State Senator Nabilah Parkes, a Democrat, has made history by announcing her run for Georgia lieutenant governor, becoming the first woman to join the race for the May nineteenth, two thousand twenty-six primaries. Parkes, who is the youngest woman ever elected to the Georgia Senate, is also the first Muslim woman and the first South Asian woman to serve there. On the Republican side, five candidates have qualified so far for the post, which their party has controlled since two thousand eight. Qualifying ends on Friday, March sixth, two thousand twenty-six, with more names expected to enter the race.
