KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I’d still have played my diagnosis in the same way, where I was maintaining a façade on the outside, because you’re going through the trauma inside which will still come out and you’re going to have to deal with it at some point. Over the last year I’ve definitely been dealing with the past trauma of the diagnosis, going through the chemo, the tests and the surgeries. It’s definitely good to keep a brave face and maintain an air of being strong.
  • I was the head of our family in Spain. I had to organise and arrange everything. We had commitments at home with the business, we were working 14 hours a day, we had a lot of animals at home to take care of, and I had to run everything. I couldn’t show any sign of weakness because If I broke down everything else would as well and I couldn’t have that.
  • I felt disappointment within myself because I’m responsible for my own health. That happened because of something I hadn’t dealt with, because of my diet. Our own illnesses come from inside. I felt very disappointed in myself that I had let myself go that far living the lifestyle that I was leading. Nobody can live a full life drinking as I was, smoking as I was, partying as I was, and then working 14 hour days and having a family at the same time, it’s got to break somewhere. I then had to change my perspective to see where I went wrong and how I could correct it to lead a more fulfilling life for me and my family.
  • Change is brilliant. If you’ve got or just been diagnosed with cancer, that’s life’s way of telling you that something has to dramatically change. Change is never ever scary. It might feel scary because it’s a bit different, but once you get into the flow of the change it’s always always for the better.

BEST MOMENTS

‘When I was young, my Mum always taught me not to cry or show any emotion when things were going on. It carried me through every step of the way because I knew that I wasn’t going to die and that my family was going to be OK.’

‘To show my family I was being strong and brave gave them the strength and reassurance that everything was going to be OK.’

‘Showing vulnerability is OK, but – in this situation, from my perspective only – I think you need to be cautious about who I showed my vulnerability to. At that stage in my life there were a lot of people I couldn’t trust.’

‘Knowing yourself is so so important because you’ve got to know that the vulnerability energy needs to come out and you need to know how you’re going to deal with it and when you’re going to face it. You have to be proactive about it.’
