Show Notes

Maritime High School in Washingtons Highline Public Schools, despite operating in a temporary building and falling short of its student target, has made significant strides in training students for maritime careers. The school, which opened nearly five years ago, has seen a diverse student body with nearly one-third of students being girls and almost half non-white. The schools first graduating class of twenty-five students has headed to maritime colleges, universities, or jobs with state ferries. However, the school has faced challenges such as staff turnover and early gaps in math instruction, which it has addressed by adding dedicated classes. This year, the school ended a partnership with Seattle Maritime Academy and switched to a new program with Northwest Maritime to keep everyone on campus, saving nearly one hundred thousand dollars a year. The school is responding to feedback by focusing on sustainable paths to college, work, or further training, and by improving academics and parent input.
