Ep 203203. Nancy Hogshead - Title IX and Social Change

“Title IX says no person shall be discriminated against on the basis of sex…as measured three different ways, one is equal opportunities to participate, two is equal scholarship dollars between men and women, and third is, they've got to get treated the same way.” Guest Bio: Life-long advocate for access and equality in athletics, internationally recognized legal expert on sports issues, scholar and author Nancy Hogshead has a commitment to equality, using sport as a vehicle for social change. As one of the foremost exponents for gender equity, she advocates for access and equality in sports participation. Legal issues include sexual harassment, sexual abuse and assault, employment, pregnancy, and legal enforcement under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Her book, co-authored with Andrew Zimbalist, Equal Play, Title IX and Social Change, has received acclaim since its release by Temple University Press. She was the lead author of Pregnant and Parenting Student-Athletes; Resources and Model Policies, published by the NCAA, and her book chapter, The Ethics of Title IX and Gender Equity for Coaches, appears in The Ethics of Coaching Sports; Moral, Social and Legal Issues, edited by Robert L. Simon. Hogshead has testified in Congress numerous times on the topic of gender equity in athletics, written numerous scholarly and lay articles, and has been a frequent guest on national news programs on the topic, including 60 Minutes, Fox News, CNN, ESPN, NPR, MSNBC and network morning news programming. She serves as an expert witness in Title IX cases and has written amicus briefs representing athletic organizations in precedent-setting litigation. From 2003 – 2012 she was the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Committee on the Rights of Women. She was elected to the editorial board of the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport. Sports Illustrated magazine listed her as one of the most influential people in the history of Title IX. Hogshead practiced law at the law firm of Holland & Knight, in both their litigation and public law departments. She was a tenured Professor of Law at the Florida Coastal School of Law, where she taught Torts, Sports Law and Gender Equity in Athletics courses for twelve years. Hogshead had a 30 year history with the Women’s Sports Foundation, starting as a college intern, becoming the third President from 1992-94, it’s the legal advisor from 2003-10, and serving as a consultant as the Senior Director of Advocacy until 2014. She earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and is an honors graduate of Duke University. Hogshead has received significant awards recognizing her commitment to athletics, including: an honorary doctorate from Springfield College, induction into the Academic All-America Hall of Fame and the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame for the National Association for Sports and Physical Education, and receipt of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators’ “Honor Award”. In 2011 she was presented with the National Organization for Women’s “Courage Award,” and was inducted into the National Consortium for Academics and Sports Hall of Fame. In 2012 she was awarded the “Title IX Advocate Award” from the Alliance of Women Coaches. In 2014 she was awarded the “Babe Didrikson Zaharias” Award. Hogshead capped eight years as a world class swimmer at the 1984 Olympics, where she won three Gold medals and one Silver medal. Through high school and college dual meets she was undefeated. Other major awards include the Nathan Mallison Award, given to Florida’s outstanding athlete, and the prestigious Kiphuth Award, given to the best all-around swimmer nationally. Nancy has been inducted into eleven halls of fame, including the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame. Stoddard's professional career commenced as a news assistant at the Washington, DC, bureau of ABC Radio, followed by stints as a news director and correspondent for radio stations in Keene, NH and Springfield, MA. He went on to work as a desk editor and regional executive for United Press International in Boston, before joining the staff of U.S. Senator Nancy Landon Kassebaum (R-KS) as Press Secretary in Washington, DC. Stoddard represented NCTA as a member of the industry Customer Care Committee (C5) for nearly 20 years, from its inception at NCTA through the stewardship of the Cable Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) and finally its permanent home at The Cable Center. He is a member of the Cable Television Pioneers as well as the Virginia Cable Hall of Fame. Stoddard has been recognized with major diversity awards from the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) and the Washington, DC / Baltimore Chapter of The WICT Network. Stoddard's career was capped by a 20-year run with the then-National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) as Senior Vice President for Communications & Public Affairs. After the association changed its name to NCTA - The Internet & Television Association, Stoddard became Senior Vice President for Industry & Association Affairs. He retired from NCTA in January 2022. “That's the special thing about kindness. It is so many different things. It can be generosity. It can be forgiveness. It can be trust. Compassion. It's all these things.” Patricia Makatsaria is a Civic Volunteer and Philanthropist who has dedicated herself to her community, promoting kindness and inclusion and striving to empower young leaders. After completing her MBA and Masters degree in Healthcare Administration, Patricia and her husband, Vladimir, moved abroad, embarking on an international life which spanned 23 years, living in Moscow, London, and Singapore. Patricia’s career and life journey has been an untraditional one due to the one constant in her life: change. In her early years, she worked in healthcare–managing an American Dental Clinic, and in private business–owning a distribution business for a luxury Swiss facial care line. Desiring more time to manage an expanding family and their international moves, Patricia moved to a career that gave her more flexibility: volunteering and philanthropy. In addition to a range of school and community volunteer activities, Patricia most notably worked with Operation Smile, an international charity which provides cleft lip and palate surgeries for children in third world countries. Her experiences on missions in India inspired her to commit to spreading awareness and developing young leaders for Op Smile through fundraising events, student leadership conferences, and the creation of new Operation Smile Clubs in schools. In their family’s most recent move, Patricia landed back in the United States. Challenged with the opportunity to reinvent herself, she decided to systematically build a new life around a value that had served her well throughout her life journey: kindness. “We're moving at a snail's pace compared to what's available out there. These kids are going to change the world if we let them. Or, they won't because we stopped them.” “I think that the biggest issue in science it's our inability to share our stories.” Serena has dedicated her life to advancing science and science education while working with the nation’s most promising youth. Dr. Serena McCalla was raised in New York City and fell in love with science as an elementary school student. She earned her bachelor’s degree, as a double major, in Biological Science and African American & African Studies from the State University of New York at Binghamton University with intentions to become an ER physician. However, she quickly realized she was more inspired by research than medicine. To satisfy her craving for deeper scientific understandings, Dr. Serena McCalla earned an MS degree in Hematology/Microbiology, a Ph.D. that explored the use of diagnostic tests to improve the comprehension of genetics, photosynthesis, and respiration in secondary and collegiate Courses. Dr. McCalla’s teaching experience began shortly after earning her bachelor’s degree. In the classroom, her appreciation for the sciences became more profound as the students exposed her to nuances of various scientific disciplines including material science, nanotechnology, computer science, computational biology, and physics. Using her growing knowledge of science fields outside of her degrees, Dr. McCalla founded the iResearch Corporation while working as the Science Research Coordinator for Jericho UFSD, Jericho, NY. The iResearch Corporation is the parent company of iResearch Foundation, iResearch Institute, iResearch Academy, and iResearch Science. These companies help Dr. McCalla share her research practices with educators and students from around the globe. The iResearch Foundation supports underrepresented and underprivileged students’ participation in the iResearch Institute and iResearch Academy. These programs promote science research method training and review of fundamental and advanced sciences by conducting laboratory experimentation and data science/bioinformatics data analysis and research to test novel hypotheses. Additionally, the iResearch Institute and iResearch Academy review the scientific method and research method practices through its international programs. The scientific training of these students encourages them to a) systematically address the use of the scientific method during the completion of projects, b) complete novel experimentation, and c) promote expertise in presenting and writing journal-worthy papers. Secondarily, Dr. McCalla is the Science Research Coordinator for Jericho Union Free School District (UFSD) and designed her curriculum to foster excellence in scientific research. The Jericho UFSD program has become one of the preeminent science research programs in the United States. Under Dr. McCalla’s tutelage, the school district is lauded annually for its exemplary performance in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Regeneron (formally Intel) Science Talent Search (STS) competitions producing over 80 scholars and 15 National finalists. The iResearch Corporation parallels the environment Dr. McCalla built at Jericho High School and UFSD, the culture of her classroom and lab brings forth copious avenues to help students excel in science, math, bioinformatics, data science, and engineering research. She enjoys that each day provides a new opportunity to encourage students to explore and impact the future of science and society.
