SWOLE IS THE WORD THAT U HEARD okay ladies now let's get in-formation about LIFTING BAYBEEEEEEE.
Today we r chattin' with POWER LIFTER Colleen Tighe (@colleentie) and OLYMPIC WEIGHT LIFTER SHANNON (@no_talent_shan) - they are RADICAL AND BUFF and are here to tell u all of things related to that.
Our cover art for this ep comes from Colleen, who is also an amazing artist!!! Get a shirt with these badass lifters (or any number of other badass images) here: https://www.sluggishwife.com/products
Here are ONE MILLION RESOURCES on how to get into lifting:
From Colleen:
For stuff i talked about, the top FIVE people in the world by their wilks score as ranked now by https://www.openpowerlifting.org/ are women.
The top one is marianna gasparyan @power_mayan on insta who recently broke multiple world records, and not only squatted 4.6x her bodyweight, but 4.6x her competition bodyweight, it is 5lbs heavier than the men’s all-time world record at the same bodyweight.
The second top is stefi cohen @steficohen on insta who is a recommended follow along w stacy burr @bamaburr and cc ingrahm @c.c_ingram.
some other top athletes i'd rec are bonica brown @bubblypowerlifter and jen thompson @jenthompson132, and @janaemarie who was an extremely famous powerlifter who transitioned, and there's a beautiful doc on netflix i recommend called Transformer about her.
i talked about: @womenstrengthcoalition @happyluma and ask a swole woman @swolewoman on insta, whose archive is on hairpin and is now on Self mag and is a great archive for beginners
also rec @decolonizing_fitness and @thatdoc.marcia for disability perspectives and decolonial perspectives
From Shannon:
The philly gym I mentioned that does the monthly free class for LGBTQ+ community is here. the class is called strength in numbers and they do it every first Sunday
The brute strength showdown lol: It’s a YouTube series with 4 female strength athletes from different sports competing against each other. It could be intimidating bc these ppl are like highly skilled in their sports BUT it’s fun to watch 4 extremely strong women trying out each other’s sports
@snatchmagazine is a great insta and online store/zine run by a woman: Highly rec the body image community convo from snatch mag and the other polls in her highlights are great too!! :)
Theme music as always by Brandon Payton Carrillo!
