Joyful Militancy

Comrades, the times are hard. Although DSA is celebrating significant electoral victories and other important gains in our struggle for collective liberation, the road ahead for socialist organizers and people of conscience is long and difficult by any measure. On today’s episode of Revolutions Per Minute, we’re turning to one potential guide to approaching the coming months of struggle: joyful militancy. First outlined in a 2017 book by carla bergman and Nick Montgomery, and since taken up by activists and scholars with their own interpretations, joyful militancy is the effort of asking and understanding: “What makes radical spaces and movements feel transformative and creative, rather than dogmatic, rule-bound, or stifling?” Today’s episode features urban planner Sabrina Bazile and theater artist Haleh Roshan, both DSA members and organizers, on how they implement the theory and practice of joyful militancy into their work.
