Scott talks with Trita Parsi about an op-ed he wrote in the New York Times on the Saudi-Iranian agreement to reestablish diplomatic ties. Also, the talks were brokered by the Chinese government. Parsi explains why this is a big deal. They also talk about the news that the Saudis agreed to resume ties with Syria in talks brokered by Russia. Discussed on the show: “The U.S. Is Not an Indispensable Peacemaker” (New York Times) “Saudi Arabia, Syria Close to Resuming Ties in Russia-Brokered Talks” (Wall Street Journal) Trita Parsi is the Executive Vice President of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and the author of Losing an Enemy: Obama, Iran and the Triumph of Diplomacy. 3/17/23 Kit Klarenberg on the Georgia Uprisings and the National Endowment for Democracy
Kit Klarenberg is back to provide some important context for the uprisings in Georgia. They start with the Eastern European country’s transition after the fall of the Soviet Union and the influence that the U.S. has enjoyed there since. Scott and Larison examine some of the frustrating contradictions in Biden’s approach which keep the economic war on the Iranian people in place while making a kinetic war in the region more likely. However, to what Scott says should be the embarrassment of the Administration, the Iranians and Saudis did just agree to reestablish diplomatic ties in talks brokered by Beijing. 1/27/23 Ted Snider on the Missed Opportunities to Avoid War in Ukraine
Ted Snider is back to discuss his recent article for the Libertarian Institute. In it, Snider documents the many chances that were missed to avoid the war in Ukraine and a handful of opportunities to stop the war after Russia invaded. In this interview, Scott and Snider examine that history. They agree that the unnecessary nature of this war makes the present bloodshed that much more tragic. And that the war will probably end with similar conditions to what would have come about through talks and agreements before the war, which renders further fighting to be largely pointless. Discussed on the show: “The Missed Opportunities of the War in Ukraine” (Libertarian Institute) “Time is not on Ukraine’s side” (Washington Post) “The U.S. Approach to Ukraine’s Border War Isn’t Working. Eric Margolis returns to the show to talk about the war in Ukraine. Scott reflects on some of his early interviews with Margolis about Ukraine back in 2014. Just as he had said back then, Margolis sees some disturbing parallels between the modern tension in Eastern Europe and the build-up to World War One. Scott and Margolis talk about the mission creep happening with the West agreeing to send more and more provocative weapons while Russia claims sovereignty over territory it doesn’t even control. 1/27/23 Ted Snider: Were the Minsk Agreements a Lie?
Scott talks with Ted Snider about former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent claim that the Minsk agreements were never meant to bring peace to the Donbas. Merkel said that instead, they were implemented to give Ukraine time to build up its military. Some are doubting whether Merkel’s comments are true, but Snider explains why this is a big deal whether she’s lying or not. Scott and Snider explore the dynamic around the Minsk agreements and examine the crucial years between the 2014 ousting of Yanukovych and the 2022 invasion. 1/19/23 Ara Sanjian Explains the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict
Scott speaks with Ara Sanjian, an Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, about the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This is an excellent interview for listeners unfamiliar with the situation. Scott and Sanjian go over the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict more broadly before focusing on the flare-up over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020 and the state of things today. The conflict also has notable international implications with the Russian government backing Armenia and the Turkish government backing Azerbaijan. Scott and Sanjian explore the international ramifications of this dispute on an already messy world stage. Ara Sanjian is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Armenian Research Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He received his master’s degree in history from Yerevan State University (1991) and PhD in Modern History of the Middle East from the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London in 1996. 1/19/23 Branko Marcetic: Cables Expose Washington’s NATO Expansion Lies
Scott talks with Branko Marcetic about some cables he recently dug up that show U.S. officials and western governments voicing concern about Russia’s reaction to NATO expansion going back to the 1990s. Marcetic’s work adds to the evidence that shatters the argument that anyone connecting NATO expansion to the February invasion is either an amplifier or victim of a Russian disinformation operation. Scott and Marcetic go over what he found and zoom out to examine the broader context. Discussed on the show: “Diplomatic Cables Show Russia Saw NATO Expansion as a Red Line” (ACURA) “Ignoring Gorbachev’s Warnings” (Current Affairs) “‘Now or Never’: The Immediate Origins of Putin’s Preventative War on Ukraine” (Journal of Military and Strategic Studies) Retired General Wesely Clark saying the US cannot let nuclear weapons deter its efforts Branko Marcetic is a writer for Jacobin Magazine, a fellow at In These Times, and host of the 1/200 podcast. 1/13/23 Bjorn Handeen on Using Local Politics to End the Wars
Scott talks with Bjorn Handeen, a long-time listener who is now the Idaho Republican Party Region 1 Chairman. The two talk about Handeen’s efforts to translate his knowledge of American foreign policy into results by focusing on local politicians. Unlike some of the big names in today’s Congress, politicians on the county and state levels are often totally uninformed about international issues, which can make them relatively open-minded if only you’re able to get in their ear. Handeen says you’ll be surprised how much access you’ll get to local legislators if you just start showing up. They talk about when democratic institutions can be an effective tool in the non-interventionist effort. And they also look back and reflect on Scott’s early interviews. Discussed on the show: The Sorrows of Empire by Chalmers Johnson Nemesis by Chalmers Johnson Newspapers.com “Korean War at 69: Truman, Treaties, and the Bricker Amendment” (Antiwar.com) Bjorn Handeen is the Idaho Republican Party Region 1 Chairman representing Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Shoshone and Benewah Counties.
