115. Bits of Paul: The Case for Beautiful Worship

If you listen in “audio only” format — click the headphone icon to the left of the video to switch — you will not encounter these problems.]I have long time mutual and friend, Bits of Paul, on to talk about something very close to his heart: Christian worship.Paul and I begin our whole discussion of Christian worship and the music we use to worship by discussing the whole genre of “Jesus is my boyfriend” type songs. From there we discuss the divide between low church and high church, which we agree is maybe not the most important distinction. In the end, we both agree that the real problem is the effect of making “accessibility” a primary goal of the worship service as opposed to “meeting God.” We complexify it and try not to give easy answers. I think you will really enjoy this conversation. It was one of my favourites. This is a public episode. 113. Why the NY Stock Exchange Is Bad for Federalism: A Discussion of the Problems of Distributed Ownership

I am joined by Ron Dodson and The Black Horse to talk about a problem that is on the lips of everyone these days on the Online Right: distributed ownership and the problems it creates. Many people talk about renewing federalism in response to the centralized administrative state. And those who like to talk about possible political solutions to the centralization of power almost never acknowledge that business and economic consolidation leading to national and multi-national corporations is almost as much, if not more, of a problem than the political consolidation of power. If we are to devolve political power, returning it to a more local scale, in a way that does not break society, it must be understood that we must localize economic activity and scale first. Grappling with that hornet’s nest of problems means addressing the question of distributed ownership and the criminal and civil liability of owners for the actions of their business ventures. I have Ronald Dodson and The Black Horse on to discuss the subject. This is a public episode. 112. Athenian Stranger: Neo-Paganism

[Note: if you are listening in “video” format, you will discover that at around the 1h20 mark the sound will start cutting in and out. If you listen in “audio only” format — click the headphone icon to the left of the video to switch — you will not encounter these problems.]Athenian Stranger and I get together to discuss the modern origins and interest in pagan revival in Europe during the modern period. We go through a lot of material here and try to approach this from a philosophical and history of scholarship to address the question of where this interest comes from and why it started happening in the modern period. The answers are in some ways more mundane than you might think but also much bigger in scope than many realize. We do not get into the specifics of the content of today’s internet neo-paganism, which is probably the least interesting part of this whole discussion. I have enjoyed reading the Eddas and other primary source materials myself and will do so again in the future. But that is not what this discussion is about. If you have questions, please do ask them in the comments and Athenian and I may do a follow up episode. Also: Athenian mentions the one passage in the New Testament which mentions the word philosophy — φῐλοσοφῐ́ᾱ — and I said it was from 1 Corinthians 1-2. I was mixing up the words “wisdom” and “philosophy.” The actual text is Colossians 2:8 …Βλέπετε μή τις ὑμᾶς ἔσται ὁ συλαγωγῶν διὰ τῆς φιλοσοφίας καὶ κενῆς ἀπάτης, κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, κατὰ τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου καὶ οὐ κατὰ ΧριστόνSee to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. 111. The Floundering Church: Trying to Be Something It Is Not

Many have tried to tackle the question of why the Christian church dwindled in the modern age. One answer is that perhaps it is trying to become "modern," but modernity does modern better. 105. The Archetype of the Hero Past and Present

Prior to writing my recent piece on the “Hero Myth” I bounced some ideas around of the participants in a group chat dedicated to the scholarship of the Greek and Latin classics as well as the “Great Books.” This generated enough pushback and discussion that I thought it might benefit my readers and audience to have a discussion with Stephen and Joe, exploring the content of the Hero Myth and why they feel it has value in today’s context. Because my piece was written before recording, it also allowed me to develop the “Steward” archetype further and how we might present that alternative to a society that is predisposed to the Hero Myth and resistant to the symbol of the Steward. 100. Modern Art: Revealing the Hidden Thing

Everyone likes to hate on modern art. Recently Dimes wrote an interesting piece pushing back on this impulse. Since I have decided to retire the “Christian Ghetto Podcast” and integrate all my audio content under the “Seeking the Hidden Thing” banner, why not mark the occasion by having my 100th audio recording under the “Seeking” name also be my first podcast discussion under the actual name of this Substack. I have invited Dimes and Gio's Content Corner. on to both celebrate the moment and have a discussion on modern art in our present political moment. Maybe it will help you to re-think knee jerk reactions to it and appreciate it in a new light. Maybe it will help you see something you couldn’t otherwise see. Maybe the being of our age will be revealed to you. Here is the piece under discussion: We also discuss a number of specific pieces. I have included images in the video for those that want to follow along that way. In the meantime, there has been so much happening in South Africa that it seemed prudent to get this conversation out to you sooner rather than later. So that means one last episode of the Christian Ghetto Podcast before that moniker is retired. Not to worry, members of the Ghetto will certainly show up in the future, but this will both clean up the branding and hopefully allow a wider group of guests and thus a more diverse collection of conversations. But with my recent hard drive crash, it also meant re-doing all the visuals and the intros and outros as well. Enjoy. This was an informative discussion for me. 96. "God's Will for Your Life"

I managed to secure the audio for the sermon I posted and gave on Sunday. It ended up being 42 minutes. I think I need to work on shaving my sermon lengths down a little, although the feedback was positive. I think I am going to post it here as an audio only video here and let Substack convert the video into an audio podcast on their app and to send out to place like Apple and Spotify. I am thinking, why should only the meagre YouTube audience get to see the nice video and intros and outros? Since there is no loss in terms of podcast availability and functionality, and some of you said you prefer the video, even if it is only a static pic, so I will just have to get over my fixation on the consistency of my numbers — a “managerial” fixation if there ever was one. 31. Dimes -- First Principles

Dimes and I have a meandering and wide ranging conversation about his notion of “first principles.” The idea is, in any community, if you were to boil things down to the one or two things that bind you together, what would they be? These are your “first principles.” I first came across the idea reading his recent piece over at his own Substack, The Vanguardist Journal.Note: I am trying something new, uploading the podcast directly as a video in the hopes that it simplifies the uploading process overall. Because I had to split the video and audio to properly process the audio, I don’t think the StreamYard bubbles are perfectly lined up this time. If you like this format, let me know. I should still be available as a downloadable podcast on this app as well as other platforms. If everything goes right, I should go straight to YouTube.Note: Dimes can be a little earthy with his language. 28. Christian Civilization Is a Good Thing, Actually

Paul Kingsnorth wrote an article for First Things, making an argument against the idea and reality of Christian Civilization. We in the Ghetto thought it merited a response.Fairly shortly after Paul Kingsnorth wrote the following piece:https://firstthings.com/against-christian-civilization/…it engendered a response among the guys in the Ghetto. We all took some time to read and digest it, celebrate Christmas and New Years, line up our schedules, so as to have a discussion on this piece. If it were any other author, we might have ignored it and moved on. But, we all respect Paul as writer and a thinker. We appreciated his conversion story as well as his deep dive into the technological problem and modernity. But, as much as it pains us to do this, we had to push back with some force. It was not a great piece and needed a robust response. That is what we did. We have tagged him here in the hopes that this discussion might reach him. We would love to have him on to dialogue on the subject and explore more where he is coming from and see if our critiques engender some re-thinking of his own position.
