The excerpt follows the story of Terena Luca and her brother, Croak, as they hunt for the Shroud of Faybhen. They find the shroud beneath the ruins of Agraboda, a city decimated by a plague centuries ago. Terena and Croak deliver the shroud to Duke Aurora. However, Terena later reveals to Croak that the shroud they gave the Duke is fake. Terena is later accused of murdering Prince Lerek and attempting to assassinate Prince Isher. During her trial, there is an earthquake and she escapes. A god named Melanos reveals that Terena is the Heir. Terena later learns that her sister is Sonah Yahn. King Altos asks Terena to find the fangs of a sea serpent named Bethana. Terena eventually learns that Prince Lerek is still alive and is now the King of Olympus.
