From Spotlight to Self-Discovery: Laura Sohn returns!
EWhat happens when you step away from the path everyone expects you to follow? Actress Laura Sohn returns to Reppin for a powerful conversation about redefining success, owning your identity, and finding belonging on your own terms. Laura broke out globally on the hit NBC drama The Blacklist, and has appeared across television in NCIS and God Friended Me. Her work spans network television and the New York stage—always bringing depth, nuance, and authenticity to the stories she tells. But this conversation goes beyond the highlight reel. Laura opens up about the pressure so many of us feel—from family, culture, and society—to chase a very specific definition of success. In her twenties, she made the bold decision to step back from a hit show and ask a bigger question: What actually matters? What followed was a period of reflection, humility, and growth. It’s an honest conversation about curiosity, culture, family, and the courage it takes to stop proving yourself—and start owning who you are. Laura is also currently starring in the New York play JESA at The Public Theater. JESA follows four Korean American sisters who reunite to perform their father’s ancestral ritual honoring the dead. What begins as a ceremony quickly erupts into sibling clashes, humor, and the messy truth about what holds people together. If you’ve ever: questioned your path felt caught between cultures or wondered where you truly belong this conversation will resonate. 🎭 See Laura live in JESA!! https://publictheater.org/productions/season/2526/jesa/ 🎧 Listen to Reppin:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reppin/id1480913421 🌐 More episodes:https://reppin.tv Say hi! Sonia Manzano: The Latina Legend Who OWNED Sesame Street
EThe Maria From Sesame Street Who BROKE TV’s Mold & Changed EVERYTHING for Latino Kids You think representation in media is new? Nah. This episode hits DIFFERENT. We’re talking to the OG — the legendary talent who defined Maria on Sesame Street for 40+ years. She wasn’t just a character. She was a MOVEMENT. Sonia Manzano isn’t just “Maria” — she’s a trailblazer, an Emmy-winning writer, and a cultural icon who paved the way for Latino voices on TV. Growing up in the Bronx, Sonia broke barriers as one of the first Latina actresses on national television. Beyond acting, she shaped stories behind the scenes, winning multiple Emmys as a Sesame Street writer and creator of Alma’s Way, a groundbreaking animated series empowering Latino kids to embrace their identity and think critically. Sonia’s work has been a beacon of representation, education, and cultural pride for generations. Back in the 50s and 60s, there was ZERO space for people of color on TV. ZERO. She grew up in the Bronx, a young Latina with ZERO examples on screen to look up to — until she became one. This isn’t just nostalgia. This is the foundation of how Latino kids started seeing themselves on TV. Period. We get into: How she owned her identity while holding down one of the most beloved kids’ shows EVER Breaking generational trauma and building cultural pride through media Why representation isn’t just nice to have — it’s ESSENTIAL for the future Here’s the deal — we all face challenges in breaking through the noise, the stereotypes, and the limitations people try to put on us. Whether it’s your culture, your background, or your dreams, this episode is a reminder that YOU have the power to create your own space. To tell your own story. To be the voice that others desperately need. If she could do it, so can you. Ready to stop waiting for someone else to represent you? Ready to break barriers and build your legacy? The Heiress Who Said ‘Tax Me More!'
EWhat if the person with everything decided the system was broken—and then put her money where her mouth is? That’s not a headline. That’s Marlene Engelhorn’s real life. In this episode of Reppin, Marlene—yes, a multi-millionaire heiress from Vienna—breaks down why growing up rich wasn’t the dream everyone assumes… and how waking up to her privilege pushed her to become one of the most outspoken voices for wealth redistribution, tax reform, and economic justice. This isn’t performative philanthropy. It’s not guilt. It’s ACTION. REAL action. She literally gave away her inheritance. She co-founded Tax Me Now. She’s building a citizens' assembly to decide how to redistribute her wealth—democratically. If you’re someone who cares about social justice, economic inequality, wealth privilege, or what real accountability looks like, this episode is basically a masterclass. In this powerful, deeply personal, and transformative episode of Reppin, I sit down with actor, producer, and changemaker Osric Chau—you know him from Supernatural, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, and most recently, the history-making “Worth the Wait” on Tubi. But this conversation is different. For the first time ever, I share something I’ve never said out loud—how I struggled with my own identity, how I once wanted a nose job to “look more white,” and how hearing Osric's story helped me finally understand the depth of what representation really means—for all of us. 💥 WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS EPISODE: 🎯 The Real Cost of Representation: Why not seeing yourself reflected in media isn’t just disappointing—it’s damaging. Osric and I unpack how these absences shaped our self-worth and cultural understanding. 🎯 The Fearless Mindset: How Osric made the bold decision to take a one-way flight to the Philippines—no budget, no backup plan, just a script and relentless faith. (Spoiler: it changed his life—and career.) 🎯 Lessons on Resilience, Identity & Grit: From navigating Hollywood as “one of the very few Asian guys” to becoming someone others now look up to, Osric opens up about leadership, legacy, and trusting his future self—even when the odds are stacked. 🎯 Soft Power, Real Impact: Representation isn’t just about being seen. It’s about shaping perception, shifting culture, and reclaiming the narrative. Osric breaks down how normalizing our stories rewires what the world thinks is beautiful, capable, and powerful. 🎯 Exclusive Insight Into “Worth The Wait”: Osric dishes on his new groundbreaking rom-dram anthology on Tubi—the platform’s first-ever original Asian-American film with an all-star cast (Ross Butler, Lana Condor, Andrew Koji). Far East Movement & the rise of The Rose
EReppin: James Roh on The Rose Documentary, Far East Movement’s Historic Breakthrough & The Rose’s Rise What does it take to break barriers, top the charts, and still stay rooted in community? In this episode of Reppin, I sit down with James Roh — artist, manager, and founder — to unpack the making of the The Rose Documentary and the remarkable rise of The Rose, a band that has built a fiercely loyal global fanbase through raw honesty, independence, and a commitment to authenticity. We trace the spark that led to the film — from a studio moment inspired by Michelle Yeoh to a key connection with Janet Yang — and why their story resonated so strongly when I saw it premiere at Tribeca Festival. The documentary captures a band navigating military service, label transitions, and creative rebirth while holding tight to friendship and mental health. James also dives deep into Far East Movement’s groundbreaking legacy as the first Asian American group to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Like a G6. We talk about their decade-long grind, global touring, major collaborations, and the cultural impact of breaking into a space where Asian American artists were rarely seen — along with the backlash and pressure that came with that visibility. Their later album Identity marked a creative turning point, reconnecting the group to culture and community across Asia. You’ll hear how James channels those hard-earned lessons into active community building — using his experience to help boost The Rose and create sustainable paths for other artists. Through Transparent Arts, and collaborations with Wong Fu Productions and Gold House, he’s focused on building an ecosystem where Asian and Asian American creatives can thrive long term — and why that mission fuels everything he does. This episode is about chart-topping milestones, creative resilience, and the power of lifting others as you rise. If you care about music, identity, and building something bigger than yourself, this conversation is for you. From the NYC Streets and 911: My Personal Reflections
EThe events of 911 changed everyone. It changed everything about how we see each other, how we carry pain, and how we find hope. I recorded this episode just a few days after this past 9/11 anniversary, and it’s not my usual format. I’m really reflective here—sharing something deeply personal and raw. This will not be one of the usual epsiodes. E🎙️ TRIBECA EXCLUSIVE — “We Are Pat” w/ Rowan Haber | SNL, Identity & Reclaiming the Narrative What do you do when the only version of you the world sees… is a joke? In this Tribeca Film Festival special episode of Reppin, filmmaker Rowan Haber sits down to talk about their deeply personal and powerfully necessary documentary, We Are Pat — a film that takes one of SNL’s most controversial characters and reclaims it with heart, depth, and truth. For some, Pat was just a sketch. But for others — especially those who never fit neatly into labels — Pat was a punchline with consequences. A symbol of how media can distort, erase, and wound. 🎬 We Are Pat doesn’t just revisit the character. It reclaims them. It turns pain into power and asks a question every one of us must face: “What happens when the world defines you before you ever get the chance?” This isn’t just an LGBTQIA+ conversation. It’s a HUMAN conversation. It’s about identity — who we are, how we’re seen, and what it takes to rewrite the stories that misrepresent us. We’ve all been misunderstood. We’ve all been put in a box we didn’t ask for. This episode is for anyone who's ever had to fight to be seen, heard, and valued for who they really are. The emotional weight of media representation — and misrepresentation Why satire isn’t always harmless Rowan’s journey of confronting shame, claiming identity, and creating art that heals How you can take back your narrative — no matter your background About Reppin’ Reppin’ is the podcast that amplifies real stories at the intersection of identity, culture, and authenticity. Reclaiming Power: Uttera Singh on Sexual Shame, Culture & Healing | Tribeca Film Festival Interview
E🔥 This isn’t just a film. This is a conversation we ALL need to have. I'm coming to you straight from the Tribeca Film Festival—one of the most prestigious, culture-shifting film events in the world. Founded by Robert De Niro after 9/11 to revive NYC’s creative spirit, Tribeca is where bold voices, visionary filmmakers, and fearless stories get the global spotlight. 🎥 In this powerful and personal interview, I sit down with writer/director Uttera Singh to talk about her breakout film Pinch—a raw, emotional story of a young woman reclaiming her power after sexual assault. But let’s be real: this isn’t just about assault. It’s about shame. Identity. Healing. Culture. Family. And what it really takes to own your story when the world tells you to stay small. Uttera, a fierce, talented, young woman of color, opens up about her feminist upbringing, the pressure to stay silent, and the layered dynamics of Indian culture versus universal trauma. She’s rewriting what it means to be a “strong female lead”—showing us flawed, real, deeply human women who still get to rise. 💬 Whether you’ve lived it, witnessed it, or want to understand it better—this conversation will move you. Because this story isn’t just hers—it’s all of ours. 👊 So let’s talk about it. 🎤 What does reclaiming power mean to you? 💬 Drop your thoughts in the comments—your voice matters. Someone needs to hear what you have to say. 📲 Share this with a friend. Let’s break the silence together. PINCH the film's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pinchthemovie/ 🛎️ New here? 911 Anniversary: Rais Bhuiyan -Pain and Purpose
EDisclaimer: This conversation includes graphic content, violence, and other mature themes that some may find triggering or disturbing. Listener discretion is advised. On September 11, 2001, life as we knew it changed forever. From the devastating attacks to the hijacked planes to the Pentagon to the first responders-- many lives were lost, and families were destroyed. These events were monumental moments in history, but they also made seemingly small, daily moments that most take for granted an impossibility for some. Some children would never know what it's like to feel their mom or dad's hands in theirs, and some would never even meet their parent. Husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, daughters, and sons never returned to the dinner table or had the chance to pick up the phone to hear the latest news from their family. There were so many victims from all walks of life and categories. One community not often thought of as victims of 9/11 is the Muslim community. After 9/11, rampant fear and anger raced through the US, leading to an increase in hate crimes against the Muslim community. In today's conversation, Rais Bhiyuan, an immigrant from Bangladesh, shares his story. He grew up watching classic Western television shows portraying a wholesome, positive image of the American Cowboy. These stories depicted cowboys standing up for the ideals that this country represents, inspiring the rest of the world to follow suit. Rais came to America to experience this for himself. However, in the days following 9/11, a man with a mission to harm anyone from the Muslim community walked in and ultimately shot Rais in the face. Thankfully and miraculously, my guest survived. As if the trauma of being shot wasn't enough, his recovery was arduous, and figuring out how to pay for urgently needed medical treatments without insurance became another traumatic nightmare that added to his ordeal. What's remarkable is not only Rais' survival but also how he chose to respond to his shooter and how he chose to move forward despite this life-changing pain. This is a powerful story of survival, goodness, unbelievable resilience, empathy, and love for one's country. Listen in as Rais shares details of what happened that awful day, how he managed to survive, what he's learned, and you'll be absolutely amazed at what he's doing now. We shall never forget 9/11 and those we lost. Yes, it was a devastating day with unimaginable loss and pain, and yes there was palpable fear and hate, but there was also a beautiful display of unity, love, bravery, and humanity that emerged in the aftermath of 9/11. We all exemplified the very principles that America represents—and that is something we should never forget. Because during the darkest days in US history, we were at our absolute best. EHave you ever had a great idea, wanted to try something new or had something you believed in-but the world said you couldn’t do it or it won’t work? Ever struggled with uncertainty or self doubt?? Well so did 3x Emmy winning talent Crystal Chappell. Crystal is a powerhouse actress you’ve seen on Days Of Our Lives. She was Dr. Carly Manning - 1 part of the super couple Bo and Carly. She was also on Guiding Light as Olivia Spencer, trailblazing as one of daytimes first lesbian characters with a ground breaking storyline featuring a same sex love story with Jessica Leccia’s character Natalia Rivera —also lovingly nicknamed Otalia. At a time when web series and streaming weren’t terms anyone knew about or understood. Crystal wanted to bring a whole Daytime series onto the web. Also, creating a series from scratch and taking it all the way to fruition was not something Crystal had done before. Crystal was faced doubters and some who would even try and take her down. On top of that she had a long list of challenges —everything from learning the legal procedures of putting a show together, technical know how to the endless challenges and rules of production--all the while she was a full time actress. These are staggering mountains to climb but she believed in her concept so much she took it on. What became of her vision was a digital series called Venice, in which she created, wrote, produced and end up taking multiple awards like the prestigious Emmy. Today, our conversation takes us beyond the daytime arena, and you'll hear some of the herculean challenges that Crystal faced. She will share how she created new pathways not only for herself but for an entire genre.
