Show Notes

Aidan McCullen is the host and founder of the Innovation Show, broadcast globally and on Ireland's national broadcaster, RTE. It's also the only English-speaking show on Finland's Business FM! It boasts such guests as Seth Godin, Rita McGrath and Charles Handy, and boasts Visa founder, Dee Hock, and Bill Gates amongst its listeners. Aidan is the author of the recently published book "Undisruptable: A Mindset of Permanent Reinvention for Individuals, Organisations and Life" with Wiley.

Aidan's work as a change consultant, speaker, facilitator, and workshop leader is based on his direct experience of reinvention in his own life and career. During his time as a professional rugby player, he won over 100 caps playing for Leinster, Toulouse and London Irish, as well as becoming a full Ireland Rugby International.

In his business life he developed the digital eco-system for Communicorp Radio Group, served as Head of Innovation for RTE (Ireland's National broadcaster), worked as an innovation consultant for Global company Katawave, and sits on the board of National Broadband Ireland.

He has also created and delivers a module on Emerging Technology Trends in Dublin's Trinity College Business School, which is ranked 1st in Ireland and in the top 100 globally.

Aidan's mastery of transformation in his own career from professional athlete to becoming one of Ireland's most recognized innovators in digital media has led to him being recognised as a thought leader in business transformation. Aidan believes that you cannot change business models until you change mental models. You cannot change what people do until you change how people think.

Today we discuss:

  • The wonderful Japanese Art of Kintsugi and how it can be applied to our thinking
  • The importance of developing a psyche for scaling and knowing thyself
  • How to exploit assets from the ashes
  • Lessons in innovation from Amazon
  • A word of caution for leaders to avoid the coconut trap as they scale

Quote

"Mistakes as the source of learning as long as they're not repeat mistakes are absolutely essential because when it comes to invention and innovation mistakes are symbiotic with those processes of invention and innovation. You have to make mistakes when you're trying something new. Celebrate them and if you can, I encourage you to create a Kintsugi Wall which is a wall which highlights the things you have tried and didn't work. It might have been timing, you might have been too early to the marketplace, you may have articulated it in the wrong way but if you harness and keep that idea, someone may come along and say, "Do you remember that idea…What if?' And that's Kintsugi thinking."
