Join us for a case that is told from the unique perspective of someone who was right there, as it unfolded... as it happened - Lian Highet - one of our loyal patreon supporters. Thank you Lian. In the mid 1980's, William Beggs picked up 28-year-old Barry Oldham in a Newcastle nightclub, before taking him back to his flat for sex. But it wasn't just sex that Beggs had an appetite for that night. He had murder in mind. After having sex with Barry Oldham, Beggs murdered him before attempting to cut off his head and legs. He was caught and given a life sentence for this senseless murder, but in a shocking twist, he ended up serving less than two years. In 1989 his conviction was quashed after appeal judges criticised evidence led by the prosecution. But he was back in prison two years later after being convicted of slashing a gay man at his flat. Beggs was released early from his six-year sentence in 1994 for good behaviour and moved to Scotland some time later, but he could not keep a lid on his violent tendencies... Darrell Lance Abbott, best known by his stage name Dimebag Darrell, was an American musician and songwriter. He was the guitarist of the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan, both of which he co-founded alongside his brother Vinnie Paul. His bands were super successful but with an increased profile came an increased risks to his personal safety. On December 8 2004, Damageplan was performing at the Alrosa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, when a deranged fan stormed the stage, shooting Darrell dead. This week's episode takes us back to 24 March 2015. On this day, Germanwings flight 9525 took off from Barcelona Airport with 144 passengers on board, together with four crew and two pilots, bound for Dusseldorf. Half an hour in to the flight, Captain Patrick Sondenheimer left the cockpit to go to the bathroom. His co-pilot, First Officer Andreas Lubitz, locked the cockpit door from the inside, before plunging the plane in to a terrifying ten minute descent. As the plane hurtled towards the ground at 440mph, Captain Sondenheimer screamed at Lubitz to let him back in to the cockpit. When his demands went unanswered, he attacked the cockpit door with an axe in front of screaming passengers, but it was all in vain. Before he could regain control of the plane, Lubitz smashed it in to the side of a mountain, deep in the French Alps, killing everyone on board. Learn more about your ad choices.
