AccuWeathers New Alert System: Safeguarding Summer Camps from Severe Weather
Last summers devastating flash floods in Texas Hill Country, which claimed the lives of dozens of girls at one camp, highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures at summer camps nationwide. With severe weather events becoming more frequent, camps face threats such as flash floods and storms. In response, AccuWeather has launched a new nationwide alert system to provide real-time forecasts and warnings tailored for camps.
The new system, developed in partnership with the Hunt Preservation Society, delivers site-specific alerts via text and automated calls for threats like floods, lightning, and heat. Camp staff will have 24/7 access to meteorologists and follow-up notifications if no one confirms receipt. The Hunt Volunteer Fire Department has also joined forces to ensure faster responses to emergencies.
