The atonement refers to the finished work accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross that makes salvation and all its blessings possible. Dr. Allen has written extensively on the subject (see the books mentioned in the introduction to the previous discussion of Calvinism). Strict Calvinists insist that Jesus did not die for the sins of all people, but only the elect. We will see how weak and unfortunate this theological position is.

Are you sure you know what the gospel is? What is it that actually saves a person and what do we need to do or know? You might be surprised that many Christians have a skewed view of this because they don't understand fundamental doctrines like justification and sanctification. Edward’s journey out of drugs and into ministry happened because he remembered his Christian upbringing and people were praying for him. Today, he trains hundreds of pastors as the director of Bible Education by Extension (BEE) in Myanmar. The recent Covid pandemic and military coup has made ministry difficult, but Edward and wife, Hannah, continue to share the gospel of grace in an environment of legalism and Buddhism. There are a lot of things that dominate our lives, but how many of those things are important? Which things will outlive the week, the month, the year? Which will have eternal significance? A balanced life sets proper boundaries and proper goals and one thing about this life is that it's the only time one can believe in Christ as savior. Did you know there's one thing we as believers won't be able to do once we get to heaven? That's evangelism...sharing the gospel. In this grace story, Charlie speaks with Stephanie Hosey, who found the grace of God in Jesus Christ. She was born and raised within the Catholic church and didn't have an understanding that Christ died for her. She only understood the historical facts but didn't believe them for herself. It was through God's gentle nudging that she came to understand the power of God's grace in her life and ultimately why she was in need of a savior and what Christ had done for her. From this new understanding her life changed from living a Christian life that was performance oriented, which is a form of bondage, into living a life by grace. There's a story about C.S. Lewis who was attending the British conference on comparative religions. To paraphrase, during this conference they were debating the question "Is there anything unique to the Christian faith?" The incarnation of Christ maybe? nope. The resurrection? nope. Miracles? nope. Changed life? nope. They couldn't find anything unique as all other religions had something similar (true or not). That is until C.S. Lewis walked in and asked, "What's the rumpus about?" They informed him of the question and his response was "oh, that's easy, it's grace." ...and that was the end of the discussion. There's really nothing else that comes close to Christ's teaching that God's love and relationship with Him come absolutely free. It is unconditional love with no strings attached. It's this idea that's not just unique amongst other religions, but to mankind's very nature. Mankind has a natural aversion to grace. There is something inherent within us that says that we must have something to do with our own salvation; be it the Buddhist eight-fold path, the Hindu doctrine of Karma, the Jewish covenant, and Muslim code of law. Christianity is built on grace, it's what makes our faith unique. If we don't understand this foundational truth, we can end up misapplying things in our daily walk and stunt our growth as believers. This is the topic Charlie takes on in this podcast as he focuses in on Ephesians 2:8-10.

It's so important though that if we lose our understanding of grace, we lose that uniqueness, and end up like any other religion that has or will exist. Grace is a surprise, it's one of the reasons that the world doesn't understand what Christ did. Without grace the everyone struggles in a world of ungrace to find acceptance from others, they struggle for joy, for hope, for assurance. All of these are wrapped up in grace. In this podcast Charlie focuses on John 4:1-30 where he meets a woman at the well. She's getting water and Jesus offers her "living water." Water where she would never need to return to get more and would satisfy her forever. This clearly peaked the woman's curiosity. Jesus stressed the freeness of this water that only He could offer her. It likely made her wonder; who is this man and what is this living water and what's the catch?

What is freedom worth to you? Many have given their lives for it. Many long for it, still others who have it, abuse it. Many don't understand it, and few treasure it. When a person believes in Christ for salvation, who do they have to answer to and what should their motivation be to serve Christ? How do rewards fit into this? Should they be motivated by works or by grace or by rewards? Contrary to common belief, grace doesn't teach license; some people think an emphasis on Grace will produce a Christian who will live however they want. These people motivate a believer from the negative, often making them believe if they don't do good works, salvation must not have been bestowed upon the believer. But this misunderstands grace. Grace teaches us to be responsible for the grace we have received. Charlie addresses this and focuses on the positive and negative motivations to serve. At the end he speaks with Dr. Roger Fankhauser on the motivations for serving and how to deal with sin in your life and in the lives of others.
