In the 1940s, H.B. Gillinghams Gillingham Block at East Sprague Avenue and Crestline Street in East Spokane became a significant cornerstone. It housed an Old National Bank branch and Reicherts Food Center, an independent grocery run by Alex Reichert, a local meat cutter who immigrated from Georgia. Reichert joined the Independent Grocers Alliance to compete with growing chains like Safeway. Despite antitrust concerns, independent stores like Reicherts thrived until 1953 when the bank bought the building for expansion. The site has since hosted various businesses, including the Evergreen Clubs vocational programs and thrift store since the 1980s, now overseen by Frontier Behavioral Health for community rehab efforts.
