Ep 225Keep The Food Bowl! Why Dogs Don't Need 100% Hand Feeding #225

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Dog training has its fads and one you might have heard is never feeding your dog from a bowl. This trend of feeding dogs exclusively by hand can get people into trouble. I believe that dogs should not have to earn the right to get fed. Today I'm explaining why at least part of your dog's meals should come from a bowl, alternative feeding methods to enrich your dog, and powerful ways to reinforce your dog that don't involve food. In this episode you'll hear: • Why dogs should be at least partially bowl-fed. • Enrichment ideas for dogs using food. • What I wrote in my book, Ruff Love. • Why I don't advise hand feeding dogs only. • Why dogs need reassurance that food isn't contingent on behavior. • Practical reasons why dogs should learn to eat from a bowl. • How hand feeding dogs only can backfire. • Other ways to reinforce your dog without food. • Why to keep an eye on your dog's weight. Ep 224Unleashing Fluency In Dog Training: Cracking The Canine Communication Code #224

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Before my recent episode on latency in dog training, we took a social media poll on cue response times. 62% of people thought their dogs responded too slow. So, to help, this episode covers all the elements that create fluent behavior and what's truly behind a dog's response time to a cue. One of the most significant elements can be what we believe to be true about dogs. We're also looking at the difference between true fluency and a dog's good grasp of a behavior. In this episode you'll hear: • Why people often mistake partial understanding of a behavior for fluency. • What I mean by generalizing a dog's behavior to all contexts. • About training my "high" Border Collie, Buzz, for agility. • How to create enthusiasm and joy in your dog for behaviors. • My six criteria for dog behavior fluency. • Why instilling joy is always the first step in dog training. • That "will" is a function of skill and environment. • That our beliefs are not truths but personal perceptions. • How we download and accept information from authority figures in our lives. • Why the beliefs and labels of others aren't your truths. • Why I stopped giving dogs "time outs" over a decade ago. • Why I think I've been successful at positive reinforcement dog training. • What to do when frustration, anger, or disappointment sets in with your dog. • That dogs aren't mad or spiteful when acting out, they're dysregulated. • About fright, flight, freeze, or please reactions to stressors. • The questions to ask yourself when toxic thoughts or emotions arise. • Why we need to teach dogs from a place of environmental success in layers of joy. • My steps for releasing limiting beliefs and toxic thinking. Ep 222Get Your Dog To Respond Faster: Latency In Dog Training #222

Visit us at shapedbydog.com When you cue your dog to perform a behavior, do they respond with lightning speed or a leisurely pace? The lag time between your cue and your dog's response is called latency. When I design a training plan for my dogs, latency is built in, because I want super fast responses to cues. We're covering how why dogs might respond slowly and what you can do to fix it. In the episode you'll hear: • What you need to know about latency of behavior. • When to consider a dog's behavior fluent. • Why dogs develop lag times between a cue and response. • What to consider if dogs are slow to respond. • How to leverage arousal states for focused and fast behaviors. • Common mistakes people make that create lag time for dogs. • How to reduce latency with the example of a dog sitting at the door. • Why to take the problem away from the environment. • About using Jean Donaldson's "Push, Stick or Drop" to reduce latency. • When to test the latency of a behavior in new habitats. • That fast responses generalize well to many behaviors. Ep 217Understanding Emotional Regulation In Dogs To Create Calm #217

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Do you know how your dog or puppy self-regulates or dysregulates? Or how your dog self-soothes? Most dog owners don't, and it could be the root of behavioral challenges around your home. Dogs show dysregulation or self-regulation much like humans. Your dog's responses aren't the same as choosing right from wrong but a reflection of emotional regulation. Today I'm breaking down what healthy self-regulation looks like and how to recognize and help your dog's coping mechanisms for a happier, healthier co-existence. In the episode you'll hear: • What you need to know before a visiting dog arrives in your home. • How to recognize self-regulation and dysregulation in dogs. • The definition of canine self-regulation. • That dogs don't choose right from wrong. • What dysregulation looks like in dogs. • That resilience to stress is a byproduct of healthy self-regulation. • That puppies or rescue dogs cannot self-regulate instantly. • The possible signs of dysregulation puppies and dogs display. • Factors that contribute to canine dysregulation. • About my own puppy's and rescue's dysregulation. • How environment impacts self-regulation. • About normalizing certain conditions to help dogs. • What "destructive" dogs are really communicating. • The ways puppies and dogs naturally self-regulate. • About canine self-soothing behaviors and coping mechanisms. • How co-regulation facilitates self-regulation for dogs. In the episode you'll hear: • The pros and cons of England's ban on e-collars. • Why the term "shock collar" triggers some dog trainers. • The three groups of people who use shock collars and why. • Why shocking dogs for 'bad' behaviors is not a solution. • That one of the biggest pet store chains in North America stopped selling e-Collars. • That banning one punishment device could make an even worse one popular. • How the way we choose to train dogs relates to the stories we tell ourselves. • The ways people try to manage their dog's behavior and justifications for e-Collar use. • My curiosity as to why some elite dog sports competitors are still using shock collars. • How the positive reinforcement dog training community can advocate through education. After a road to recovery with dotted with setbacks, I entered This! in the World Team Tryouts for dog agility. In this episode, I'm sharing my plan, my goal, how I achieved it, and how it could impact your dog training, even if you don't do dog sports. In the episode you'll hear: • My strategy to maximize joy for dog sport competitions, matches, and training classes. • Why I consciously chose a lighthearted attitude and commissioned a custom leash that sparks joy. • My planning so that This!'s first agility competition could be a success for her. • A review of our agility and jumpers runs at the big event. • My 5-step strategy for injecting joy into any activity or experience with your dog. • Step 1: Create a goal of maximizing joy. • Step 2: Know the rules around how you're able to reinforce the dog during the event or activity. • How we used a 'chase-tug-restrain' game for joy for This! at the event. • Step 3: Create a strategic plan around where and when you'll provide high value reinforcement. • Step 4: Rehearse the plan. • Step 5: Execute the plan with joy, have fun and celebrate! • How to use FEO / NFC opportunities to create joy for dogs. • How the energy of the crowd supporting me and This! moved me deeply. • Why allowing yourself grace is vital because everyone, including me, was a beginner once. • That joy results from clarity and how that boosts your dog's confidence. Ep 205The Hidden World Of Reinforcement For Dogs And Why You Need To Know

Visit us at shapedbydog.com To become great at reinforcement-based dog training, you have to get great at the use of reinforcement. I'm covering the hidden world of reinforcers for dogs and why to know the what, when, where and who of reinforcement. It goes well beyond the use of training treats and toy rewards. Awareness of everything reinforcing gives exponential ways to multiply the value of reinforcement in your dog training and to understand your dog's behavior. In the episode you'll hear: • How to identify your dog's hidden reinforcers and leverage them to your advantage. • The clear definition of what reinforcement truly is. • Examples of what a dog finds reinforcing and the influence of when, where and with whom it's experienced. • How different conditions can multiply or nullify the value of a reinforcer. • When water makes a great reinforcer and a tip to increase its value when appropriate. • That you don't need super high value reinforcement every time you train. • How interaction and your body language reinforces your dog. • What you need to know about negative reinforcement for unwanted behaviors. • Why the things that lead to dogs chasing are reinforcing. • Types of destructive and productive activities dogs find rewarding. • That where you train, and the conditions greatly impact your training success. • Why every distraction outside of fear is reinforcing to your dog. • Why movement, like a flirt pole, is sometimes better than food rewards around distractions. • What to use to your advantage to create more value for reinforcements when training. Ep 204Dog Behavior And Diet: Recovery For This! Beyond Dog Training Part 2 #204

Visit us at shapedbydog.com In episode 203, I told the story of the behavior struggles I've had with my two-and-a-half-year-old Border Collie This! and the timeline of our challenges that were beyond dog training. And this episode is part two, covering how we began making changes to her diet, the practitioners who helped me help This!, and what I am doing now to ensure that This! has a life of joy. I also want to add a disclaimer that I am not a Veterinarian or Nutritionist. I just want to let you know the journey This! and I have been on together. In the episode you'll hear: • How I narrowed This!'s lack of drive and joy for work down to nutrition. • That you can't dog train a problem that isn't a dog training problem. • How an Austrian naturopath helped me help This!. • Why my naturopath requested photographs of my dogs' gums and what they revealed. • Why I believe a raw food diet is the best option for my dogs. • The help I received from Dr. Laurie Coger, an integrative and functional medicine veterinarian. • The role ancestral geographic origins have in nutrition. • About our IC Peeps roundtable with Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet author Steve Brown. • About Dr. Peter Dobias and the results of the heavy metal analysis of This!'s fur sample. • My process for balancing This!'s diet and what I observed. • How an herbalist used acupressure points to balance This!'s endocrine system. • What I'm doing now in dog training to help This! have joy. • How weekly Flyball classes are helping. • What This! is eating now, and my hope for raw food manufacturers. • The reason I entered This! into World Team Tryouts. • Why I believe This!'s comeback will be bigger than her setbacks. Ep 203Reactive, Unmotivated and Fearful: Finding Resiliency For This! Beyond Dog Training Part 1 #203

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Over the past couple of years, I've documented many challenges my dog This! and I have overcome, like reactivity, fear, resource guarding, and car sickness, to name a few behavior issues. And then, at an agility seminar here at my facility, This! fell apart. Now it's time to put everything together. I have a two-part series outlining a timeline of This!'s struggles and what I've discovered to help her and any other dogs. In the episode you'll hear: • How This! falling apart at an agility seminar was a symptom of a larger problem. • Why you can't dog train something that isn't a dog training problem. • The origins of This!'s name and that there are no coincidences. • What I began noticing about This!'s body mechanics early in puppyhood. • That This! only showed true drive for activities of adrenaline like chasing. • About the reactivity, resource guarding, car sickness, stunted growth, and joylessness experienced by This!. • How anything involving thinking for This! led to her decompressing for hours. • Why my only focus for This! became her joy. • How a naturopath came into my life to help me help This!. • About This!'s growth stall relative to her littermates. • What agility jump grids help us notice in our agility dogs. • This!'s immediate performance improvement after nutritional changes. We're looking at 8 zones in your dog's life, how you can use those zones to your advantage, and what the habits of success look like to get a well behaved dog. The scientific term for setting environments and situations up for your dog's success is 'antecedent arrangements', and understanding how it works will bring you and your dog a life of joy together. In the episode you'll hear: • How to get with your dog what I have with my dogs. • That success and failure leave clues for dog training. • The power of antecedent arrangements for creating success for you and your dog. • About eight zones of your dog's life to use to your advantage. • How the stories we tell ourselves aren't always true and undermine our potential. • Why I believe wholeheartedly that you and your dog can be brilliant. • The Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) cycle that reinforces behavior. • How I helped my dog This! with her fears and reactivity. • Examples of unpredictable situations with dogs and how to manage them. • The deciding factors for having a well-trained dog. Ep 201Can Dog Training Be Effective, Efficient AND Compassionate? #201

Visit us at shapedbydog.com We get a lot of great comments on our videos, and sometimes I come across one that inspires a podcast episode like this one. I'm answering a very thoughtful question that many people might have. Should you abandon one training philosophy for another when results appear elusive? And should you pick a dog training lane and stay in that lane? Professional dog trainers often forget what it's like to be starting out. That can lead to learning overwhelm and students feeling less confident about the education they're getting and giving their dogs, so it's important for everyone to know the direction they are heading. In the episode you'll hear: • A listener question about abandoning a dog training method when results could be around the corner. • Why compassionate, efficient, and effective dog training is the trifecta of my methodology. • The difference between finding behaviors to praise vs. behaviors to punish. • False assumptions that some balanced dog trainers make about positive reinforcement. • That with enough time, any dog training method will work, but there are other considerations. • Questions to ask yourself when your dog doesn't behave as you expected. • How my mentor Bob Bailey defines the difference between a good trainer and a great trainer. • What "behavior is a function of consequence" means with dog training as an example. • Why I believe the use of aversives to change behavior in dog training are antiquated. • The two factors of mechanics and the other 23 hours of the day in dog training progress. Visit us at shapedbydog.com If you've ever owned or seen a dog who suffers from separation anxiety, you know how heartbreaking that can be. I'm sharing a 10-step protocol that will turn the dog training world on its head because it's like nothing that is out there for separation anxiety help. It's the FRIDA Protocol created by two of my European students, who are amazing dog trainers, Nadine Hehli and Simone Fasel, to help their rescue dog Frida with her extreme separation anxiety. The protocol is now helping many more dogs, and I'm bringing you the steps to overcoming canine separation anxiety for our special 200th episode of Shaped by Dog. In the episode you'll hear: • A case study of Nadine and Simone's rescue dog, Frida, who overcame severe separation anxiety. • Why typical approaches to separation anxiety don't work for extreme cases. • The 10 steps of the FRIDA Protocol to help dogs with separation anxiety. • What equipment you'll need to get started, including a snuffle mat and remote feeder. • The foundations for success with the FRIDA Protocol. • Why functional relaxation to create calm for dogs is a critical component. • Reminders about the body language of calm dogs vs. anxious dogs. • When and how to introduce remote feeders and WiFi cameras to work through separation anxiety. • How to begin fading in barriers that allow the dog freedom of movement in their "Fortress of Calm". • When to introduce "Hidden Treasures" for your dog. • Why remote feeders aren't babysitters. • When and how to leave your dog home alone for the first time. • How to create calm relaxation for your dog in other places like the car. Ep 198What Does "Positive Is Not Permissive" Really Mean In Dog Training? #198

Visit us at shapedbydog.com The way we train with positive reinforcement might seem a little out there as we put our dog's emotions first, and if our dog does not do what we want them to do, we don't punish or correct. It might even make you wonder what sort of anarchy we have in our lives with our dogs! But it's not like that at all because one of the guiding principles I've been talking about since the 90s is that positive is not permissive. In the episode you'll hear: • What "positive not permissive" really means. • Why the relationship we have with our dog weaves into everything. • How expectations and consistency create clarity for dogs. • The reasons a dog might not be meeting your expectations. • That dog training can be part of everything you do. • What a day might look like in your life with your dog. • The hierarchy of behaviors to consider. • Why recall, retrieve and relax are my top priorities. • Games you can play with your dog for life skills. • The reason loose leash walking begins at home. • Tips to fit dog training into everyday life with daily quickies. Ep 197Outsmarting Distractions: How To Use Environmental Reinforcement in Dog Training #197

Visit us at shapedbydog.com The expression about Vegas casinos that "the house always wins" is like the one about dog training: The environment always wins. But it doesn't have to be true when you learn to use the environment to your advantage. Mastering reinforcement means understanding what your dog values most, and there are many things dogs value. Once you know where the reinforcement is for your dog, you can build yourself into that reinforcement so that it is you, not the environment, winning your dog's focus. In the episode you'll hear: • The role environments play in your dog's reinforcers. • How "jackpot" dopamine creates value for dogs. • How a negative prediction error encourages dogs to repeat and escalate behavior. • Where counter surfing really starts (and it's not at the counter). • Why you need to be aware of the thing before the thing. • How to neutralize distracting environments to win your dog's focus. • Why training puppies and dogs in the bathroom is ideal in the beginning. • How to grow the environment in your dog training. • What to do when you know your dog will ignore you, with the example of playing with other dogs. • Why and when to give your dog surprise high value rewards. • Tips for building yourself into all the reinforcement your dog receives. Ep 196Why Mastering Reinforcement Is The Linchpin To Reinforcement Based Dog Training #196

Visit us at shapedbydog.com There's a very good chance that you, like me, want to train your dog with reinforcement. It aligns with the kind of person you want to be both for your dog and for the world. To get really good behaviors with dogs as a positive reinforcement trainer, you have to get masterful at all that is reinforcing. That's the topic of this episode, and I'm including case studies of two of my dogs, Buzz and Belief and the layers of learning with reinforcement that create amazing skills. In the episode you'll hear: • A video review and breakdown of retrieve training with my dog, Buzz, from the 90's. • How you troubleshoot dog sports competition training using positive reinforcement. • Examples of popular, but bad, training advice I received that's still taught today. • How my puppy recalls from play brilliantly because of incremental layers of learning. • Why positive reinforcement is new and revolutionizing centuries of dog training. • How I pioneered positive reinforcement in dog agility training, even when told it would not work. • Why dog training using positive reinforcement is more reliable for recalls and more. • Why consent and cooperation create trust for nail trimming, etc. • The importance of knowing and growing what your dog values in different environments. • How dogs learn to earn reinforcement and how the value transfers to you. • Why teaching dogs "do" works better than teaching "don't." • The truth that you're one good strategy away from a better life with your dog. Ep 195Making Your Mind Your Most Powerful Dog Training Tool #195

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Why would a dog training program work or not work for some people? I had the chance to approach dog training from a place of curiosity on social media recently and learned a lot. There was also a comment that got me thinking about approaches to dog training, especially our mind's approach. How our mind matters for dog training success is the topic of this episode, plus I have some bonus book recommendations and a Wag Nation special enrollment surprise. In the episode you'll hear: • The two types of students guaranteed to get dog training results. • The difference between successful and lackluster training outcomes. • How our intentional mindset determines our outcomes. • About nature vs. nurture and our ability to change at any time. • About fixed vs. growth mindset in relation to your dog. • Why we should challenge labels and fixed mindsets with curiosity. • About noticing how you show up for others when "squeezed" by life. • How to pinpoint what's holding you back from achieving dog training goals. • The characteristics of students who thrive in DogsThat classrooms. • Where to find lessons in failure. • What we can learn from "The 4 Disciplines of Execution". • About the book "Measure What Matters". • That anyone can achieve a growth mindset. • How to get our Wag Nation and Home School the Dog discount bundle. Ep 194The Invisible Reason Your Dog Is Ignoring You #194

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Have you ever watched those of us who have dogs on the same wavelength as us, and we ask them to do something, and they do it immediately? The dogs are excited and engaged, keen to listen, and can't wait for the next thing we ask them to do. Now, you might look at your dog's behavior and think, "that's not possible for me!" but I believe it is possible for you, and I believe the possibility is closer than you may think. In the episode you'll hear: • How having a dog enthused to work with you is easier than you think. • The three possible relationships we have with dogs and why I want harmony. • Why being curious about outcomes creates success. • A reminder that progress is not linear but a journey of peaks and valleys that teach us. • How to create value for yourself in your dog's eyes • Tips for transfer of value with a puppy or rescue dog. • Why playing games creates confidence and joy in your dog. • How the layers of learning stack so your dog can be brilliant and engaged. • That behavior is information about what a dog needs and their communication. • Why giving dogs a choice makes them enthusiastic about engaging with us. • About considering ego or soul in your relationship with your dog. Ep 193Do Different Dogs Really Need Different Dog Training Methods? #193

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Somebody has likely told you that not all dogs can be trained the same way and that different methods are needed for different dogs. Is there truth behind this? I'm covering how different dogs might need different training approaches, but the word philosophy should replace method. Plus, I'm sharing why the dog training philosophy I choose aligns with my heart and an invitation to everyone to consider trying something different. In the episode you'll hear: • How any dog can be trained using kindness, clarity and choice-based games. • Why my philosophy doesn't involve the use of positive punishment. • That the expectations of ourselves should be higher than those we put on our dogs. • The difference between dog training philosophies and dog training techniques. • How my training approach will differ for dogs as individuals. • About the dark history of dog training and its slow evolution. • How my training method was mocked decades ago but is now widely adopted. • My invitation to open-minded dog trainers who use positive punishment. • How confirmation bias subtly influences our worldviews. • Why I choose to train with kindness, choice, clarity, and positive reinforcement. • Different ways I change my training technique based on what a dog needs. Ep 191Get Your Dog To Calm Down With This Common Sense Protocol For Relaxation #191

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Imagine having a way to trigger your dog to relax. Consider the benefits and applications in everyday life like vet visits, the groomers or travel. It's not hypnosis. It's a protocol involving conditioning, capturing and shaping your dog's behavior to create calm in key moments. The ability to cue relaxation is valuable for ALL dogs, not just those who are hyper or anxious. In fact, we all have personal relaxation protocols, and in this episode, I'm sharing what I frequently use for myself and my dogs to settle down. In the episode you'll hear: • Why every dog should have a protocol for relaxation regardless of temperament. • About common triggers for relaxation and ones I use for my dogs. • How to help anxious or over aroused dogs with intentional calming mannerisms. • My breathing technique for triggering the parasympathetic nervous system to counter stress. • How to induce a calm state for dogs step-by-step. • Why we play ItsYerChoice to help dogs relax. • How to positively condition your dog's relaxation trigger. • My capturing technique and tips when dogs are in their "chill zones". • When to begin shaping and adding a calm release word. • How to assess your dog's emotional state with TEMP and an app. • About using a remote feeder to add duration to the chill zone. Ep 190Using Daily Quickies To Fast Track Your Dog Training And Grow Your Dog's Skills #190

Visit us at shapedbydog.com In August 2021, I released a special video about my dog, This!, titled "Normalizing Imperfection in Dog Training", covering our challenges so that everyone with a dog knows that struggling at some point in life together is completely normal. In that video, I encouraged everyone to take daily action to make tomorrow better than today for you and your dog. It doesn't mean blocking out big chunks of time. Dog training with "Daily Quickies" is how I get so much accomplished without having long dog training sessions, and in this episode, I'm covering how easy it can be so that you can put it into action. In the episode you'll hear: • How to intentionally build behaviors in short training sessions aka "Daily Quickies". • That all behavior is either growing or falling to pieces unless we're mindful about reinforcement. • My priorities for training husbandry, manners, life skills and dog sports skills. • That conditioning positive emotional responses for dogs to husbandry is critical. • How Daily Quickies differ from formal training sessions. • Examples of short games to play for loose leash walking. • How splitting behaviors down into quick games contributes to growing skills and confidence. • Why using Daily Quickies helps you become a person who sees what's possible for dogs. Ep 189All The Things That Influence Your Dog's Behavior And What Behavior Tells You #189

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Recently I came across an envelope containing all my report cards from kindergarten through university. Reading over my teachers' comments was an enlightening study of behavior and how I adapted in the face of challenges. I'm sharing what I noticed with you as there's a parallel with dog behavior and why they do the things they do. Behavior can fall into seven distinct categories, and understanding the influence of each category is massively beneficial for us to know what dogs are communicating. In the episode you'll hear: • An overview of my school report cards and what they show about my behavior changing. • How my teachers' observations reflected the adaptations I made due to dyslexia. • Why labels, absolutes and assumptions about a dog can limit their learning. • That dog training is never a linear path, and we are always relationship building. • About the 7 categories of Genetics, Health, Education, Exercise, Sleep, Environment and Nutrition and how each can influence a dog's behavior. • That our dog's behavior is information and gives us great feedback to help them. • Why the question "what else might be true" is vital to ask yourself. • That unconditional love means allowing your dog to communicate through behavior. Ep 188Why You Should Change Your Strategy Rather Than Your Criteria When Dog Training #188

Visit us at shapedbydog.com As a professional dog trainer, I regularly see a lot of people working with their dogs. A common error people make when things don't go well is changing criteria in the middle of training to help their dogs be successful. At first glance, this might make sense, but today we're talking about why it's a huge mistake, where it could lead you, and what you can do instead. In the episode you'll hear: • Why criteria will help your dog and reduce frustration. • The reason changing your strategy is better than changing the goal. • How consistently reinforcing the behavior you want creates clarity. • Why to remember that 'sometimes' is 'anytime' for dogs. • How to create calm confidence and set training up for your dog's success. • About splitting things down to grow correct behaviors without changing criteria. • Examples of changing strategy with weaving and targeting in agility and trick training backing up. Ep 187When To Listen To Your Heart In Dog Training #187

Visit us at shapedbydog.com I've met a lot of people at the crossroads of their dog training and looking to go in a more reinforcement-based direction, but they're worried it won't work due to old beliefs and habits. Unless you were one of the lucky few to learn nothing but reinforcement-based dog training, leaving behind the familiar for something new naturally creates fear and vulnerability, especially when surrounded by so-called 'experts' and naysayers when you encounter challenges. We're covering how to recognize belief loops that could be holding you back. In the episode you'll hear: • That safety for everyone is your first priority in dog training. • Why to choose your experts carefully for your sake and your dog's well-being. • The reasons dog training knowledge should always be growing and evolving. • How belief loops and confirmation bias impact your dog training and decisions. • Why it's not necessary to be your dog's dominant leader. • About protecting yourself from naysayers and uninformed opinions. • Why giving dogs opportunities to earn high value reinforcement creates deep connection. Ep 1862 Types Of Connection With Dogs: Dog Agility And Daily Life Case Studies #186

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Over the years I've asked my students to describe the connection with their dog in different environments. How is it different inside your house versus your front yard? What about the park? Or, around other dogs or children? Often the response describes the emotional connection "to" their dog; not the two-way connection "with" their dog. We're covering what that difference is between the connection to versus connection with our dogs, why it's super important to understand, and how growing one can also grow the other. In the episode you'll hear: • How connection TO a dog differs from connection WITH a dog. • What weakens and strengthens the relationship we have with dogs. • Common words used about dogs that signal a connection crisis. • The reasons understanding and empathy will grow your relationship. • How the sport of dog agility, or any dog sport, is like an amplifier of connection. • Why it's essential to protect your dog's confidence when beginning agility. • How one of my agility students, Jenny, went from overwhelmed to elite competitor with her Siberian Huskies. • The story of Cait's Shiba Inu, Moshi, a pandemic puppy, and how their connection evolved. • That game by game, layer and layer, you can see the connection with your dog blossom. Ep 185I Tried That, It Didn't Work #185

Visit us at shapedbydog.com As a professional dog trainer, I can assure you there are six words that your dog training coach never wants to hear. You might think those words are "but he does it at home," and that's close, but they are actually "tried that and it didn't work". We're covering what's going on with those words for you, your dog, and your coach and how to turn it around. Considering alternative dialogues promotes critical thinking and keeps communications open. In the episode you'll hear: • What to consider when your dog doesn't respond to training methods. • Why anyone can call themselves a professional dog trainer. • What Bob Bailey says about anyone being able to train anything given enough time. • That when you say, "it didn't work," you might be shaping your coach. • A better strategy that you can use to get great feedback. • That none of us know what our dogs are thinking. • Why you want a conversation based on intentionally clear statements and questions. • What tactics help if you are the coach hearing "it doesn't work". • Why dog trainers should consider their role and goal with students. • That we need to be more intentional about the action we are taking. Ep 184Proofing Vs Generalizing In Dog Training To Grow Skills And Confidence #184

Visit us at shapedbydog.com When I first started dog training 30 or so years ago, I was studying the sport of dog obedience because I wanted to compete. We were taught to lure our dog to do what we wanted and then move to the proofing stage. When proofing, we were looking for errors to test how well the dog understood what we'd taught them. And if our dog failed, we were instructed to give them a correction. What if we changed our mindset from proofing to building confidence? We're covering how to help our dogs clearly understand what we want in any location and situation. In the episode you'll hear: • How you can have a well-trained dog without using corrections and intimidation. • What proofing in dog training is and why it can create unrealistic expectations. • About the acquisition and fluency stages of training a dog. • How we can look at any behavior we are training as just one trick. • That fluency will let you know what your dog really understands. • How to generalize behavior, so your dog has the confidence to perform anywhere. • Why generalizing leads to environmental neutrality for dogs. • Bob Bailey's 80% rule and using Jean Donaldson's ""Push, Stick or Drop" to determine that 80%. Ep 183What Does "Train The Dog In Front Of You" Really Mean? #183

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Have you ever been in a dog training situation and felt you are in the wrong place as your dog is not responding like other dogs? Or have you ever thought that your dog is not like other dogs? It could be in a dog training class, a workshop or an online course, and you see other people training and think your dog doesn't compare. You are not alone, and it's why I often say to my students, "train the dog in front of you" and "meet your dog where they're at" so that you and your dog can be a confident team. In the episode you'll hear: • What I witnessed happen to a Jack Russell Terrier in group stays at a dog obedience class. • Why we need to believe what our dogs are telling us. • How to use the 5C Pyramid to protect and grow confidence for you and your dog. • Tips on how to know if a dog is ready for challenge. • That your dog not doing what other dogs do does not make your dog bad or you less of a trainer. • Why our dog's issues are opportunities to grow a deeper connection with them. • How to understand what the dog in front of you needs right now. • What I did with my dog Buzz at agility class when he was young and overexcited. • Why we can set goals, but our dogs set the pace of their training. Ep 182The Game Within The Game: How To Multiply Your Dog's Reinforcements #182

Visit us at shapedbydog.com To the uninitiated, reinforcement based dog training looks as if you have to walk around with a boatload of cookies or else you are not going to get your dog to do what you want. That's just not true. But if you are carrying cookies everywhere, I'm covering how we go about reinforcement based training differently so that you can transfer the value of those cookies to you with games within games. In the episode you'll hear: • What I learned about games in a summer job on a dairy farm. • The definition of primary and secondary reinforcers. • An example of a game-within-a-game to teach a dog to easily line up at your side. • The steps to using a hand target for your dog to line up to your side. • What the Karate Kid has to do with dog training. • How the transfer of value works with games within games. • About a game I played at Chicken Camp with Bob and Marian Bailey. • How the transfer of value from games creates connection, focus and drive. • All the reasons my dogs sit at doors, and it's not about being a control freak. • That all of life is a game-within-a-game creating a deep connection with our dogs. Ep 179Help For Dogs Refusing Treats: Case Study With Training Plan #179

Visit us at shapedbydog.com My dog won't take treats outside! Is that something you've ever said or heard? We're looking at the challenge of a dog refusing treats as a case study, as training will be so much easier if your dog loves food, especially if you are working on things like loose leash walking or helping your dog with reactivity. I've got an outside the box training plan for you to get your dog loving treats no matter where you are. In the episode you'll hear: • The physical reasons a dog might be refusing to take food treats and why to rule them out. • How not taking food could be a habit for a dog and related to their emotional state. • Why reinforcers lose or gain value in different environments. • That getting a bigger meatball is not always the answer. • Why feeding dogs should be an event and what to notice about your dog's weight. • About rating all of the treats that you can give your dog and different foods to try. • The steps for testing treat values in different rooms and times of the day. • About creating positive triggers for your dog that are exciting. • How to transition using treats from indoors to the outdoors incrementally. • What your dog's physiology has to do with treats and how you can change it. • What you need to do before you can start counterconditioning anything. • Why training isn't about work but building deeper bonds with dogs. Ep 178Dog Walking: Why To Start, How Often, And Where #178

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Why is it important to walk your dog daily? Besides the obvious health benefits of exercise, we're looking at the advantages of daily dog walking that many people don't realize. Sometimes people can give a list of reasons not to walk their dog, so we're covering why to start and what defines appropriate exercise for dogs. In the episode you'll hear: • That our dog Tater Salad does not particularly like walking at certain times. • About the health benefits of walking for dogs. • What my friends Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib say about canine exercise. • Why leaving your dog out in the backyard is not exercise. • That dogs benefit from a change of scenery and it can reduce stress and behavior issues. • How taking your dog for a walk presents great training opportunities. • The reason to find opportunities for your dog to go for a run off leash. • About walks being relationship building and special adventure time for you and your dog. • That walks have benefits for us and how I make a habit of gratitude when walking. • What types of dogs should not be walked and what you can do instead. • The common denominator in dogs with long life spans. Ep 177Dog Training Outside The Box: Transfer Of Value Case Study #177

Visit us at shapedbydog.com When we train dogs with layered shaping, we train with out of the box thinking. In this episode, I'm giving a glimpse of what that looks like and how it relates to the transfer of value. It starts with knowing what a dog loves most of all. I'm also covering a case study on how we used the transfer of reinforcement value for a German Shepherd so that they could learn to retrieve without a force fetch. In the episode you'll hear: • What we need our dog to understand about reinforcement and what we need to understand. • A review of the reinforcement process in our dog training. • Why your dog's age, the location you are training, and what you are training matter. • The importance of your placement and delivery of reinforcement. • How we found something that a German Shepherd loved and used it for training. • The process of transferring the value from bubbles to food with a target stick. • Why we need to change a dog's physiology for training. • How ping-ponging reinforcements help with the transfer of value. • That there's not a linear path for all dogs, so we think outside the box. • About our brand new free DoggyFlix video streaming adventure for dog people.
