Show Notes

Welcome back to the Simple Recipe Box podcast, where we dive into the joy of home cooking. I'm your host, Ben Harper, and today we're transforming your comfort food game with a must-try recipe: the Hot Dago Sandwich. This dish is not just a sandwich; it's a hearty, savory experience that's perfect for a cozy night in or a quick family dinner.

Let’s start with what you’ll need. Grab some high-quality Italian sausage—sweet or hot, depending on your preference. You’ll also need two large bell peppers, any color, sliced; one large onion, sliced; and four crusty sub rolls. For the cooking part, some olive oil, minced garlic, dried oregano, and of course, salt and pepper to taste. And let’s not forget the cheese—mozzarella works beautifully here, melting right into the sausage and peppers.

Now, if you’re ready, let’s get cooking. First, preheat your oven to 375°F—that’s for toasting the sub rolls later. Heat a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add your sliced onions, cooking them until they’re translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Then, toss in the bell peppers and let them soften up with the onions.

Next up, the star of the show: the Italian sausage. Crumble it into the skillet, cooking until it’s nicely browned and fully cooked through. Stir in the minced garlic, dried oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Give everything a good mix to combine those flavors.

While your filling is simmering, slice your sub rolls in half and pop them into the oven. Just a couple of minutes until they’re lightly toasted. Then, it’s assembly time. Spoon that delicious sausage and pepper mix onto each roll, top with a slice of mozzarella, and broil for a minute or two until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

And there you have it, folks—your very own homemade Hot Dago Sandwich. Serve it up with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, or add some chopped parsley and banana peppers for an extra kick.

Remember, the key to a great Hot Dago is in the freshness of your ingredients and not shying away from seasoning it just right. And if you’re looking to save a bit or make this ahead of time, no worries. Prep your sausage and peppers in advance, and just assemble and heat when you’re ready to eat.

That’s all for today’s episode. Hope you’re as excited to try this recipe as I was to share it. For more recipes and kitchen tips, keep tuning in to the Simple Recipe Box podcast. Happy cooking, everyone, and see you next time!
