Brain Eno (almost) said that Miles Davis invented ambient music, you know. So it must be true..* Eno was referring to He Loved Him Madly, Miles' 1974 elegy for the late Duke Ellington. To quote Wikipedia, 'According to David Crosby's 2016 podcast interview with Marc Maron, Davis played Guinevere for Crosby. Crosby did not recognize any resemblance between Davis' version and his composition and Davis kicked him out of his house'. And by the way, John McLaughlin comes from Doncaster. Think on.

Scientist - aka Hopeton Overton Brown - is a recording engineer and producer. He can take a lovely reggae song and twist it into a whole other science fiction dub universe. His bass textures alone are a thing of wonder - many remixers just turn up the bass but our man Scientist sculpts the sound into something completely new. Here are some of his best dubs (IMHO), in collaboration with the rock-solid Roots Radics band, featuring Errol Flabba Holt on heavyweight bass and Style Scott (RIP) on drums. I recommend the album Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of Vampires as a gateway to his music. If it helps you to find them, the Greensleeves albums have been reissued by VP Records with the name of the producer, Junjo (Lawes) in place of Scientist's. Same music, but the original Greensleeves discs may have better sound quality. Bass rhythms are important to me, and the bassist whose records I've listened to most is the late Robbie Shakespeare, half of Sly & Robbie. He played on thousands of sessions in Jamaica, and if you've got any reggae discs, he'll likely be on half of them. Here's a few tunes in tribute, end-to-end. Miles Davis invented ambient music, you know. Brian Eno (almost) said that, so it must be true..* Eno was referring to He Loved Him Madly, Miles' 1974 elegy for the late Duke Ellington. Not ambient, but haunting, narcotic, ecstatic and very moving. (*any other contenders?) 1. Recollections - 18.57 - 1970 Miles - trumpet, Wayne Shorter - soprano saxophone, Bennie Maupin - bass clarinet, John McLaughlin - guitar, Joe Zawinul & Chick Corea - electric piano, Dave Holland - electric bass, Billy - Cobham - triangle, Jack DeJohnette - drums, Airto Moreira - cuica, percussion. Available on the 2000 CD issue of Big Fun. 2. In A Silent Way (edit) - 15.20 - February 18 1969 Miles – trumpet , Wayne Shorter – soprano saxophone, John McLaughlin – electric guitar, Chick Corea – electric piano, Herbie Hancock – electric piano, Joe Zawinul – electric piano, organ, Dave Holland – double bass, Tony Williams – drums A rework from the peerless album In A Silent Way, recorded in a one day session. This shorter version was issued on Panthalassa, the album Laswell put together when they let him loose on Miles' master tapes. I steered clear of the word remix there, because that would be sacrilege, and Laswell's versions actually work. It's still Miles. 3. To quote Wikipedia, 'According to David Crosby's 2016 podcast interview with Marc Maron, Davis played Guinevere for Crosby. Crosby did not recognize any resemblance between Davis' version and his composition and Davis kicked him out of his house'. And by the way, John McLaughlin comes from Doncaster. Think on.
