The book tells the story of the Black Prince, a British slave ship that was the subject of a mutiny in 1769 . The book uses the mutiny as a starting point to explore the complex and often contradictory relationships between merchants, sailors, and enslaved people in the Atlantic world.
The book also examines the role of the British state in supporting the slave trade [4] and the ways in which merchants used their wealth and influence to shape the law in their favor.
