker provides a window into why so many conservatives want to ban books and are calling for dictators. In the following segments Brad and Dan examine the ways this metaphor is playing out in the work of Moms for Liberty, Matt Walsh, and others across the country. Brad explains why he thinks that the Right will not flinch when their leaders suggest setting up camps for trans people. Dan unpacks the ways that Moms for Liberty is using a micro minority to take over schools. Brad relates their efforts to the Daughters of the Confederacy. Special Episode: ONE NATION, ALL BELIEFS -I Am Dying Out Loud
On this episode of ONE NATION, ALL BELIEFS (subscribe links below): Dave Warnock was caught up in the Jesus movement of the 70s and lived the bulk of his life as a Charismatic Evangelical, serving as a pastor on three different church staffs. Following several years of internal struggle, Dave came to the conclusion in 2011 that he no longer believed in a personal God. In 2019 he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), a progressive neurodegenerative disease with an average 3-5 year life expectancy. In early 2023, Dave, along with Bevin Jett and Sheila Hoover, founded I Am Dying Out Loud, a nonprofit organization with the mission to enhance the quality of life by advocating against the unwanted intrusion of religion in the areas of healthcare, dying, and death, and by providing “bucket list” moments for those diagnosed with ALS. https://iamdyingoutloud.org/ Subscribe for $5.99 a month to get bonus episodes, ad-free listening, access to the entire 500-episode archive, Discord access, and more: https://axismundi.supercast.com/ Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/one-nation-all-beliefs/id1686172926 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0HIjnVZjUwY8H1PD0M7F04?si=0964303c509d490f Megaphone: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/SWAJ1268297626?selected=SWAJ5941991368 https://www.au.org/ Learn more about your ad choices. It's In the Code Ep. 53: A Suffering Servant
The previous episode explored how Christian churches, as well as other religious, non-profit, and volunteer organizations, exploit the idea of “having a servant’s heart,” or service or giving of one’s time and resources, for their own gain. In this episode, Dan considers how the idea of serving to the point of “suffering” elevates this abusive pattern within Christian organizations. Beginning with a discussion of the “suffering servant” idea in the Hebrew Bible, Dan traces how this idea of suffering has become part of the “source code” of Christianity, and why that matters for people today. Prophecy and Political Violence - From the Seven Mountains to J6
What if told you 9% of Americans think only Christians should be eligible for citizenship? Or if 14% thought that their church should have veto power over American law? What if there was evidence that belief in modern day prophets is linked to political violence and extreme belief? This is exactly what sociologist Paul Djupe found in recent studies on the topic. Weekly Roundup: Vigilantism - So Wrong, yet so Right
Brad and Dan begin by analyzing the surge in vigilantism on the American Right. Brad discusses how vigilantism often rises in times when there is a question of who belongs in the community - and what it means to have a working social order. Dan discusses the ways that vigilantism rises when law and order no longer work - and the perceived need for violence beyond the law takes hold. In the second segment they argue that the bevy of far-right laws passed in Florida represent the attempt to make the vigilante's myopic vision of social order the law.
