And those who like to talk about possible political solutions to the centralization of power almost never acknowledge that business and economic consolidation leading to national and multi-national corporations is almost as much, if not more, of a problem than the political consolidation of power. If we are to devolve political power, returning it to a more local scale, in a way that does not break society, it must be understood that we must localize economic activity and scale first. Grappling with that hornet’s nest of problems means addressing the question of distributed ownership and the criminal and civil liability of owners for the actions of their business ventures. In the meantime, there has been so much happening in South Africa that it seemed prudent to get this conversation out to you sooner rather than later. I managed to secure the audio for the sermon I posted and gave on Sunday. It ended up being 42 minutes. I think I need to work on shaving my sermon lengths down a little, although the feedback was positive. I think I am going to post it here as an audio only video here and let Substack convert the video into an audio podcast on their app and to send out to place like Apple and Spotify. I am thinking, why should only the meagre YouTube audience get to see the nice video and intros and outros? Since there is no loss in terms of podcast availability and functionality, and some of you said you prefer the video, even if it is only a static pic, so I will just have to get over my fixation on the consistency of my numbers — a “managerial” fixation if there ever was one. Paul Kingsnorth wrote an article for First Things, making an argument against the idea and reality of Christian Civilization. We all took some time to read and digest it, celebrate Christmas and New Years, line up our schedules, so as to have a discussion on this piece. If it were any other author, we might have ignored it and moved on. But, we all respect Paul as writer and a thinker. We appreciated his conversion story as well as his deep dive into the technological problem and modernity. But, as much as it pains us to do this, we had to push back with some force. It was not a great piece and needed a robust response. That is what we did. We have tagged him here in the hopes that this discussion might reach him. We would love to have him on to dialogue on the subject and explore more where he is coming from and see if our critiques engender some re-thinking of his own position.
