Stephen M. Smith established his funeral business in Spokane in 1889, launching with partners in downtown buildings before constructing the Spokane Casket Company in Peaceful Valley. By 1911, he invested $130,000 in a grand new headquarters at 1124 West Riverside Avenue, designed in French rococo style by Alfred Jones and Joseph Levesque. The building housed funeral services, lodging rooms, and a crematorium, serving as a prominent mortuary for nearly 90 years. It was added to the Riverside Avenue National Historic District in 1976 and later restored as North Coast Plaza offices by Bob Ogden in 1988.
