Male red-winged blackbirds are arriving early in North America, particularly in the Inland Northwest, to claim prime spots and prepare for breeding season. Theyre bulking up on food and defending territories in marshes, fields, and along waterways. Females arrive weeks later, choosing mates based on territory quality and males flashy displays and songs. Nests are built in dense vegetation, often holding four eggs. Males chase off intruders and some territories host up to fifteen females, making red-wings one of the most polygynous bird species.
