In the post-WWII era, Spokane grappled with escalating traffic congestion. To alleviate the issue, the city constructed North and South Sprague Way in 1954, bypassing downtown and connecting Third and Second Avenues to Sprague. This project, despite challenges from rocky terrain and railroads, was a $1.25 million endeavor completed in 1954. Initially hailed as a solution, it was later deemed a temporary fix as Interstate 90 opened in the 1970s, diverting traffic and quieting the Sprague Way cutoffs. The James E. Keefe Bridge, completed in 1984, further expanded traffic flow.
