Spokanes Mild Winter: A Rare Occurrence and Snow Forecast for the Cascades
Spokane experienced an unusually mild winter with no single-digit temperatures from December to February, a rare event that has occurred only eleven times in the past 133 years. The city saw its least snowfall since 2009-2010, with just 14.4 inches. Meanwhile, the East Coast from New England to the Carolinas was hit by heavy snow due to cold Canadian air pushed eastward by high pressure over the West and moist jet stream winds. In December, Spokane received heavy rain instead of snow, leaving mountains short on powder. Now, snow is forecasted for this week, but its expected to be minimal in the city with highs in the forties and fifties. Higher up, the Cascades are expected to receive major dumps, with Stevens Pass and Lookout Pass seeing up to two feet and twelve to eighteen inches, respectively. However, drivers should be prepared with emergency gear, and avalanche risks will rise next weekend as temperatures climb.
