Dennis McMullen, a dedicated Bloomsday runner, passed away before his fiftieth race. His family plans to honor him by running the event in his memory. McMullen, a Seattle native, studied music at Stanford, met his wife in Austria, and settled in Spokane. He practiced law, pushed his wife to join the school board, and fully committed to Bloomsday after the tenth race. His approach evolved from running to jogging and walking, drawing him to the events joyful camaraderie. His wife, Cindy, joined occasionally, but mostly stayed home with coffee. In 2022, he went virtual due to a Hawaii trip, and last year, Cindy helped him finish after his pneumonia. His final challenge came on a cruise from Greece, where he caught Salmonella and typhoid fever. Hospitalized for two and a half months, he passed peacefully. This year, relatives will run Bloomsday, carrying his spirit, and Cindy is crafting a quilt from his favorite shirts.
