Since he was born in Kolkata, his first nickname on the Mumbai maidans was Rosogulla. By the time he became a seasoned pro for Mumbai in the 1980s, the moniker had changed to Tangdi. Not only did he turn down the easier way of representing Bengal in Ranji Trophy, he toiled to lead Mumbai in Ranji Trophy on the back of his exploits at the top of the order.
