Recognising pain in the ridden horse with Sue Palmer
Recognising pain in the ridden horse – use of the ridden horse pain ethogram (RHpE) with Sue Palmer (interviewed by Dr Gillian Tabor) “All too often, pain in ridden horses is labelled as ‘bad’ behaviour. The apparently ‘sound’ horse is ‘naughty’, ‘lazy’, ‘difficult’, ‘explosive’, ‘spooky’, ‘nappy’, and more. These labels are wrong. Pain impacts all aspects of a horse’s performance, including its partnership with the rider, and its potential to progress. It does not always create lameness. Relieving pain can lead to improved performance, a deeper partnership, and greater potential.” Sue and Gillian discuss the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE), developed by Dr Sue Dyson and colleagues. The RHpE is a checklist of 24 behaviours to check for musculoskeletal pain in the ridden horse. Horses can only demonstrate pain through their behaviour and performance. Only through first recognising pain can we then address it through accurate assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Sue Palmer and Dr Sue Dyson have recently published ‘Harmonious Horsemanship: Use of the Ridden Horse Ethogram to Optimise Potential, Partnership and Performance’. Sue Palmer has worked in the equestrian industry for over 25 years, is an ACPAT and RAMP registered Chartered Physiotherapist, and based in Staffordshire, UKhttps://www.harmonioushorsemanship.co.uk/------------To find out more about becoming a member >>> https://drdavidmarlin.com/join-now/Not a Member? Dr David Marlin - Vitamin E, could your horse be deficient?
Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for horses, much like it is for humans and other animals. Vitamin E cannot be made and must be obtained from the diet. It plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including immune system support, muscle function, and the elimination of free radicals that can damage cells and tissue. Horses that have access to fresh, green pasture typically get an adequate amount of Vitamin E from their diet. However, those that are kept in stables/stalls or fed on a diet consisting mainly of hay might require supplementation.Dr David Marlin explains the extensive importance of Vitamin E, with a discussion around:How much does a horse need? What are the different types of Vitamin E?What does it do for the horse? The importance of seleniumConcerns around overdose of selenium and Vitamin EWhat supplements are available? How much should you supplement your horse (according to their circumstances)? To see a full article on the subject, the supplement per horse table and learn more about the different supplements available head over to the website.Learn More about Vitamin EArticle - Vitamin E for Horses and PoniesArticle - Feed Materials In Focus – Vitamin E Supplements for Horses ComparedArticle - Can vitamin C help my horse breathe?Article - Feed Materials In Focus – Vitamin E Supplements for Muscle Support Reviewed.------------To find out more about becoming a member >>> https://drdavidmarlin.com/join-now/Not a Member? Helen from the Dr David Marlin team interviews Dr Heather Cameron-Whytock - Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Central Lancashire and researcher into THREE of eventings key horse safety studies. With colleagues, Heather has conducted three significant studies into Horse falls at events. Heather’s 2023 study on horse falls in British Eventing competition was the largest scientific study ever published, and her previous research with FEI data has led to significant safety discussions about fence types and their order during a cross-country course and a closer subjective look at what constitutes a risk factor.Equestrian eventing is a dangerous Olympic sport, with 16 rider and 69 horse fatalities at competition in the last 10 years. Despite this, there is limited research that aims to improve safety within the sport. To find out more about Heather and the research she has been involved with, head over to the website and learn more.Plus, Heather will be LIVE on the Dr David Marlin platform on Thursday, 2nd November, to discuss her research in more depth with a closer look at the numbers and what we can learn from the findings.Register for the webinar here - LIVE Webinar – Dr Heather Cameron-Whytock on Horse Falls, 3 studies, what have we learned?------------To find out more about becoming a member >>> https://drdavidmarlin.com/join-now/Not a Member? Dr Gillian Tabor reports from Day 2 and 3 of ICEL9
In these podcasts, Dr Gillian Tabor reviews her highlights from the International Canine and Equine Locomotion Conference (ICEL9) held in Utrecht in August 2023. All the recognisable names from biomechanics research were there, which makes for a very exciting meeting to be at. If you have ever written an essay or a dissertation that refers to equine movement, you will have referenced at least one of these experts - Hilary Clayton, Rene van Weeren, Filipe Serra Braganza, Lars Roepstorff, Thilo Pfau, Marie Rhodin or Russell Mackechnie-Guire – that were there this year.On the first two days, there was the opportunity to listen to keynotes and presentations of the latest research, and on the third day, there were practical sessions based on both canine and equine locomotion. Dr Gillian Tabor was able to present two abstracts, one on posture assessment and one on canine flyball. There are many study presentations that she doesn't mention, so take a look at the published abstracts for more details. Sugar and Starch - Good OR Bad? by Dr David Marlin
In this episode, Dr David Marlin looks closer at Sugar and Starch - Are they always bad for horses?Sugar and starch are everywhere in our horse’s diets. Even grass can be a source of sugar and starch. And in fact, our horses might struggle on a ZERO sugar and ZERO starch diet, which is good news because it would be impossible to achieve. And part of the sugar and starch problem is how it’s fed. So a horse eating grass or hay with a moderate sugar or starch content over the course of several hours will cope better from a metabolic perspective than if the same volume of sugar and starch were given in one go in a hard feed that could be eaten in 10 minutes!Dr David Marlin has delved into great detail on this subject, and to read and learn more on this, please check out the extensive article on the website here >>> https://drdavidmarlin.com/sugar-and-starch-good-or-bad/----Not a Member? Dr Gillian Tabor reviews the latest research on how haynets affect horses - Mon 21/11/22
Dr Gillian Tabor is a charted physiotherapist specialising in the treatment and rehabilitation of horses. In this podcast, Gillian reviews a very recent research paper, Posture and Pull Pressure by Horses When Eating Hay or Haylage from a Hay Net Hung at Various Positions by Hodgson and colleagues. Through her research review, Gillian poses questions about how feeding from haynets differs from how wild horses graze on grass and occasionally on bushes/trees.The study looked at height of haynets, the pressure exerted by horses, the difference between hay and haylage and how double-haynets affect the horse's feeding practice.Questions asked:Does hay or haylage affect how a horse eats, taking forage from a haynet? Does the height of a haynet affect the horse? With the frustration of feeding from haynets does this encourage the horse to exert more pressure? And how does all of the above affect the horse's musculoskeletal system and the way their teeth work/move?Gillian and the researchers compare our domesticated horses to wild horses, what we feed them and how we provide that feed whilst trying to ensure they are getting a suitable type of forage, amount of forage and regularity of forage without causing weight/obesity issues (and the associated detrimental health effects of this), whilst ensuring they get enough forage to protect against stomach issues and ulcers.Gillian reviews the research to help us find the answers so that we can care for our horses in a way that improves their lives.
