Ep 3211: Geordie JFK, Stadium Perverts, Dark Dalyer, Anna Livia - 31/03/25
The most cinematic moment in world football this weekend happened at Dalymount Park as Moses Dyer hammered in a killer second goal for Galway United to plunge Branno, among many others, into a world of pain. Today he takes us behind the veil of darkness as we try to reckon with Bohemians' 5 defeats in their last 6 games. We also discuss Newcastle's JFK moment, the latest developments in Robbie Keane's chase for the Hungarian championship, and the reaction to a controversial tweet in which somebody claimed to have quite enjoyed their six-week stay in Dublin. Is this a shark-jumping point for Ken's favourite app? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 3210: Crowley's Class, Connacht In Castlebar, Leinster Bite Sharks, Ireland Hammer Italy - 31/03/25
It was a positive weekend for Irish rugby with the women's team getting a near flawless 8 try victory in Italy, Leinster's B / C team taking down Siya Kolisi's star studded Sharks in Durban, Ulster showing further signs of life against the Stormers, and Munster's halfbacks steering them to a win over Connacht. And even Connacht, as bad as they were at times, can feel they got something out of the game with two losing bonus points, a sellout crowd and a small footprint made in GAA territory. We chat to Shane Horgan and Gerry Thornley about the occasion in Castelbar, Connacht's great attack and terrible defence, Jack Crowley's contract situation, Leinster's defiance in Durban ahead of Quins in Croker, and the total transformation in the Irish women's team over the last 12 months.Plus there's "Lunnachts", Murph's Leaving Cert drinks and Munster's trip to ROG country. David And Chantal Sneyd On The Failure Of The Irish Healthcare System To Provide For Their Son - 26/03/25
We have a special edition of the show for you today; we’re putting yesterday’s conversation with David and Chantal Sneyd about their son Dylan, out free to all. There was a phenomenal reaction from our members and we felt this one should be shared as widely as possible. When Dylan was two David and Chantal grew concerned that he hadn't yet started to speak. They spoke to their GP who referred Dylan for further assessment, and so began the Sneyds' long and still ongoing struggle to navigate the Irish healthcare system.Dylan has since been diagnosed with autism, a diagnosis which brought David and Chantal some relief, but it was hard-won: interminable HSE waiting lists meant they eventually had to opt for a private assessment, years after that initial GP visit. David and Chantal joined us in studio to describe what life over the last four years has been like for them, the huge frustration that they and thousands of other families around the country feel in trying to access basic services for their children, and what they think the future holds for Dylan. Ep 3205: The National Fun League, Faltering Dubs, Flynn's Shins, Meeting George Foreman - 24/03/25
Mayo and Kerry both spent time yesterday in the relegation zone, but they’ll spend this week looking ahead to a Division 1 final in Croke Park after a daft last day of the National Football League.Paul Flynn and Conor McManus look at this strange, fun, league campaign in full, with some flowers for newly-promoted Monaghan, and we go down through the divisions in search of possible championship bolters to put up a challenge to a faltering Dublin in Leinster. We also discover the truth behind Paul Flynn’s history with the shin-pad, courtesy of a listener, and Eoin tells us about the time he met the late, great George Foreman. Dan Burn, Eddie Howe, Yasir Al-Rumayyan: they dream the same dream, they want the same thing. At least they all did at Wembley Stadium yesterday evening. As for tomorrow, who can say... Rory Smith of the Athletic joins us to talk about the game. How did Newcastle so comprehensively get the better of the league leaders? And how does the result affect the perception of Liverpool's season, which still looks likely to end with a Premier League title? James Montague, who has a new book coming out next week on Saudi Arabia's takeover of world sport, was also at Wembley to witness Newcastle's day of destiny. We talk about what the victory meant for the Newcastle fans, the commitment of the PIF to further successes with Newcastle, and the rhetoric of human rights in the age of autocracy. Hosted on Acast. Ep 3194: Ireland Caught In Speed Trap, Feeling Bleu, King Louis, Young Sam - 10/03/25
Ireland only had to make four tackles in the opening 18 minutes of this game, and they were ahead against a Dupont-less France early in the second half. But it was a worrying capitulation after that as Galthie's men scored 42 points in a game that will linger long in the memory. We talk to Shane Horgan, Chris Jones of the BBC and Ruaidhrí O'Connor of the Irish Independent about what went wrong after 18 minutes, what they could have done better in those opening 18 minutes, who was at fault for the avalanche of points conceded in the second half, the impact the yellow cards had on the result, King Louis Bielle-Biarrey, Sam Prendergast's mixed performance, the long term implications of the result, and our desperate need for speed. Plus there's permutations man, Ireland's European medal rush, and why France are good for rugby. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 3193: Let Them Eat Fruit - 10/03/25
Anger stalks the land, as discontented fans rebel against owners, against prices, against the way the game is going - but is anybody listening? To answer this question we consider the case of the lesser-spotted Chelsea Football Club, with contributions from co-owner Todd Boehly and coach Enzo Maresca. If this is how things are in ‘real football’ then maybe the Sidemen vs YouTube Allstars, rather than being a portent of Antichrist, is the way of the future?Lars Sivertsen and Rich Jolly join us to talk about the games at Old Trafford and Anfield. What is people’s problem with Bruno Fernandes? On the same theme, why does Martin Odegaard also get it whenever Arsenal have a bad result? And are PSG right to be so confident ahead of tomorrow night’s second leg against Liverpool? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 3188: Inter Fort Lauderdale, Messi: Still Good - 03/03/25
Maybe he picked the wrong week to be away. Last week brought probably the decisive matches of the Premier League and a fight pitting Ian Harte against all the League of Ireland managers. This weekend was the FA Cup, arguments about the quality of balls, a story about a player disrespectfully bringing his dog to training. With the Champions League promising bigger things later in the week, Ken reviews his time in Miami and his trip to the really-quite-far-away Chase Stadium: did the jewel of South Florida live up to Will Smith's billing? We also talk about Manchester United's latest defeat, as is tradition. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 3187: Ireland V France Preview, Munster's New Chief, Felix Returns To SA - 03/03/25

We talk to Gerry Thornley and Shane Horgan about how the three have evolved over the years, their relevance to this game against France, the challenge posed by Dupont and his teammates and why Ringrose is a big loss against this rapid looking French backline.New Zealander Clayton McMillan will be Munster's head coach next season, which is seen as bit of a coup by the IRFU. We look at his background, his achievements with the Chiefs in Super Rugby, his approach to management and why Munster need this one to work.Plus there's Felix Jones' return to South Africa, creating hostages to 6n fortune, and the sound of rowing silence. At 18-10 down and a man down, against a transformed Welsh team, Ireland were heading for one of the great 6N shock losses; but thanks to some pragmatism, some brilliant kicking by Gibson Park and James "air" Lowe, Easterby's side eked out a win in Cardiff to secure the Triple Crown and keep their Grand Slam hopes alive. We chat to Shane Horgan and Andrew Trimble about the nature of the second half recovery, some of the errors that meant they had to come from behind, Ringrose's red, Prendergast's ups and downs, brilliant Bealham and Scotland's missed kicks.Another Sunday afternoon, another GAA golador makes a seasonal re-appearance. 7 days after Michael Murphy's return, David Clifford started his first game under the new rules and got 3-3 to fire Kerry past Tyrone. Ep 3181: Slots Machines, Chasing The GOAT In Vice City, United Take The Soup - 24/02/25
While our Chief Soccer Correspondent is chasing the GOAT in Miami, the rest of the football world continues to roll on, or in the case of the English Premier League the word trundle may be better applied, as Liverpool look to have it wrapped up in February. We have Dion Fanning in the studio and Mark Critchley on the line to look back at a weekend that saw Arsenal slip up, Salah stake a claim for the Ballon d'Or and Manchester United say to their beleaguered staff it’s soup or nothing. We also reflect on the enormous outpouring of love for our chat with Charlie O’Leary on the World Service and reveal whether or not a spliff was offered to us on the DART. Ep 3163: Ireland Work Out England, Crowley Carries It Home, Dan Knee, Maniac On The Floor - 03/02/25
At half time on Saturday a lot was on the line for Ireland as they trailed England 10-5; there was the 2025 6N, the shot at winning an historic three in a row, and there was the fear that a great Irish team was in terminal decline. Second half tries from Bundee, Beirne and Dan Sheehan put some of those issues to bed, and sent Irish fans home happy and glorious. We chat to Ruaidhri O'Connor of the Irish Independent and Tom English of BBC Scotland about how Ireland eventually worked out England's defence, the impact of Jack Crowley, Dan Sheehan's incredible recovery from an ACL rupture, and how the Scots are shaping up ahead of the match in Murrayfield.Plus there's the performance of DJ Mark McCabe, a capella Fields Of Athenry, and Rory's battle with Lowry for prestige, and loads of cash, at Pebble Beach. Episode 3157: Oliver - Evil, Or? Bournemouth Burn Forest, Grenadier Jim - 27/01/25
Michael Oliver tried to plunge another dagger into the heart of Arsenal but his wicked plan backfired as the substitute he caused to be introduced, Riccardo Calafiori, scored the winning goal against Wolves. At least that's one popular narrative of what happened at Molineux on Saturday. We discuss whether Oliver might be the real victim of injustice here. Ruben Amorim has turned 40 and his comments on Marcus Rashford are getting more unpleasant. Is there a strategy here or is Amorim simply getting meaner with age?John Brewin and Rich Jolly join us to talk about the weekend's football. John was at the Vitality Stadium to see Andoni Iraola's Football of the Future. Rich saw Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov make contrasting debuts for Manchester City. Ep 3152: Leinster's Cold Bath, Jack CrWOWley, Munster V ROG, Novak's Gripe - 20/01/25
Jack Crowley gave two brilliant try assists, kicked a touchline conversion, made big tackles, launched counter attacks, caught high kicks, geed up the crowd, and at the very end of Munster's game in Northampton, made a line break that could have secured home advantage for the Champions Cup Round of 16. It wasn't quite enough for Munster, but will it be enough to get him the Ireland 10 jersey? If Leinster wanted to stress test their blitz defence then they had just the man in Finn Russell, who put Bath into a 14-0 lead and later a 21-19 lead, forcing Leinster to go into attack mode. We learned something new about holes in Leinster's defensive system, but also about just how good they can be in attack, when they really need to be. We chat to Shane Horgan and Ruaidhri O'Connor about a weekend of thrills and spills, Munster's trip to La Rochelle, ridiculous Toulouse and the Leinster way.Plus there's Leinster's X problem, heavy metal poison and Novak's gripe with an Aussie tennis broadcaster. Ep 3151: Forget it Jake, it's Darwintown
Sometimes as a manager you have to take the opportunity to do a quick victory lap. On Saturday evening at the G-Tech, Arne Slot felt the time was right. Darwin Nunez in his occasional thrilling moments of success can have that intoxicating effect on people. We also talk about a weekend of heartbreak for Arsenal, hear about Jose Mourinho's latest commercial venture and catch up on FIFA president "Johnny" who has joined the thousands of pilgrims making their way to Washington today to kiss the feet of the god emperor. Mark Critchley and Nick Ames join us to talk about the weekend's football. What is Ruben Amorim hoping to achieve by describing his team as possibly the worst in the history of Manchester United? How is it that Brighton can keep regenerating into new forms with different players and coaches and still maintain such a consistent level? And has the Arsenal board's thinking around Arsenal's squad strength changed in line with Mikel Arteta's shifting rhetoric? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

And who should he be aiming to be? Ep 3146: Leinster Party, "Defence" ROG's War, Munster's Gut Rugby, Permutations-a-plenty - 13/01/25

That's the battle won, but ROG wasn't long reminding us all that the war happens in May.It was an enthralling European Cup encounter in keeping with the previous evening's fare in Thomond Park; do we have our Champions Cup back? Ep 3145: Analysing Arsenal, with Dignity - 11/01/25
"I think the Arsenal team felt that maybe today is not their day." Ruben Amorim's newly resilient Manchester United had their best day so far, knocking Arsenal out of the Cup with ten men. The next question: can they do it in front of their own fans? Miguel Delaney joins us to discuss the situation at Arsenal with appropriate understanding and compassion. As it enters the sixth year, is this Arteta project still on track? Are Arsenal going to do anything in what remains of this transfer window? And who is the currently-down-on-his-luck super-striker whose signing could change everything? Ken has a Big Idea. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 3139: Trent's Descent, Lowe Rides High - 06/01/25
Three weeks ago we hailed the Amad-inspired win at Manchester City as the moment when Ruben Amorim truly became the manager of Manchester United. United promptly lost the next four games in a row. Today we hail another new dawn. Amorim really is getting his feet under the table now...We also talk about the meteoric rise of a Premier League chairman of days gone by, sifting through current social media posts, AI slop and legacy media lies in search of a clear picture of the elusive Rupert Lowe. Dion Fanning and Lars Sivertsen join us to analyse the weekend's football. Ep 3132: Best Of 2024 - A Second Captains Sit-Down With Spider Stacy Of The Pogues - 26/12/24
Back in September, the Second Captains crew flew to London for a live show at the EartH Theatre Hackney. But, as a very special added bonus, we also got to sit down with Pogues legend Spider Stacy at his very own kitchen table which, unsurprisingly, was one of our favourite episodes of the year. With that in mind, today we're making it free for everyone to listen to. Merry Christmas!--With the North London derby just a couple of days away, we decided to take the temperature on the ground with a local Arsenal fan. That fan just so happens to be the legendary Spider Stacy of The Pogues, who invited us into his home to chat about his boyhood club but more importantly, for a beautiful conversation about how he’s dealt with the passing of his dear friend Shane MacGowan, how music has been a balm for his grief, and the amazing life Shane lived.Plus there’s the Spider verdict on Ricey and a brief detour to talk tricolours of the French revolution. Ep 3124: All That Is City Melts Into Air - 16/12/24
Empires: large, unwieldy structures. We’ve seen them crumble, topple and collapse. But have we ever seen one just… evaporate? The latest phase of Manchester City’s shocking dematerialisation was another night of glory for Ruben Amorim, whose brave decisions paid off as Amad seized the day. We also talk about the departures, for now, of Russell Martin and Gary O’Neil from the Premier League stage. Then we’re joined by Mark Critchley and Jamie Hamilton for the What’s The Matter With City section. Are we seeing the weaknesses of a totalising systemic approach in which individual inspiration is discouraged to the point of being forgotten? Hosted on Acast. Plus, we look back on our chat with GAA heavyweights Rian O'Neill, Oisín McConville and Brian Fenton from Liberty Hall. Manchester United's exciting defeat to Nottingham Forest was followed the next morning by the news that star sporting director Dan Ashworth had walked the plank after five months in the job. We reminisce about a spectacular weekend for Sir Big Jim, who got the ball rolling with a "let them eat cake" interview with United We Stand. Who's the Dumb Money now? Barney Ronay and Miguel Delaney join us to talk about the weekend's football. Can Chelsea win the title? Has Ange run out of road at Spurs? Now that Arsenal have the corners sorted what else can they do to improve? And what have they made of the revolving executive door at United? Hosted on Acast. Liverpool Leave Two Behind, Comedy Slot, Legend Tickler, Injuries And Mental Health
It’s been a tough week on the Second Captains World Service if you're an Ireland football fan with the women losing out to Wales and Kelleher letting one sail over his head to allow Newcastle score a late equaliser. We ever so slightly deflate the Kelleher hype balloon, attempt to define what constitutes a Premier league legend and chat to Ireland player Chloe Mustaki about the link between physical and mental health. To listen to our programming throughout the rest of the week, join the Second Captains World Service. There’s no contracts, no hidden fees and shows can be listened to on all good podcast apps, on Spotify or through our website. It’s independent, commercial-free and member-led with feature interviews, breaking news, Ken’s Football Show, The Politics Podcast, The “I’ll Tell You Who Wrote It” Book Club and lots of added extras. You’ll also be supporting the development of our longer-form work, such as our international series’ ‘Where Is George Gibney?’ and Stakeknife. Hosted on Acast. Ep 3113: Gaelic Football 2.0 Greenlighted, Sligo Rising, Pat Kenny On Box Room Boinking - 02/12/24
The 48 enhancements that added up to the biggest change in the 140-year history of Gaelic football sailed through a Special Congress on Saturday, and will profoundly alter the game at club and county level for 2025 and beyond. FRC member Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Paul Flynn tell us why this had to happen, why there's still room left for tweaks, and what it tells us for the GAA's approach to tackling the biggest issues from here on out. We salute Coolera/Strandhill's achievement in winning the Connacht club championship (with particular congratulations for a Second Captains super-friend), and there's even an election-week appearance by the great Pat Kenny. Ep 3112: Two Vast And Trunkless Legs of Stone - 02/12/24
We've seen teams and managers in crisis before, but not this team and not this manager. So nobody can tear their eyes away from the spectacle of Pep Guardiola having apparently no idea how to stop Manchester City's spiral, beyond spouting ancient wisdom-phrases even he does not appear to be actually paying any attention to.Meanwhile some of Guardiola's former charges were helping Chelsea make mincemeat of Aston Villa, while for Ruben Amorim's Manchester United, the tiny frenetic figure of Amad Diallo toppled the Easter Island heads at the heart of Sean Dyche's defence.Lars Sivertsen and Neil Atkinson join us to reflect on an extraordinary match at Anfield. Does Guardiola just not know how to take a compliment? How ? Is Salah's public approach to contract negotiation really "selfish"? And can anyone stop Liverpool now? Hosted on Acast. Ep 3109: Stakeknife With Mark Horgan
After the "Where Is George Gibney?" podcast was released three years ago, people couldn't help asking Mark Horgan what was next. What's next is "Stakeknife", his new BBC Sounds podcast series with Ciarán Cassidy, the first two episodes of which were released last week - and Mark is in studio with us today. In his role for the IRA, Freddie Scappaticci was a notorious enforcer for an internal security unit called the 'nutting squad', where torture and the summary executions of informers were commonplace. But he did all this while he himself was a British Army double agent, code name Stakeknife. And as Mark tells us, "the series is about far more than just one man; it's about the state structures that protected him, the eyes that turned away from his deeds and the families that he left behind."Man City, meanwhile, managed to blow a 3-0 lead at home to Feyenoord, with 15 minutes to go in the Champions League, and their manager appears to be feeling the pressure. And Branno helpfully clarifies some issues arising from yesterday's live show announcement. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
