The story follows Jess Winters, a seemingly normal young woman who discovers she is a half-demon. After a life of hiding her true nature, she is thrust into the world of supernaturals and angels when a monstrous Ghoul attacks her town. Jess is then recruited by EXO, a demon-hunting organization, to become a peacekeeper.
As Jess trains to fight demons, she struggles with her own identity and the prejudice she faces from other supernaturals. She also encounters a dangerous enemy, the Necromancer, who seems to have a personal interest in her. With the help of her newfound friends, including the enigmatic Guy Shepherd (a reaper), Jess must learn to control her powers and uncover the secrets of her past before it's too late.
