Sandia Crest Trails to Close for Two Years: Forest Service to Thin Vegetation, Fix Paths, and Reduce Wildfire Risk

The popular trails on Sandia Crest and the upper part of New Mexicos Five Thirty-Six will be closed for nearly two years starting April 1st. The Forest Service will block vehicle access past the ten-K Trailhead parking lot, affecting trails like Ellis Trail, Sandia Crest Trail, and Kiwanis Cabin Trail. Crews will thin out overgrown vegetation, repair walking paths, remove dead trees, and demolish the old Crest House gift shop to mitigate wildfire dangers. Hikers planning the seven-mile La Luz Trail will need to switch to the ten-K Trail closer to the summit. The Sandia Tram remains open, but many paths to its north will be off-limits. The closure is due to serious fire risks to key radio towers, which handle emergency communications, cell service, and broadcast radio for the city. The trails are expected to reopen by winter 2027, providing nature a much-needed break while ensuring vital services safety.
