Seattle Firefighters Respond to Natural Gas Leak, Evacuate Neighborhood; No Injuries Reported
Seattle firefighters were called to a natural gas leak at a home in the Leschi neighborhood on Saturday morning. The incident led to the evacuation of several nearby houses in a one-block area. The trouble began with a 911 call just before eleven a.m. near thirtieth Avenue and East Yesler Way. Crews checked gas levels and wind direction before expanding the evacuation from just the single-family home. Residents had to leave quickly, and officials set up barricades to keep everyone out. Police and King County Metro blocked off streets from Martin Luther King Junior Way South at South Jackson Street to thirty-first Avenue South and parts of South Washington Street. Puget Sound Energy workers arrived soon after and fixed the line by around one p.m. Firefighters then gave the all clear for people to return home. No one was hurt in the incident, and the area reopened without any further problems.
