Ep 502Happy marriage, happy home (The Empowered Wife - part 1)
3Rs of Meaningful Housework: simplyconvivial.com/cleanJoin the Empowered Wife book club inside Convivial Circle: https://convivialcircle.comThe Simply Convivial team discusses what it takes to have a happy marriage - and why that's so important.Empowered Wife (find on Amazon: https://amzn.to/45ju0wY ) sounds cringy and feminist, but it's actually about taking responsibility for yourself, about recognizing and stopping excuses and blaming and complaining, and embracing a femininity that enjoys masculinity. It's "empowered" because wives are the relationship keepers, connection-makers; we do a lot to make everyone around us either flourish or flounder in misery. Laura Doyle teaches 6 skills to foster connection, intimacy, with your husband and in a lot of ways, most of them boil down to learning how to be a happy, content, feminine woman - where feminine doesn't mean frilly and flowery, but biologically and culturally feminine - nurturing, relationship-fostering, connection-making, receptive, grateful home-builders. Then she also throughout admonishes women to not belittle men for being masculine, but be quiet when we're uncomfortable with masculine expressions and appreciate being given special treatment because we're women, and to not emasculate our husbands with disrespect - which she goes to great lengths of very normal examples to show how easily we slip into disrespectful expressions. So I'd love to hear some of your takeaways or thoughts from anywhere in the book, really, about what it means to embrace being a woman, being feminine. Ep 497Try this! Cook from your pantry, not from the grocery store
3Rs of Meaningful Housework: simplyconvivial.com/cleanDownload my master pantry list: https://simplyconvivial.com/pantryMost overly elaborate menu planning instructions have you write a grocery list while you plan. After all, you want to have the right ingredients on hand is necessary, right? But that means the menu planning has to happen before you go to the store, which has to happen before you’re able to cook dinner from your plan…and it’s actually tricky to work it all out in real life. I have a better way.Create your pantry basics list, stock those things, buy more when those things are on sale, put meat in the freezer - Then menu plan from what you already have on hand.Separate the planning from the shopping so one isn’t contingent on the other.Mystie Winckler encourages moms to organize their attitudes and get traction at home so we are no longer overwhelmed or frustrated with homemaking. Ep 482Win your day with a post-it note! (with Trisha Leger)
3Rs of Meaningful Housework: simplyconvivial.com/cleanLearn how to use the daily card method: https://simplyconvivial.com/indexcardvideo/This month we’re talking about daily cards, making a brand new to-do list every day with only 3 things on it. Was this something you jumped right into, were you skeptical, what has been your iteration experience with daily cards?Trisha is a Catholic wife and mother making a home and building a domestic church in Southern Arizona. They discuss the concept of 'daily cards' - a strategy that involves making a daily list of just three tasks to focus on. Despite initial skepticism due to its simplicity, Tricia shares how this approach has brought significant clarity and direction to managing daily tasks amidst the chaos of family life. This method encourages focusing on what's truly important each day to feel accomplished by bedtime. Tricia reveals her personal 'top three' tasks, which typically include homeschooling activities and meal preparation, showcasing the practicality of this method in homemaking. They also touch upon how the flexibility of daily cards helps in adapting to unexpected changes, emphasizing its efficacy in bringing structure, prioritizing tasks, and ultimately achieving a cheerful and grace-filled home management.00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction01:14 The Concept of Daily Cards01:41 The Power of Three Daily Tasks04:26 Examples of Daily Top Three Tasks07:39 The Impact of Simplified Organization Community Coaching09:19 The Flexibility of the Daily Card12:33 The Daily Card as a Tool for Mindset Shift13:23 Conclusion: Winning the Day with God's Grace and a Post-itA couple months ago you finished community coaching and I just loved this bit from your final assessment! For your win that stuck most, you wrote: “Take a look at the situation, make a reasonable guess and just start! It's actually a pretty novel idea to me that as my family grows and changes the systems I had in place don't work anymore and the answer isn't always as simple as 'just double the recipe' or 'just run another load of laundry.' I won't find an answer just sitting there wondering where all the groceries or underpants went.” That’s so hilarious and so relatable! I’d assume the daily card has been a tactic that helps with just taking a first step, any step, when you wake up and realize things aren’t working anymore, right? It is a plague for those of us who tend to be both overambitious and overwhelmed - at the same time. We can teeter-totter between having everything together and totally giving it all up as impossible. This is the dreaded boom and bust cycle. The boom and bust cycle is hard on moms. It's hard on families. It's not a good cycle or a good plan.Mystie Winckler encourages moms to organize their attitudes and get traction at home so we are no longer overwhelmed or frustrated with homemaking. Ep 478Household chores got you down? 3 keys to cleaning motivation
3Rs of Meaningful Housework: simplyconvivial.com/cleanLearn to love what must be done: https://simplyconvivial.com/sweepNeed more cleaning motivation? Hate housework? Frustrated with chores? Here's the problem...First, we can feel angry while we clean the house when we focus on finishing or being done with the work and then — too soon after we “finish” — we have to do it again. It’s easy to blame the kids or even our husband for undoing the work, for making messes again, for needing more food or more laundry. When we see housework as a thing we’re supposed to finish, check the work off as done, then the people in our house feel like a problem. We finished the work, but because of others, the work has to be done again. The problem in such cases is only our perspective, not the other people and not the work. We have a wrong view of the nature of housework and the nature of life. We don’t understand our position in relation to our home and family life.**The work of keeping a home is not work that ever stays done. **That’s not a discouraging statement if we look at it rightly.Read more here: https://simplyconvivial.com/2023/housework-makes-me-mad/Mystie Winckler encourages moms to organize their attitudes and get traction at home so we are no longer overwhelmed or frustrated with homemaking. There are wrong ways to use checklists and bad ways to depend on them. Here are the major mistakes I've made while homeschooling with checklists so that you don't have to!1. Making all the homeschool checklists up front at the beginning of the school year.2. Start creating new homeschool checklists from scratch every week.3. Using shorthand and shortcuts on the checklists while homeschooling4. Letting student checklists roam free and loose - checklists need a home!5. Not looking at each kids' checklists - if mom doesn't look at them, neither will the kids.Blog posts about homeschooling teens - How to homeschool a tween: https://simplyconvivial.com/2023/how-to-homeschool-a-tween-a-survival-guide-for-moms/Homeschool Advice: https://simplyconvivial.com/2018/homeschool-advice-inspect-expect/Twelve-year olds are persons too: https://simplyconvivial.com/2018/twelve-year-olds-are-persons-too/The Stages of Homeschooling: https://simplyconvivial.com/2023/the-stages-of-homeschooling/Mystie Winckler encourages moms to organize their attitudes and get traction at home so we are no longer overwhelmed or frustrated with homemaking. Yes, that's a dream. The dream is different from the reality. Checklists aren’t a tool where we offload our responsibility onto our kids. But they are a tool that lets us train them in diligence if we keep up our end of the diligence.Raising an independent learner is more than handing a checklist to a kid and telling him to do it. It takes time, coaching, and consequences after mistakes for kids to learn. There are age-appropriate stages for expecting independent work.
