The story follows Bronte, a young woman who seeks refuge at a rural property after a drunken rant goes viral. She becomes a caretaker for Nell, an elderly woman with dementia, under the supervision of Nell’s daughter, Veda. Veda leads spiritual rebirthing retreats and subscribes to the sovereign citizen movement.
As Bronte navigates her new environment, she uncovers a dark secret from Nell’s past involving her ex-partner Ezra Finn. Ezra was imprisoned for assaulting Nell and her daughter Joanne (Veda). After his release, Ezra disappeared, and Bronte suspects he might be buried on the property.
The situation escalates when the police become involved due to Veda's sovereign citizen activities. Bronte becomes entangled in a siege at Gwendolynne, Veda's property, as tensions rise between the police and Veda’s followers. Amidst the chaos, Bronte must unravel the mystery surrounding Ezra's disappearance and ensure her safety.
