Today on Sense of Soul Podcast we have, Author & Advocate Marlon Bacote. After three decades of battling addiction, he hit rock bottom and searched for recovery and wellness. He spent a combined total of 23 years in jail and prison for petty larceny charges to support his habit. With co-occurring disorders ranging from depression, PTSD, bipolar, and Substance Use Disorder, he felt he had no way out of a meaningless life. His career path is Chartered Accountancy, where he specialises in Financial Investments. The beginning of his life changed direction after his Dad passed away. Today on Sense of Soul Podcast is Geoff Thompson, he is a film-maker, screenwriter, spiritual teacher, prolific British author and martial arts expert. Geoff is a BAFTA-winning screenwriter, penning multi-award-winning films for luminaries such as Ray Winstone and Orlando Bloom. The prestigious Black Belt Magazine USA polled him as the most influential martial artist in the world since Bruce Lee. Geoff has been featured on many mainstream TV shows and has written articles for national magazines and broadsheets, including The Times, Men’s Fitness, GQ and FHM. He joined me to share his book called, 99 Reasons To Forgive, and Revenge Ain’t One. His journey to understand forgiveness, to let go and let God. Geoff Thompson was sexually abused at the tender age of 11 by a trusted and beloved teacher. By the time he was 30 years old he was unconsciously displacing his rage into violence, sexual self-harm and long bouts of debilitating depression. After failing to find a solution to his burgeoning mania in all the conventional places, he set off on a Campbellian quest to find the answers for himself: about abuse, about the aftermath of abuse, about the true meaning of forgiveness, its metaphysical power, and how it is possible to heal, no matter how deep or how old the wound. He assures us that "there is treasure in the ruins", "there can be profit in sorrow and in suffering", and, with a few tried and tested, honest techniques and a heavy supply of courage, victims can reclaim their lives, they can win love and they can find healing and inspiration, post-abuse. Today on Sense of Soul podcast, I have author Lynne Renoir. She was born into a fundamentalist Christian family where the Bible was the central focus. She was not allowed to make mistakes or to challenge her father’s opinions. Such behavior, in his view, was the work of Satan. As God’s representative in the family, her father believed it was his duty to belt the devil out of his daughter, and he did so regularly and severely. When the beatings continued into her twenties, Lynne finally broke free. Convinced she was a failure as a believer, she left home, and for several decades she endeavored to live by the tenets of the faith in which she had been raised. Then when she was fifty, Lynne had an amazing experience of communication with beings in the spirit world. Under their guidance she completed a Master’s degree in Psychology and a PhD in Philosophy.
