Ep 112Donald Trump and the problem of having a BEE in your bonnet
The world and its distant relatives have had their say about the theatrical meeting between South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and US President Donald Trump. Is there anything more to say? The answer is, well, yes. Particularly, it turns out about golf, and the process of telling fibs not only about contentious local and international events, but more importantly, about your handicap. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss these and other important matters, including the utility and problems of “equity equivalents” when it comes to Black Economic Empowerment. Take a listen. Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro.Music & Design by Bernard Kotze.Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 111The inconvenience of knowing the whole truth
For philosophers, the truth is indivisible. But sometimes, there are those among us who think that the truth should not be divided, as such, but … why use it all? Particularly when it's really only necessary to use part of it - for reasons of convenience and utility, you understand. You just use the part that makes them look good. In this podcast, Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor-at-Large Tim Cohen discuss politicians and businesses using the convenient segmental approach to the truth over the past week. And speaking of US President Donald Trump, what is going to happen when he meets President Cyril Ramaphosa later this week? The best guess is that the partial truth will be plain to see.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 110SA winning international team events, losing local common purpose.
What a day. The first Afrikaner “refugees” leave for the USA. On the same day, SA topped the tables in the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, winning two and coming third in another, breaking a national record. The 4x100 victory came against the mighty US team, which has won 15 Olympic gold medals in the event over the years, and the Canadian team, which won the most recent Olympic medal. As this was all going down, 50-odd Afrikaners arrived in Washington on route to Texas, where they will take up their refugee status. What is the difference between these two events? Why is SA so successful in sporting integration and so bad at political integration? Listen in.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 109Feasting at the Buffett
When hunger strikes, the fiscally responsible glutton knows what to do: scout around until you find a hotel with a buffet and pile your plate like it’s a game of edible Jenga. Essentially, that is what investors have achieved over the years by backing Warren Buffett, who retired at 94 over the weekend; investment Jenga. The Economist calculates that from 1965, when Buffett made his first investment, to the end of last year, Berkshire’s value rose by more than 5.5 million percent, on average 20% annually. The S&P 500 gained 39,000% over that time. Buffett is now worth $162 billion, and he is now going to devote himself to giving most of it away. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen unnecessarily add to the superlatives, and conclude that SA could do with some of that investment nous. Enjoy.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 108Is freedom just another word for nothing left to lose?
Most arguments in favour of freedom are positive: the correlation between freedom and human development goals is, generally speaking, pretty strong. But actually, the most powerful arguments in favour of freedom are negative: if you live in a place where freedom is limited and autocrats, your chances of ending up dead are pretty high. South Africa celebrated Freedom Day this week, and in this podcast, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and journalist Tim Cohen discuss the famous - and famously cryptic - line in Kris Kristofferson’s song Me and Bobby McGee, “freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose”. And we conclude, actually, it isn’t.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 107The popes legacy and the future of the budget
Pope Francis, not for nothing the namesake of St Francis of Assisi, died on Easter weekend, a wonderful coda to a remarkable career. Francis was a compassionate reformer who tried to modernise the church, and it was a mark of his humility that he appeared in public to deliver Easter blessings less than 24 hours before his death. In this podcast, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor-at-Large Tim Cohen discuss his legacy, lessons for those outside the church, and, would you believe, the significance of his passing at the age of 88. Barnes also has an idea that could obviate the VAT increase: a new office in government - the office of fair market value. Enjoy! Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 106Tariffs have two "f"s
The stock markets around the world are in a funk following the decision by US President Donald Trump to impose "reciprocal tariffs" on more or less all the US's trading partners - except they weren't reciprocal, they were punitive. Then, there was a rumour that the tariffs would be put on pause. The markets went up. But that was denied. The markets went down. Then, they were put on pause. The markets went up. This is why, according to entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen, the word "tariffs" ends in the letters FFS.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 105My f** Marelize!
A while ago now, a Twitter post called “My f** Marelize!” went viral. The pathos, the humor, and the undercurrent of frustration were all captured in an 18-second video of a mother trying to teach her hapless daughter (we assume) how to ride a bicycle and avoid the only obstacle in miles: the goal posts. That short video is oddly a great representation of our current moment as a country, faced as we are with both internal and external calamities. In this podcast, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor at large Tim Cohen discuss the Trump Tariff Tantrum and the possible end of the Government of National Unity. The conclusion? We need to learn how to ride the bike, but properly this time.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 104The nappy law of politicians and the futility of tariff wars
Government is always looking for money to take rather than money to make, says entrepreneur Mark Barnes in this discussion over the news of the week with Daily Maverick editor at large Tim Cohen. Which leads us to the delicate issue of the Nappy Law of Politics - and business, as it happens. With the GNU on the brink (again!) over the budget, we discuss its successes and failures, and the futility of tariffs. But why, then, are they so popular? See nappies above.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 103What is the (diplomatic) state of brand SA?
In this episode entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick editor at large Tim Cohen discuss branding - and that's not the kind you do to the cow. How important are brands (very), how do you work out what a brand is worth (complicated), and most importantly, how is Brand South Africa doing? (Even more complicated). Conclusion: SA’s brand has taken a knock, but it's holding up, and potentially could be a lot better. How? Listen up.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 102SA sources of capital are (expletive deleted)
Let's get some things straight. There are only three (expletive deleted) sources of capital; debt, tax, and foreign investment. Well, actually there are more, but as entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Larger Tim Cohen discuss, these are the main three, and SA needs to focus on the third because SA’s debt is too high and its taxes too onerous. We also discuss diplomacy and swearing; you might not think the two go together, but they do.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 101We are 100 podcasts old, but let's have a budget for the youth
SA’s Government of National Unity is trying to get its budget passed for the second time this week, but there is something missing in the mix: growth. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss the lack of transformative projects and - since our podcast is now over a century old - how age plays into the process of a growth mentality. Also, Johannesburg.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 100The new world (dis)order: is that an iceberg we see?
Like much of the world, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and journalist Tim Cohen were mesmerised by the Oval Office showdown between US president Donald Trump and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy which ended in name-calling, finger pointing, and no deal. It's tempting to extrapolate too far, but it's clear a rift has developed between the post-war diplomatic reality. In this podcast we discuss this issue and how it affects South Africa, particularly our delayed budget discussions. TL;DR - self-sufficiency is the new global watchword.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 99What’s brewing in that VAT?
What was that phrase, “Vat hom!”? Well, I think we can all agree that suggesting a two percentage point increase in VAT, was really going for it. The budget and the proposed VAT increase was, somewhat inevitably, the main topic of conversation between entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick editor at large Tim Cohen. One question remains: what about looking at a few savings here and there? Just asking. We also cover other issues of national and global importance, like investments, sovereign wealth funds and smelly feet.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 98Everybody’s war and nobody's budget.
It's budget week, which means it's a period of festivity and celebration as we all look forward to higher taxes. Not necessarily. We will see on Wednesday. In the meantime, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss the budget this week among many other topics, somewhat in trepidation. And we reach the conclusion that the country needs to confront its weaknesses head-on and not keep looking for incremental improvements. Will that happen? Not sure. And will there be peace in Ukraine? And who drilled a hole in the Gautrain tunnel? These are things we need to know.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 97Legalise artisanal mining, leave for the USA, and stealing without a conscience
When you turn your friends into your enemies, don’t all your enemies suddenly become friends - with each other? There is an intrinsic design flaw when it comes to alienating your friends, but US President Donald Trump doesn’t seem to care. But hey, he’s not totally friendless - Trump has reached out to Afrikaners and initiated a new great trek. It sticks in the craw that it takes someone like Trump to point out weaknesses in local legislation like the Expropriation Act, but that’s what entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss. “When you apply force to achieve an objective, and not persuasion, you end up with a fight and not a result,” says Barns. Listen up.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 96Exciting Deep Seek, middling mining, boring repairs and maintenance
There are few things more fun than buying a new car, and few things more boring than taking it in for regular and expensive services. But the utility of making regular repairs can extend the life of everything, including as it happens, your own life. In South Africa, repair culture is in urgent need of repair. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and journalist Tim Cohen try to keep their sagacity in repair by talking through the latest Trump Tantrum, the state of mining in South Africa and the news of the week. By all means, join us.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 95Is there enough common ground in GNU in the year of the snake?
Slightly inevitably, the GNU is going through a bout of indigestion. How serious is it? Should we be buying gold, selling the rand and stocking up on loo paper? Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and financial journalist Tim Cohen discuss why it is that political parties seem to be more interested in their internal battles than they are in the problems of the SA population at large. Somewhat appropriately, we are about to go into the year of the snake according to the Chinese lunar system. And while we are on the subject of slithering, how was US President Donald Trump’s first week in office? Busy, it turns out.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 93Playing the Trump card - again. And the matric results ... degrees of success.
There is no escape. This week's news is going to be dominated by the inauguration of The Donald. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and journalist Tim Cohen discuss how the world will change from this week - and how it won't. All of a sudden, the world itself seems to be a different place, and we will all need to look to our laurels - if we have them. And SA's 2024 crop of matriculants seems to have laurels in huge quantities with pass rates increasing impressively. That means applications at SA's universities are now overwhelming. But is a university degree the be-all and end-all of education and training? This and other stuff; take a listen.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 92The morality of yachts and the ANC's January 8th statement
What is the difference between being adaptable and actually adapting? Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and journalist Tim Cohen discuss this and other important Darwinian questions, including the relationship between humans and yachts. And that raises the question, is Africa adapting or is it just adaptable? Are names of oceans adapting, like the African Ocean for example, formally known (somewhat unfairly) as the Indian Ocean. Its a wild start to Januworry, and we are only half way through!Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 92The certainty of uncertainty. And numbers ... big numbers
Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and financial journalist Tim Cohen discuss the new year, and what we can expect, coming to the conclusion that we don't actually know what to expect because, well, global uncertainty. But we do discuss ways to operate in an uncertain world, and strategies you might use. Security threats are also part of uncertainty, so the question arrises, how many members of a personal security detail does, say, the mayor of Johannesburg actually need? And lots of crucial, large numbers.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 91The year of elections ends mixed, like the best cocktails. Cheers!
Remember when Christmas was a day? Then it became a season. Black Friday, you would think, would forever be a day, that day being, you guessed it, Friday. Turns out, Black Friday is now fast becoming a week, and will inevitably soon become a season. And talking of seasons, it has been the season of gambling, dubious state financing, election upsets, struggling governments and regime change. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and business editor Tim Cohen discuss all of the above, and more in this, our final podcast for the year.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 90Presidential powers are just another brick in the wall
Pardon the confusion, but didn’t President Joe Biden say he would not pardon his son Hunter Biden, who was convicted recently on tax and gun charges? Turns out, he did say he would not. But then he did issue the pardon over the Thanksgiving weekend. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss forgiveness and, critically, whether you can forgive yourself. One example would be the Mayor of Johannesburg Dada Morero forgiving himself for cutting off his own electricity and water, because the city leased properties from an ANC property cadre and city landlord who did not pay his utilities bill on time. It's confusing, but karma has its own logic, as you might discern from this week’s StandUp! Business podcast.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 89Creating money and the value of bananas
How much is a banana stuck to the wall with duct tape actually worth? Or, to put it another way, have we all gone bananas? Which leads on to the more important topic of the value of money, and that involves inflation. And interest rates. This week entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss last week's small interest rate cut, whether it was enough, and issues related to debt. Then there is the rugby and the tricky issue of height.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 88Should we rent out Simonstown for bitcoin?
Is it Cop or cop-out; it's hard to tell. The UN’s Conference of Parties (COP) on climate action and sustainability is currently happening in Baku, Azerbaijan - the second time the conference is taking place in a petro-state. Unsurprisingly, it's currently hard to breathe in Deli. But, on the other hand, bitcoin is booming, raising the question of whether SA should rent out Simonstown, now that SA’s navy is down to a single ship. Other than that, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss why cheating on your CV is becoming so prevalent in SA. We don’t discuss the weather at all.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 87Money buys power; will PPP’s really work? + … ?
How is it possible that someone so obviously flawed as a person can become president of the world's most powerful country? Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and financial journalist Tim Cohen (try!) to explain that, and other imponderables, like the global outbreak of oligarchism. Locally we discuss the powerhouse standoff between the City of Johannesburg and Eskom, and ask whether PPP's are always the solution.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 86Elections, elections everywhere: change is gonna come, organised crime and the underground economy.
Botswana voters have just done something incredible - they voted out the party that has been running the country for 58 years and which brought about one of the continent’s greatest economic achievements. This is just one of the surprising election results around the world, which includes elections everywhere from Japan to Moldova. And of course, there is the big one this week. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick Editor at Large Tim Cohen discuss what might be underpinning these changes. Organised crime is in focus this week with the asasanation of Cape crime boss Mark Lifman. And the above ground criminality is reflected below ground too with an extraordinary number of zama zama’s being forced out of an old mine in Orkney.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 85The medium term budget per capita, D-day for the USA
Why is the medium-term budget statement like Johannesburg water supply? This is one of the key questions in our podcast this week, in which entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor discuss the said budget, some related questions like SA's recent per capita GDP growth, and how it relates to the government of national unity. We also discuss the D-day election in the US, solutions to Cape Town's traffic jams, and the art of slapping. Seriously.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 84LIVE RECORDING: The future, the election and the rugby
For the first time in front of a live audience, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor Tim Cohen discuss the latest turn of events in the South African Rugby Union buyout saga, the twists and turns in the US election and the surprising similarities - and differences - between the state of the equity markets in 2024 with those in the dot com era of 2000. And we take questions from the audience of some of Johannesburg’s most influential lawyers and bankers brought together by leading business rescue house Metis.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 83Springboks for sale; the forces of nature and technology
This week, entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor Tim Cohen discuss the proposed sale of a stake in the Springboks (skande!) and the politicisation of the weather (double skande!). It turns out the weatherman is not out to get you, but maybe the weather authorities are - particularly if you live in Johannesburg.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 82Should the PIC split, and the world unite?
Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor Tim Cohen discuss whether the state pensioners’ fund manager, the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) which now has R2.7-trillion under management, should be split up. Also, does the GNU mean SA will stop drifting into the ambit of authoritarian regimes? And finally, is sports betting a financial risk to sports enthusiasts or a financial boon to sporting codes. Or both!Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 81Chickens and China ...
Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor Tim Cohen discuss the importance of chickens and China this week, in light of the application for VAT-exempting chicken. This leads to a proposal by Mark that we dispense with tax entirely other than VAT, which could see feathers flying. Moving on to our authoritative knowledge on other topics, we discuss who South Africans would prefer to be the next US president and conclude anyone other than Trump would probably be fine.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 80Diamonds, the weather, municipalities: the challenge of adapting to change
Are diamonds really forever? This is just one of the questions we chat about this week. There are so many changes taking place, as the dramatic snowfall in KZN underlines, it raises the question of how do you roll with the changes. Adaption is harder than many imagine, and small problems can become very big, very fast, as SA's failing municipalities show. But some things don't change: we will always have the braai - happy heritage day.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 79Our pet subject: the interesting things about interest rates
Pets, specifically cats and dogs, suddenly became a topic of international interest after they somehow contrived to make an appearance at the debate between former US President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Pity the poor town of Springfield, Massachusetts whose city officials now have to investigate whether legal Haitian immigrants are “eating the cats”. It's our pet topic, as is international interest rates which will start coming down this week. What are the consequences and who loses, who gains? We discussed another pet topic, immigration, but this time a recent survey of African youth, who now want to leave the continent in eye-popping numbers.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 78Financial skullduggery and ineptitude from VBS, to the construction mafia to Transnet.
Lots of important financial news came tumbling out this week concerning Transnet, the Post Office, Eskom, the construction mafia and VBS. Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick editor Tim Cohen discuss the difference - and the similarities - between fraud and ineptitude, which actually quite often go together. We also talk about the extent to which wealth has grown around the world (it has, by leaps and bounds) and where it grew the most. There is also a sports riddle.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 77The magic of Trillion $ companies and a couple of pots
Investment banker Mark Barnes and business journalist Tim Cohen discuss the ongoing financial scandals revealed over the past week, include the potential bankruptcy of water boards and ongoing "Red Roses" PPE tender scandal. We also discuss the inauguration of the two-pot system for retirement savings, which leads to large discussion about the nature of debt. We consider the concept of trillion, companies with market capitalisation of over a trillion dollars, and particularly Nvidia and its future.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
Ep 76No consensus on the census | Reviving Joburg city centre | the ROI of university courses
Mark Barnes and Tim Cohen consider the consequences of a failed census. They are probably a lot more serious than most people think. Disputes about the validity of SA's 2022 census will complicate services provision, and highlight the degree of semi-gration out of Johannesburg. Another fire in downtown Joburg underlines once again the need for decisive, informed, and active leadership. Also, what financial benefits do you get from which university degree? Calculations on the return on investment of American degrees reveal that your education investment could result in losing money, particularly if you study acting. But engineering and tech are of course winners. Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro.Music & Design by Bernard Kotze.Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 75When will the political merry-go-round settle | Is working from home working
Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick Editor Tim Cohen discuss the end of the EFF bromance between new MK member Floyd Shivambu and EFF leader Julius Malema, and wonder about when the politics will settle. The move is emblematic of a new era in SA politics as a result of the end (for the time being anyway) of single party dominance. The result is that political affiliations are becoming more variable and loyalties will probably be less enduring. The same is true of municipal politics as Johannesburg gets yet another new mayor. On another topic, what's happening with drinks after work? Why are they not happening any more and do they affect cohesion at work.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 74Are government and business NBF’s: the real numbers about the olympics
Entrepreneur Mark Barnes and Business Maverick Editor Tim Cohen discuss the reasons why government and business are becoming new best friends - and the limits of the new relationship. Why is it happening, and what are the consequences? They also discuss why it is that the phrase “per capita” explodes on Google search in New Zealand during the olympics. The olympics came to and end the past Sunday, and the medal count tells an interesting story about how the world is developing. South Africa did well comparatively during the event, but there is still an open question about whether SA athletes get sufficient support from our Olympic Committee.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 73Hundred metre dash | Volatility | Crowd wisdom
This week we discuss the sporting spirit of the Olympics, the stock market correction and volatility likely to follow, and whether common purpose finally prevailsProduction and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.

Ep 72Olympics, the GNU starts well and the retailers race for market share
Did you know how much actual gold there is an Olympic gold medal? (Hint: not much.) 2024 is the year of elections with huge numbers of voters expressing their choices. And how is it going so far. You have to say pretty well. And what about the important process of shopping. How is retail changing. Its all in our podcast today.Production and Editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro. Music & Design by Bernard Kotze. Created by Mark Barnes, Tim Cohen, Bernard Kotze & Branko Brkic.
