Ep 260Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 260 Maritime Insurance update with Don Spink Bluewater Insurance
Maritime Insurance This is an interview with Don Spink founder of Blue Water insurance on Maritime Insurance. Over the years I have insured with this company off and on and I always found the service to be great. Ep 259Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 259 Stephen Ladd
The Five-Year Voyage: Exploring Latin American Coasts and Rivers Here is a link to the 5 year Voyage This is from the Amazon description; “From the author of Three Years in a 12-Foot Boat comes an expedition of even grander scope, this time with Ginny, his brave sweetheart. Together they fashion a tiny craft in which they row and sail from Florida to the Caribbean along the coast of Central and South America. Though storm-battered and robbed at knife-point, they ascend the Orinoco River to a remote steam connecting with the Amazon. They descend this to Manaus, then climb another tributary south through Bolivia. After a portage they transit the world’s largest swamp, then float down the Paraguay to Argentina. Returning via other rivers, they pause to have a son. Steve sails homeward alone to safeguard baby George, but shipwrecks in surf. Written with humor and keen observation, this is the honest account of an unprecedented odyssey.”   Want me to go sailing with you? Then contact me! Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 34 Cyclades Pt 1
I want to thank all my listeners for their comments and positive reviews in iTunes. As a result of one of these comments I have put together a 7 hour 6 min. 16 lesson audio course to help students prepare for the American sailing Association Basic Keelboat Certification commonly referred to as the ASA 101 exam. It’s now available at a price of $29.99 the first 30 listeners to this podcast can get a discount of 20% off this price by using the coupon code mentioned in this recording. If you’re interested in learning more about these lessons here is the link. https://www.medsailor.com/sailing-learn-to-sail-lessons/ In this episode I cover part one of the Cyclades the islands of Kia, Kithnos and Serifos. The Cyclades chain is a large area and I do not recommend beginning charterers start out here the the weather patterns in the summer can be quite challenging. But I do suggest that if you choose to charter here choosing charter basis far south in the islands as possible knowing that during your charter. You’ll be working your way north and should the dreaded Meltimi start to blow you know it’s a sleigh ride home. I am debating putting together a trip sometime this winter and interested in finding out if there is a demand for my listening audience to join me on a sailing charter vacation somewhere warm, and Justin beginnings exploration stages of this idea and I’m thinking of New Zealand, French Polynesia, or Thailand. If you would have any interest in joining me on such a trip let me know your interest and your budget. If there’s not enough interest I’ll just drop the idea. If you would like to contact me please use the contact form at the website I am always looking for new people to interview and material to add to the podcast.

REWIND: Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 31 Ionian Islands Greece
In this episode I discuss sailing in the Ionian islands. The Ionian islands are the islands off the west coast of Greece. It is a very popular chartering area because of the predictable weather patterns, relatively flat seas, and diversity of anchorages and villages to visit. While this used to be one of my favorite places to sail in Greece the massive expansion of the charter fleets in this area have detracted significantly from its appeal. While this is a great place to take a new sailor or a family for a relatively safe chartering vacation you will have to put up with crowded anchorages, overpriced restaurants, and some lack of charm due to this massive tourist development.

REWIND: Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 22
Comments on Maxwell Windlass, healthcare while sailing and other thoughts. Also I’ve been asked to speak at a winter sailing series of lectures at Bonneville School of Sailing and I look forward to that later this winter. If you’d like me to speak in front of your group drop me a note, if it’s possible I will try to do it.

REWIND: Sailing In The Mediterranean Episode 17, Sardinia
In this podcast I talk about the summer of 1999 where I continued my journey through the Mediterranean by launching my boat in Santa Pola Spain sailing through the Balearics to Ibiza Mallorca Minorca over to Corsica and Sardinia then across to Italy making a stop at the delightful island of Ponza. Let’s talk about putting together a group of people to buy a canal barge somewhere in Europe so that we can sail the French German and Dutch canals. If interested drop me an e-mail I am just in the planning stages right now but it’s something I want to do in the next two or three years. Last weekend I took a trip to southern Utah to the town of St. George we were hiking in Snow Canyon State Park and I took a few photographs to share with you. REWIND: Sailing In the Mediterranean Episode 16, French Canal Cruise
This is a great interview that I had with Jules who I met in Croatia in 2011. Jules and his wife Vanessa spent four months sailing through the French canals into the Mediterranean. We talked about his trips through the French canals. He gives us some great pointers and what is needed to qualify for sailing your boat through the French canals as well as some design constraints for those wishing to travel the French canals to the Mediterranean. I learned that my boat is not going to be the ideal boat to travel through the French canals it needs to be a shallow draft boat. Jules boat has a center board which can be lowered and raised at which makes it ideal for both cruising the French canals and sailing in the Mediterranean. We then continue the interview by talking about his 5 years of sailing in the Mediterranean. If you want to get Jule full story of his sail through the canals right away here is the link: Pluto’s Travels Through the French Canals This is a photo that Jules sent me of us tied up together where we met in Mljet, Croatia Jules is allowing me to post various chapters of his adventure on my site the first posting is https://www.medsailor.com/canal_cruises/

Rewind: Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 15, Sailing in Spain
In this episode I discussed the first year of my travels in the Mediterranean covering from where my crew left me in Lagos Portugal across to the river that took me up to Seville Spain then down the coast of Spain and in through the Straits of Gibraltar. I spent a week in Gibraltar putting on the new roller furling gear and then we worked our way up the coast with particularly wonderful episode that occurred in the little town of Estepona. We will be adding a new menu item on Jules Dussek trip through the French canals. Also I’ve started posting some of the chapters for my book on bareboat yacht chartering in Turkey.

Rewind: Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 8 my story
This is the story of how I went from being a dreamer of being a sailor as a child in landlocked Utah to realizing my dream and becoming a sailor with my boat in the Mediterranean.

Ep 248Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 248 Kivanc and Danielle of See Bee Sailing
I have a great interview with Kivanc and Danielle of See Bee Sailing Kivanc and Danielle Aslaner from the Bay Area California, who just bought their dream boat in Croatia, quit their jobs and are about to live full-time on their boat and start sailing the world. Kivanc is originally from Istanbul and had an interest in sailing and the nautical lifestyle from a young age. While he was growing up in Turkey, sailing was a sport mostly for those well off and seemed inaccessible. His time and attention were also focused on other things such as finishing his education. Fast forward 10 years later to California where he discovered the benefits of belonging to a sailing club. OCSC (Olympic Circle Sailing Club) in the Bay Area opened up the world of sailing in an affordable way, while offering courses taught by top-notch sailing instructors. After Kivanc received a number of sailing certifications, Danielle decided to take a crew class so she could be of more help to Kivanc on the sailboats they chartered in the club and understand the sailing nomenclature better. After the crew class, things started to click with Danielle around understanding basic sailing principles and how things functioned on the boat. Within one year, Danielle jumped all in and completed nearly all the sailing courses offered by the club, including Coastal Passage Navigation. She even started a woman’s only sail group with another sailing pal from OCSC. Over the years as Kivanc and Danielle grew into their sailing hobby their priorities shifted. Both had established careers in high-tech but they craved something more out of life. After doing a number of destination charters around the world, they developed a taste of what it would be like to liveaboard a sailboat. The decision was made 6 years ago to start saving for a sailboat and take a 2-3 years sabbatical from work to experience living aboard and exploring part of the world while sailing. The plan was to start in early 2020 but then the Covid pandemic hit and they were stuck at home an extra year. Danielle even quit her job right beforehand. Instead of being down about this unexpected delay, a lot of soul searching happened and they made the decision to go “all in” with their sailing adventure when they could eventually depart from America. Instead of the original 2-3 year plan, they now have no plans to return to America and will keep sailing as long as it’s enjoyable and as long as the money lasts. Kivanc and Danielle bought their dream boat a 45’ Elan Impression in Croatia at the beginning of 2020, right before the pandemic. They named her Sea Bee a combination of their two shared hobbies – beekeeping and sailing. She has been patiently waiting in a marina for their return – which is about to happen at the end of April, 2021. Kivanc, Danielle and I talked about their adventures in buying a boat in Croatia to go cruising with. Kivanc goes into great detail about this in his YouTube video which is below: https://youtu.be/aZc5kjFyybo If you have suggestions for future episodes please write me a note. franz1 at medsailor dot com Please Consider supporting the podcast in Patreon Want me to go sailing with you? Ep 245Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 245 Chris Axelson pt. 5
This episode is part 5 of of the ongoing story with Chris Axelson Chris Axelson and his family decided to take the plunge and go sailing in the: treacherous Covid Plandemic waters of 2020. Against all odds he is able to live the dream this year when the rest of us are sitting stuck in our homes because of this Plandemic Covid crisis. Chris and his family Homestake Lodge a Ski Touring Lodge in Montana here is a link to his webpage http://www.homestakelodge.com/about/ About Homestake Lodge A history of our lodge Chris and I bought the property in August of 2007 and began rough work on the ski trails. We lived in a camping tent until the middle of October when we got our Yurt put together and assembled. We thought we were living the good life when we moved into the yurt. We planned to run the ski operations out of the yurt during our first winter, and try to get as many trails established as possible. We worked sun up to sun down cutting trails, mowing, stumping, etc. Christmas Eve we moved into our cabin, and got the yurt set up for the ski season and our customers. We were officially open for business. January of 2008 we started construction on the lodge which was completed by November of that year. This allowed us to the run the ski business out of the lodge for the 2009/2010 season, and we picked up the yurt on a trailer and moved it out to the meadow to get ready for a ski-in/ski-out overnight destination for guests. The yurt has been our most popular overnight accommodation so far. Guests enjoy skiing out and pulling their gear in a sled, firing up the wood stove to keep them warm, and the coziness of a yurt with 2 sets of bunk beds, a futon, and a small kitchenette. The last few years we have worked diligently to add more ski trails and improve the ones we already have in place. Chris and I have cut about 70% of the trails ourselves, and the remaining 30% were established roads or trails already in place when we bought the property. When we bought the property, no buildings existed. We added a lodge, barn, cabin, house, and yurt. Our future plans in expanding include waiting to see which overnight accommodations are most popular and either build 1 or 2 more cabins or yurts. We have a snowmaking system which has been a great success. It is a small system, but it allows us to pump water from our pond below the lodge and get an early snow pack on our learn-to-ski area. This sets it up for the season in great shape. Life at Homestake Lodge is wonderful and peaceful and full of constant work that we enjoy. We have to force ourselves to take time off once in awhile because there is a never ending list of projects to be done. We love every bit of it-even the shoveling of cow patty’s off the trail once the cattle leave for the season! Our lodge is completely off-the-grid. We rely completely on our solar PV panels for electricity and solar hot water panels and wood stoves for our heat. See more on that below. Sustainability One of our major goals in the design and operation of Homestake Lodge was to minimize our carbon footprint. For us, “going green” and living “off grid” was a new concept. We had to do a lot of our own research as well as talking with people that know this industry. Electricity and Heat Homestake Lodge now has a grid-tied solar power system (summer 2014). What you read below is more like history. The electricity here at the lodge comes from the power system in the barn. The photovoltaic (PV) panels are on the roof of the barn and supply electricity to the barn, cabin, and lodge. There are 36 panels on the roof and almost the same amount of batteries to store the electricity. If we don’t get enough sun or use up all our stores in the batteries, the generator comes on. The generator has a 30kwh capacity, which is much more than we need right now. In the lodge, we heat with many different things. We have eight large solar hot water panels on the south side of the lodge. This is our primary heat source for our radiant floor heating as well as domestic hot water. The basement has radiant floor heating in the slab of concrete. It makes the bathrooms and showers and wax room area much more cozy and warm. The great room has a wood stove which puts out enough heat for that area. Each bunk room has fin tubes whose heat comes from the solar hot water tank. All of this is backed up by a wood gasification boiler which sits down in the wax room. In December and January, we had it running almost 24/7, when there isn’t enough sun to heat the solar panels. In November, February, and March, we run it primarily at night or not at all if the sun produces enough heat during the day to keep all the thermostats and hot water tank up to temperature. The rest of the months we do not the run the boiler at all. All of that has kept the lodge warm when it has been -30 degrees. So, we have been very happy with that. Tweeking will be a constant part of that process over the years I

Ep 240Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 240 Nicholas Van Antwerp Atlantic Crossing
This is the email that lead to this interview. If you have suggestions then let me know. Franz, I Greatly enjoy your podcast, and I want to thank you for all the time you have put in to aggregate all this information about sailing around the globe. I love putting on old podcasts and following the journeys around whether it’s in the Fjords of Sweden or the Gulf of Corinth. I am a lifelong sailor and was looking forward to hearing you speak at my home yacht club this spring, Columbia Yacht Club., obviously we are living in a different world now then when those plans were made. If you are looking for submissions for future podcast guests I have a transatlantic story to share. The trip was extremely formative and gave me a lot of perspective on sailing. The crossing was not smooth due to poor planning, unrealistic expectations under provisioning, substance abuse, we ran through our sail inventory blowing through spinnakers and disabling our jib foil. We spent time in Gran Canaria outfitting a J122 and preparing it for the crossing. I can speak to what goes into the trip, what day to day life looked like on our 18 day passage and how our crew of sailors of various backgrounds delivered the boat across the Atlantic. It was my most intense 3 weeks of sailing I have done and would be happy to speak to all of it , a narrow aspect of the experience or anything in between. —————– If you would like to support the Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Podcast there are several ways! 1 Become a Patreon 2 Become a Sponsor 3 Buy my Sailing Audio lessons Past Podcasts may now be found HERE If you have ideas for future podcasts or comments please drop me a note! and PLEASE rate my podcast in iTunes and perhaps write a note. Ep 239Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 239 Erin Carey Sailing Publicist
Interview with Erin Carey sailing publicist! “Roam Generation is a public relations agency specialising in traditional PR for adventurers, travel brands and experts, and mission-driven organisations. We help you stand out in the crowd, so you can continue to live a life less ordinary.” Erin Carey is the founder of Roam Generation, a PR and communications agency focused on helping adventurers, travel brands and experts and inspiring mission-driven organisations, share their unique and inspiring story with the world. Erin has 15 years of communications experience in the corporate environment and has interviewed in excess of 1000 people throughout her career. She has an inquisitive nature and loves to ask the big questions, to get to the real heart of the story. Roam Generation came about while Erin and her family were living on a yacht and sailing the world’s oceans. However, they weren’t sailors when they came up with the idea of leaving the rat race and sailing away. Without letting that minor detail get in the way, Erin and her husband bought a yacht on the opposite side of the world and went on to cross the Atlantic Ocean a mere 18 months later. It was on that journey that she met the most inspiring and incredible people, people that she knew she had to help. Roam Generation was developed to support the adventurers, the inspirers, the dreamer and the doers to continue their lifestyle of freedom and adventure. By sharing her client’s stories through PR and social media, together they are able to inspire more people to step out of their comfort zone and live a life less ordinary. “ https://www.roamgeneration.com/ Thanks Franz, great chat this morning. Ep 235Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 235 Kevin and Jaci
Travels of Jaci and Kevin Jacioutthere I received this delightful Email from Jaci and Kevin so how could I resist getting them on the podcast?: “Hello Franz Firstly I want to say thank you and I am really excited about finding you by accident on podcasts. We are currently day 13 into a Mediterranean crossing originating in Croatia down south with the actual crossing from Greece and we are heading to Spain and have survived a Medicane en route. My partner Kevin gets sea sick so on the journey to pass time I found your podcast interviewing Chris and his covid Croatia journey which is very similar to the start of ours. So on the long days, it’s perfect to have discovered something that not only has captured our attention but is knowledgeable 😀. The heading to Spain is to spend winter as part of our new life as live a-boards which started in Covid. If you are interested in my story I have written a few blogs of our unique adventure so far, mostly for family, friends and others I try to inspire with our journey from corporate to nomad. https://jacioutthere.wixsite.com/home Great work and thank you, we are about to listen to Nathan. Kind regards Jaci We are Kevin and Jaci from Cape Town South Africa. We belong to the category Global Nomads and currently reside on a catamaran between Spain and Croatia to follow our dream. With much angst and sacrifice we took the chance and quit our corporate jobs in order to make adventure our life and become liveaboards in the Mediterranean. The desire is to learn more about life, absorb new cultures and gain and give inspiration along the way. In doing so we hope that we are able to show people by example that our new lives could encourage them to believe that they too can follow their dreams. My motto is and boy has it come back to bite me multiple times : If your dreams do not scare you they are not big enough Timeline 2009 was the first time in Croatia and 5 times subsequently when we have sailed Croatia and realized that we wanted to live in the wonderful country. 2 September 2018 – MTB trip in Slovenia – the desire to move to Europe become too great to ignore 18 may 2019 – obtain skipper qualification for sailing in EU 26 June 2019 – offer is made after much research on a 2015 Lagoon39 9 Dec 2019 – Lagoon39 renamed GypsyDjango officially becomes ours 26 Jan 2020 – welcome to Barcelona and a big culture shock 13 March 2020 – Spanish residency card collection- officially allowed in EU 😀 14 March 2020 – covid lockdown 😂 3 June 2020 – life gets interesting with an attempted crossing and rejection on ferry to Italy 4 June 2020 – re attempt and overnight ferry to a Italy and 1st tourists in empty Rome after border opening 9 June 2020 – overnight in dining saloon of freight ferry to zadar from Ancona with special permission by director of border police as boat owners to enter Croatia 10 June hitch hike lift with locals to split 5 September 2020 – 3 months almost over and time to exit Croatia to begin Mediterranean Crossing to Spain via a quick tour of Montenegro 15 September 2020 – bypassing Albania due to covid – hello to Greece with aim to discover Ionians and leave via Zakynthos 17 September 2020 – worst 38 hours of our lives surviving the Medicane on Lefkada which was not forecast to be hit and the wise decision we made to hide in the perfect bay and delay kefalonia. 23 September- off to Italy we go during yet another storm but needing to move because of winter season approaching 27 September- while not allowed off boat (covid and Greece) and hiding out in Reggio during another storm we took the opportunity to sail the 4.4 currents of the Messina Strait in 29knot winds to head to Sicily, a detour because of the weather conditions from original aim of Lipari and Ustica. 2 October- hugging the coastline heading west in westerly winds we finally got to the northwest tip of Sicily and crossed to Sardegna 3 October- yet another detour due to 4m swell and currents with 30knot winds and a speed of 11.9 achieved on fully reefed main we arrived at Sardegna on the east coast. Still not officially in Italy. 8 October- time to cross to Menorca – still keeping in mind the aim to get to Barcelona before winter weather. No where to check in officially to Spain on the Island. 22 October- we have forgotten about future bad weather and fallen in love with this special Island 23 October- final leg of the crossing to Barcelona In Covid 2020 we have sailed 2297 NM over 500 hours and been in 5 countries 😊 which has been interesting. We are South Africans with Spanish Residency on an American boat which makes life even more interesting. We will be making this crossing annually.” ———– If you would like to support the Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Podcast there are several ways! 1 Become a Patreon 2 Become a Sponsor 3 Buy my Sailing Audio lessons Past Podca

Ep 230Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 234 Chris Axelson pt. 4
This episode is part 4 of of the ongoing story with Chris Axelson Chris Axelson and his family decided to take the plunge and go sailing in the: treacherous Covid Plandemic waters of 2020.

Tweeking will be a constant part of that process over the years I&#

Ep 229Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 229 Chris Axelson pt. 1
This episode is part 1 of a 2 part interview with Chris Axelson Chris Axelson and his family decided to take the plunge and go sailing in the: treacherous Covid Plandemic waters of 2020. In Memory of Larry Pardey
Larry Pardey This week I heard about the passing of Larry Pardey and I wanted to share some of my thoughts about his effect on my life. Here is a link to the New York Times obituary Larry and Lynn Pardey have had a direct impact on my life and he will be missed. I’m glad that Lynn is still in good health and actively involved in the sailing community. Below is a link to a YouTube video of the self steering wind vane which Larry designed and I copied and used my boat https://youtu.be/IP9ppE7F8WQ

Ep 227Valeriia Sulima
This week I I deviate away from cruising sailing to delve into the world of commercial shipping with a discussion with Valeriia Sulima Before the interview Valeriia a shared this information with me: “Bullet points as promised about myself: – I was born in the industrial city of eastern part of Ukraine called Dnepropetrovsk. As you can see I didn’t follow the career path of a lawyer. – My first acquaintance with the shipping started with the favourite book of my father called “Two Captains” written by Veniamin Kaverin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Captains) and continued with numerous internships in London. – I came to Hamburg in 2014 for the internship at the Tribunal of the Law of the Sea. – 2015 started to work for the exclusive agent of the Portuguese Registry (Madeira) called European Mar GmbH. Last position Sales Representative. – Aug 2019 joined a startup called Closelink (platform for purchasing marine lubricants, matching suppliers with shipowners) as Business Development Manager for Mediterranean and Russian speaking countries. – In 2019 became a president of Youngship Hamburg, an NGO dedicated to building networks and sharing knowledge among young maritime professionals (https://www.linkedin.com/company/youngship-hamburg). – Aug 2020 working in a business development team of a German marine insurance broker – Döhle Assekuranzkontor. My responsibilities involve expansion of the customer portfolio and creation of social media marketing strategy. – About me: Ballroom dancer (winner of the World Championship in Beijing in 2010), marathon runner (Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris in 2017, 42.195 km), fine art auction’s alumnus (Christie’s Art Business School in 2019), street art hunter and podcasts lover.”   If you would like to support the Podcast there are several ways! Ep 224Episode 224 Sailing in the Mediterranean Andrew Cully of Classic Yacht Info .com
Andrew Cully of classic yachts info.com This week I have a great discussion with Andrew Cully of classic yachts info.com. Andrew and I both share a passion for classic wooden boats and Andrew decided to create a website dedicated to his passion. http://classicyachtinfo.com/ Check out his website I’m sure you will enjoy it like I did and if you have any classic boats for sale make sure you list them on his site this is what he wrote me after we did the interview/ “With regards to the description for the podcast I imagine you will put something together. I can help if you like. The only thing I didn’t really stress is that the boats for sale page is not just for yachtbrokers to put up their listings but also for private owners of classic yachts. They can miss out the broker and gain exposure from the site and from the social media options for only a small listing cost.”     Always welcome classic yacht stories, pictures and information… … and those who want to promote their own classic yacht companies by way of an article are also welcome.

Dylan Magaster part 2   I received this email from Dylan, so how could I resist the interview invitation! Hello, My name is Dylan Magaster and I am the creator of the successful YouTube channel FLORB with 600k subscribers and over 100M views (www.youtube.com/dylanmagaster). I believe if you were to bring me as a guest to your podcast we could create an episode that would provide a lot of value and entertainment to your listeners. I started a career in YouTube at the age of 21 years old with a backpack and $1,000. After 6 months in South America I converted a van in order to begin my travels in North America. About 2 years ago I moved to the Mediterranean and bought a sailboat with only 7 days of sailing experience. I have since sailed from Spain to Croatia, all the way into the Black Sea and all the way down to Tunisia, where I am currently living aboard on my 1939 Morgan 382 sailing boat, The Arianrhod, until the borders reopen. My life choices and professional journey have been called anything from risky to unconventional but FLORB is now a full-fledged, reputable film production company based in Los Angeles, California. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! Dylan Dylan Magaster flew to South America at the age of 21 with only $1,000 in the bank and his camera gear. He backpacked for 6 months, converted a van, and began creating influential short documentaries showcasing Alternative Living.
