Measles Outbreak in New Mexico Jails: Four New Cases Reported, Total Now Five

Health officials in New Mexico are battling a measles outbreak, with four new cases confirmed among federal inmates in southern jails. The outbreak has pushed the states total for the year to five, with two inmates testing positive at Luna County jail, one at Doña Ana County jail, and one at Hidalgo County jail. Another inmate in Hidalgo County was confirmed earlier this week. Last year saw one hundred cases in an outbreak that stretched from February through September, mostly in the southeast part of the state near a West Texas flare-up, plus a handful up in the Santa Fe area. Health officials have not pinpointed any public spots where the virus might have spread and are working closely with the jails on quarantines, isolations, testing, and vaccinations to keep things contained. State experts are urging everyone eligible, especially correctional workers, to get the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine right away to stay protected.
