Starting April 1st, the Cibola National Forest will close the Sandia Crest Recreation Area for major upgrades and wildfire risk reduction until fall 2027. Projects include clearing dead trees, thinning vegetation, and replacing the old Crest House cafe with new observation decks and seating. Visitors will face closures on trails and highways due to heavy equipment. The site will receive a full redo with fresh pavement, walkways, and toilets. Funding totals $3.6 million from the Great American Outdoors Act. Plan ahead with other forest spots in the meantime.
