BYU Womens Basketball Kicks Off WBIT with a Win: Freshman Guard Sydney Benally Shines, Setting Schools Freshman Assists Record
The BYU womens basketball team started the Womens Basketball Invitational Tournament on a high note, defeating Alabama A&M 72-47. Freshman guard Sydney Benally had a standout performance, scoring 18 points with 4 three-pointers and breaking the schools freshman assists record with 139 for the season.
The Cougars dominated the game, leading 12-4 early and outscoring the Bulldogs in every quarter. They controlled the boards, shot nearly 50% from the field, and held Alabama A&M under 30% while scoring 16 fast-break points.
Despite a two-week layoff, the team showed hunger and energy, with Benally contributing 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Seniors Lara Rohkohl and Delaney Gibb, along with guard Olivia Hamlin, also hit double figures in scoring.
The Cougars, ranked 23rd, host Missouri next Monday for a second-round clash, looking forward to another home game and fan support against the SEC foe. Their postseason momentum is strong.
