Show Notes

Seattles new City Attorney, Erika Evans, faces a significant backlog of over 5,000 unfiled misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor cases, with the oldest dating back to 2022. The previous office claimed to have reduced the backlog, but Evans count includes all cases without a filing decision. The delay is partly due to switching to a new database, JusticeNexus, midway through last year. The statute of limitations for misdemeanors is one year and for gross misdemeanors, two years. Evans team has cleared about 950 cases, filing charges in 262 and declining 581. A new state bill could help by allowing private labs for blood and breath tests, speeding up DUIs. Evans plans to implement vertical prosecution, where one attorney handles a case from start to finish, to tackle the issue.
