On July 1, 1976, the Spokane Weekly Chronicle, founded in 1881, ceased publication after 96 years, mirroring its founding date. Initially launched by James Glover, A.M. Cannon, and J.J. Browne, it was later acquired by the Spokane Daily Chronicle. The weekly shifted to printing legal notices but became impractical with modern printing. Meanwhile, in 1926, Spokane parents were puzzled by new report cards grading citizenship traits. Earlier, in 1853, the anti-slavery Provincial Freeman debuted in Windsor, Ontario, edited by Samuel Ringgold Ward and Mary Ann Shadd Cary, North Americas first Black woman publisher.
