Squiz Shortcuts: NASA’s return to the moon
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (more commonly known as NASA) is on the brink of launching its first crewed mission to the moon in 50 years. It’s a momentous occasion, but it’s not without a lot of questions. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll take a look at why the mission is happening now, why it’s been such a long time between drinks, and why some people have raised concerns about the mission’s safety. Squiz Recommends: Watching: Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks dramatises what happened on that mission. It takes some liberties to keep the story rolling but it’s considered by space buffs to be one of the most historically and technically accurate movies ever made. Reading: NASA’s Artemis page pretty much answers any questions you can think of about all of the Artemis missions planned… Reading: This BBC story has a stack of cool facts about the moon, like what it’s made of (they compare it to “a chocolate-covered cherry” in terms of its layers)... And here’s the CNN article we mentioned about the heat shield issues with Artemis 1… Got a suggestion for a Squiz Shortcut topic? Squiz Shortcuts: A shark attack spike
A recent spate of shark attacks has restarted the national conversation around the apex predators we share the ocean with when we go for a swim… In NSW in particular - where 4 attacks have happened in the past week - experts say recent rain, murky water and warmer seas are creating ideal conditions for bull sharks, and authorities are warning people to stay out of the water until it clears… This is a recurring topic for Australians - Claire and Kate did a Shortcut on it 5 years ago - so we thought it was a good time to play that again for you. In the ep, they look at our history of shark attacks, why they seem to be becoming more prevalent, and what we can do to prevent them… Squiz recommends: Reading: One thing that’s come up a lot in coverage of the shark attacks over the past week has been the rising number of bull sharks off NSW beaches and in Sydney Harbour in particular. If you’re interested in some further reading on that, The Conversation has published a helpful article that delves into some of the reasons behind it. Reading: And Kate has recommended a piece that discusses how Aussies, as a nation of beach-lovers, can manage the risk posed by sharks without giving up swimming in the ocean - that’s by Andre Slade in Ocean Swims.… Send us your questions: Our next episode of Ask the Squiz is out next Thursday. If you’ve got a question about the news that you’d like Claire and Andrew to tackle, email us at [email protected] or drop us a voice note here and you might hear yourself on the pod. Squiz Shortcuts: Why Hate Speech Laws Are So Hard
The Albanese Government has recalled parliament this week to try to push through new laws on hate speech and guns in the wake of the Bondi terror attack. But it's been a messy few days - the proposed laws have been widely criticised, and the government has already had to abandon key parts of the package. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we'll take a look at what was actually proposed, whether it would make a difference, and why it's all come unstuck politically… Squiz Recommends: Reading: The issue of social cohesion has been raised a lot in the aftermath of the Bondi terror attack. With that in mind, this piece in The Conversation looks at some key areas to be examined by the upcoming royal commission into antisemitism. Listening: This episode of The Front by the team at The Australian discusses the position the Albanese Government finds itself in post-Bondi… Got a question for our Ask the Squiz ep? Squiz Shortcuts: The uprising in Iran
Massive protests in the Middle Eastern country of Iran have been taking place over the last few weeks. Watching: For something a bit lighter – and not suggesting this is particularly historically accurate – but the 2012 film Argo, which won Best Picture, is set during the Iran hostage crisis of the late 70s/early 80s and is worth a watch.
