On Today’s episode of Big Trouble in Little Vagina, we’re going to have some real fun! We’re taking a break from working on ourselves to look at the world around us and this week we’re looking at the tried and true art form Burlesque! And no, I’m not talking about the movie with Christina Aguilara in it, we’re talking the very popular form of entertainment, which began in the 1840s.
Burlesque was used by working class performers as a way to mock the upper classes, their traditions, social habits, culture and fashion and many of the performances were spoofs of operas, Shakespeare and other classic literature and plays. The performances relied on mockery and played to the audience's desire for laughter and lust.
