Samuel George London - Ep#21
This month we bring you a chat with comic book author and fellow podcaster Samuel George London. We met Sam at True Believers (2020) and invested in his Milford Green comic books. It's amazing that Sam had never even written a major fictional story until he wrote Milford Green. He did so with the help of a structure laid out by Dan Harmon called the Story Circle and drawn by ace Finnish artist Mikael Hankonen. Sam talks about his experience with Kickstarter, how he found Mikael, delivering the final part of Milford Green, his love of a Museum in Baisingstoke and his upcoming projects which we are looking forward to. On top of that, we make up a wonderful story that we are sure Marvel will be all over if they have any sense. Arthole - Ep#20
Another month is upon us and we are still in lockdown, we hope you are all well. This episode was recorded at the beginning of March. Elliot and Kay collectively known as Arthole joined us after a full day at the Bristol art fair Shake. We fed them and plied them with tea to find out more about their own art fair, style, interests, influences and whatnot. Of course, we also made them roll some dice and invent something on the spot and they did not let us down. How Kay managed to draw a whole page of a comic in such a short space of time is beyond us. Do yourself a favour and go check out their social media to find out when the magazine will be released. Or become part of the elite Arthole Isolation Club and buy yourself a swanky t-shirt. You will be helping to support the magazine and two lovely young artists at the same time. Matt Emeny - Ep#19
EWelcome to our April episode where most of the world seems to be in some sort of lockdown (including the UK). We hope that you are well and employing some sort of social distancing. We had this interview with Matt Emeny already recorded and obviously, we want to bring it to you so that you can check out his work. Matt makes his own theatre productions, acts and would love to direct his own movies. Chris has been working with Matt for the past few months as part of the theatre training that Matt provides with The Natural Theatre Company on some devised theatre. Matt's work in ranges from fun children's theatre the Father Christmas Workshop (2019) to the more Back Page that explores human trafficking in the West Country. Matt talks about the challenges and stereotypes that are associated with Dyslexia. He has certainly found ways to dispel them and make his condition work for him to be a more natural performer. CB - Ep#18
We took a trip in early Feb to Cheltenham to check out True Believers Comic Festival. There we caught up with a multi-talented creative CB. We first bumped into CB at Cardiff comic con and we were compelled to have them on the Podcast as soon as we could. It took a while to set up but we got there in the end. CB has produced two awesome comics; ThirteeN, the adult erotic demon zine about a former witch who is thrown into a life of servitude in the fiery pits of the underworld and Avery Chase a Sci-fi action-adventure extravaganza. CB also draws awesome illustrations some of which are more sensual than others. We hope that you take some time to check out their work and spread the word. Jamie Iles - Ep#17
Welcome to Episode 17 where we talk to storyboard artist Jamie Iles. If the surname sounds a little familiar it's because we spoke to his wife almost 1 year ago Sophie Iles. It was so nice to finally sit down with Jamie and have a chat about his work. We feel that storyboard artists are a very under-appreciated breed of people, they can add so much to a project. Jamie talks about his love of story and how him and Sophie are very different in how they try to tell stories and many other things. We really enjoyed chatting to Jamie and we hope that you enjoy listening to him. If your listening to this on the day it's released then images will be released later as we are very busy with "work". 2019 in review and plans for 2020 - Ep#16
Happy new year from both of us. We had recorded a whole episode with the amazing Katy Shutte but due to technical difficulties, we don't have any of that audio. We will say that if you have the chance to check out any of Katy's work then please do so. We would like to also thank the Bristol Improv Theatre for giving us space and time to record with Katy. We will fix the technical issues and have a back up for this year. So this episode is just a bit of a look back on our first year of podcasting and a look into the future. We cover some listening stats, Chris sets a challenge to our listeners with a mystery prize, we talk about the fantastic book How To Think When You Draw by The Etherington Brothers (sorry for the mis-pronounciation of your name) and the fabulous art by Chris Barker. We fill you in on the ongoing work by our first podcast guest Sophie Iles who has had a busy year despite having some horrible things happen in her personal life. We hope to talk to more amazing talents this throughout 2020. Thanks for listening and if you could one thing for us and just tell someone about this podcast we would greatly appreciate it. Contact Us We encourage you to send us your drawings and get in touch via our website or e-mail. We release all of our drawings and will also chat to you on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. Dan Emmerson - Ep#15
Welcome to probably the last episode for the year where we chat to the multi-talented Dan Emmerson. First a quick advert for our recording space which was donated to us by Desklodge. Desklodge is a hotdesk and office rental space that have two locations in Bristol and one in Basingstoke. You can pay by the hour for just £3 per hour and £20 (ex. VAT) for a whole day. For more pricing take a look at the Desklodge website or give them a call. New members get 2 free days! Dan is a multi-talented creative who has worked with digital 2D, 3D as well as illustration and even programming. He's a really nice person and terribly busy with a project that he could not talk about due to an NDA. We talk about his university experience, the tools he uses, his Fleshy Friends project and a brief touch on D&D before we all get drawing. Jamie Frew - Nov Bonus Episode
bonusWelcome to our first bonus episode where we talk to Jamie Frew who is the designer of a card game called The Old Hellfire Club. We were supposed to have a full episode with Jamie and did chat to him for over an hour but due to an operator error we only actually recorded the second half of the chat. We didn't want our listeners to miss out on what we did manage to record so we decided to release it anyway. We give you a bit of an extended intro as to how we found out about The Old Hellfire Club at UK Games Expo back in 2018. It took us a while to manage to organise a chat with Jamie but we caught up with him in London attending Tabletop Gaming Live. Apologies for the sound quality but we did record this inside Alexandra Palace. Sarah Millman - Ep#14 - Part 2
Welcome to part two of our bumper 14th episode for November with Sarah Millman. If you have not already listened to Part 1 of this then we would advise you to go and do that. In this section we get Sarah rolling a whole bunch of dice in which she gets what is known in D&D as a critical fail! Nothing is a critical fail in our book, not even Chris's poorly drawn horselike creature. From this chaos comes a beautiful fantasy scene involving castles, princesses and a deep conspiracy. You can see all of the drawings via our social media links below. Remember to check out NPC Tea, you can grab a copy from Sarah's Etsy page and catch her at ComiXology 205 during Thought Bubble 2019. Sarah Millman - Ep#14 - Part 1
Welcome to part one our bumper 14th episode for November with Sarah Millman. Sarah is a writer and artist that we found at Cardiff MCM. It was because her comic involved tea which Chris drinks a lot of and because our initial chat with her just felt so natural we really wanted to get her in for a chat and we are so glad she said yes. We had to split this into two parts because there was just so much that we covered. In this part, we dig a bit into Sarah's history and how she feels about people believing in her work. Sarah is also a DM for a D&D group that she runs over Skype and I can only imagine how much fun it is to be in one of her sessions. If ever she needs a guest character I am sure that Nathan and Chris will be only too happy to join in. NPC Tea is available via Sarah's Etsy page and you can catch Sarah at Thought Bubble 2019 @ ComiXology 205. Stay tuned for part 2 of this interview and hear what is rolled and what we draw. Ros Beeson - Ep#13
It's our thirteenth episode and in October... oooh, spooky. We are honoured to have the wonderful improviser and sketch comedy performer/writer Ros Beeson join us. As much as this might sound like clickbait you would not believe what ends up being rolled by the dice when we get to it. Seriously we did NOT plan this. Ros is a great performer and we had no idea before we spoke to her that she had recently taken back up drawing. We dig into Ros' past a little and she explains how she got together with fellow university people to form the sketch based comedy group Up The Antics and now that she fronts the Bish Bash Bosh that you can see at the Bristol Improv Theatre. Ros spills the beans on how prop cigarettes work and teases us with talk about the upcoming show she is working on called Level Up in co-ordination with the Unscripted Players. You can catch this on the 15th & 16th November 2019 at the Bristol Improv Theatre, see their website for more details. Gwdihoo - Ep#12
EThis month we get spooky a little early with the talents of Gwdihoo (aka Goody Who). She is an awesome creative who has just become an art fair dad with the SUMMER SCREAM event. There is space in the world for spooky art fairs and so she set up the Ghoul Gang Collective along with her buddy Fruit & Bone. We get Goody to tell us what goes into having a tattoo apprenticeship and her influences. We go off on some pretty big tangents that take us through Christopher Robin as a horror movie, the works of Jan Svankmajer, Grace Neutral, Ryu Murakami and his book In The Miso Soup and one particular bit of work by the amazing Junji Ito. Rory Walker - Ep#11
Welcome to episode 11 where we feature a chat with fantastic artist Rory Walker. Rory is a fun and creative person and is currently back doing freelance work so if you know of anyone who can use his talents then lease pass on his details to them. In the episode, we explore Rory's dalliance with Dungeons and Dragons and his blatant disregard for units of measurement. Don't forget to go and take a look at our drawings and give us some feedback. Harry Jones - Ep#10 - Part 2
EThis is part two of our two-part chat with artist Harry Jones. Here is where we roll the dice and make something up. See what we make out of the Dinosaur & Robot genres. We dig a bit into why Harry finds taking photos is incredibly helpful for him to use as reference material. Chris struggles trying to draw a tar pit and gives some dinosaurs some weird legs and Nathan shows us how robot aliens actually kidnapped all the T-rex's. A huge thank you to Harry who was an awesome guest, we wish him well for all of his future projects and shall aim to keep an eye on what he produces. We are going back to releasing one episode a month again so our next episode will be Friday August 2nd 2019. Harry Jones - Ep#10 - Part 1
EThis is part one of our two-part chat with artist Harry Jones. Harry is a painter who enjoys making beautifully intricate pieces of art and has recently finished his third year at the University of West England (UWE). These pieces usually take quite a bit of time to finish and we chat about the process of creating such a piece and how recently the university lecturers have been trying to encourage him to be faster. You can't rush genius I say!. Part two is where we roll the dice and chat more. Thunderchair - Ep#9
We have the pleasure of chatting with Howard, Joe and Ferg who collectively call themselves Thunderchair for Episode 9. We begin by chatting about their new comic book launch event for Hyper Galactic Rockstar Champion: Royal Rumble. They have an interesting history of really long title names for their comic books. We talk about how they all met, what their influences are and there is a lot of silliness that happens. All of that is before we roll the cubes and somehow create a 70's style cop play starring a monster who is experiencing some sort of time shift. Rhiannon Kagoe - Ep#8
ERhiannon Kagoe joins us for episode 8 to talk about her comic books. She intends to try and release at least one comic a year. She talks about how drawing is some form of self-help therapy for her and how she finds it easier to come up with ideas when she is sad rather than happy. We also touch upon the tricky fact that people are currently choosing not to vaccinate their children. Consider this a warning that if you do find talks about this subject tricky then you might want to skip that bit. Remember to take a look on Facebook and Instagram for the images that were drawn for the dice roll. We can't thank Rhiannon enough for providing us with two awesome sketches. In the first part he takes us through what it's like to have a crazy dream come true and now be responsible for what we believe is a truly amazing daytime festival. Pilot Episode
Introducing the Rough Sketch Podcast Our pilot episode where we go over our intentions of the podcast and how we want it to work out and try our hand at rolling Rory's Story Cubes. In it, we mention that our drawings will be held under the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license. This episode was recorded over several sessions which explains the varying quality of audio. We will correct this in the future episodes, it also contains adult themes and some strong language.
