Harriet Browning examines the resurgence of gold as a strategic traditional asset, sketching its path from the global financial crisis through the pandemic to present day. She notes that for the “first time in decades,” central bank holdings of gold exceed U.S. Treasuries. She adds that these entities, along with pension funds and others that hold a lot of gold, tend to have very long-term outlooks. Harriet thinks institutions are applying some of the same principles they use for gold on digital assets, along with the recognition that blockchain represents a new financial infrastructure.
