Show Notes
Rudy Acuña, a pioneering historian and activist, has passed away at 93. He established one of the first Chicano Studies programs at California State University Northridge in 1969, which he grew into a full department offering over 170 courses and degrees. Acuñas textbook Occupied America remains a classic in classrooms. Known for his sharp wit and engaging lectures, he challenged injustices against Chicanos, even facing a lawsuit in 1991. Born in LA to Mexican immigrants, Acuña earned degrees from local schools and softened his views on mainstream scholars over time. His influence lives on through scholarships and the thriving department he built.
